This is great information and should be used for every car purchase. In the northeast like me rust should be the first thing to look for. I’m truck shopping. I drove a 2017 Silverado Z71 today. $33k. The rear fenders/ wheel wells were already chipped and rusting. 5 years it would be falling apart. Just in time to have it paid off. Buy from Florida Texas California or Washington if you can.
You can pump the brakes with the key off until you feel that there’s no pressure anymore, and then turn the ignition on, but with the engine off. You will hear the pump running for a couple cycles until the pressure is back.
Awesome video, really great tips on what to look for. One more thing on The 100 series that tends to fail sooner than previous generations are the exhaust manifolds. I have seen the exhaust manifold runners separate from the mounting plate that sits against the cylinder head on a few of them. Keep up the great work!
Great video -- I'm not saying you shouldn't look at other areas of the undercarriage for rust, but the main thing is the frame. Including the cross members. Including the one that is directly in front of the spare tire, which can be hard to see unless you drop the spare. Also, the brackets that hold the torsion bars. I hate to say it but other parts can be replaced (even the driveshaft and certainly exhaust). I'm not an expert or a body guy but my thoughts on rust are: surface/shallow = all are going to have this. Flaky = may be okay but start looking closer. Larger flakes and chunks = tap and knock on them, and if the metal feels week/sounds dull, the rust may go all the way through.
ABS accumulator pump failure is very very common on these and a very expensive fix even if you do the work yourself. These are well-known to have their frames rust apart. They are also well known to go over 400,000 miles with no mechanical failures other than the ABS so it's a trade off. They are truly outstanding vehicles otherwise
Alternator went bad the first week I had it. Brake booster pump(motor) in 2 months. I got it for a good price, so I expected like 2000 in repairs to get it in gooood condition. The engine's strong and runs clean. 274K miles
@@Nackdad I was looking at 3.5K to start negotiating at, so I paid around 3 at the end. Again though, I will end up paying at least 1500 if I want it top-notch, as it alllows. For example check out how much it is to replace the Brake Booster assembly for this car vs. one which has vacuum-based brake booster. Know what you're buying. Looking back, I would pay 5K for a v good one.
You inspired me to get a lexus. I recent brought a 02 Lexus Lx470 with only 140k. There are a few problems I need to get second opinion on the cause. 1. The car makes a cluck sound as it decelerates. It up shifts very smooth. Trans fluid looks good (darkred). What do you think the cause is? 2. This might be related to issue 1, when shifting between R to D there is a massive cluck or a kick. Your input on what the issues maybe will he greatly appreciated.
Glad to hear it! 140K is like a brand new rig. Clunk noise sounds like it could be slop in the shafts. I would grease all U joints and slip yokes and change the trans fluid. mine had a clunk when decelerating as well but went away after greasing shafts a few times. Also had a clunk when shifting into D from R but changing trans fluid really got rid of that as well. I have videos on both but I'm sure you can find lots of detail on ih8mud.com Great site for anything related to these rigs. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
@@BeginnersLuckGarage Many thanks for your time in responding to my questions. It was extremely helpful. Great fun in keeping these treasure car running.
Harvey Peterson you can try Ebay and amazon. I got mine at my local lexus dealer. It should be around $35 At least that's what it was a year ago. Part number is 08886-01805
Mine from CLE, Ohio, will go because of rust before anything else. Depends how long do you expect an old car like LX to last. Depends a lot on the region where you drive it.
I watched 34 seconds. I thought I was going to hear about the not obvious things to look for, it started with, make sure the windows go up and down. Fail.

Good video 👍
6:19 0512 doesnt mean May 2012. 05 is the 5th week of 2012. :)

What head unit do you have ? How much and price to install? Love the video
🎬100 series vs 200 series compared, Which to buy?: @eHK8
Rust under rear hatch, rust spot at the hatch handle
How many miles when you bought it ?and how many miles at the time of this vehicle ?
Was always told the Bridgestone dueler h/l alenza + were the quietest
Good buy! Very nice rig. I love those.

try showing a short video on how you engage 4WD for off road use...thanks.
The LX is AWD...
Tim Adamany the question was for 4wd while off roading, not if the vehicle has AWD
@@imwuz It doesn't have 4 Wheel Drive, that's my point. Are you referring to engaging the "4 Low"? Because that's different.

Got it.
Thank you for the information..
There is nothing to look for it's the best vehicle ever made

You forgot to mention frame rust...

0512 on the tyre means 5th week of 2012. But still, good info otherwise.
Need you to meet me at the dealership tomorrow!
Do these cars ever have transmission problems?
2001 year had some issues but other than that...no
I am glad to hear that! So if someone buys an LX and does their maintenance, they can drive it for at least half a million miles?
@@Nikolasto77 that's a safe bet. I have 240K miles on mine with original transmission and original engine. Still runs smooth
Do you use synthetic engine oil?
Yes, I use Mobil 1
