    Appreciate that this is still getting views years later :D
    You can read the deep details in the Engine Labs article here www.enginelabs.com/engine-tech/engine/olds-4-quadrajet-carbs-madness-hot-rodding-finest/
    As for the many, many comments on "too much carb" " too slow" etc. you missed the point of the whole project.
    Highlights for the serious technical enthusiasts are:
    -Had more fuel than it could handle, only uses what one pulse on on half of carb every cycle will consume.
    -Secondary air doors are as tight as they can be without breaking springs.. pulse was extremely strong on custom roller cam. Started to tie pairs together across carbs to dampen them against violent open/close but never got to test.
    -375cfm per cylinder is what every dual plane intake manifold allows each cylinder pulse to consume, so it is not over carbureted, again, missed the point. Same CFM per cylinder, and VERY different pulse sharing though, causing "significant" problems :D
    - Reversion from cam profile is big issue, pulse sooo strong that it needed a different cam, lobe separation. No big V8 IR cam experts alive to talk to that I have found. Let me know if you know of one :D
    -Air cleaners soaked with fuel vapor from reversion were fire hazard, stacks better to keep shear from road wind affecting fuel.
    -Finally, raced the car with duals on a tunnel ram for a few years after to learn more on the Qjets modifications needed for future versions.
    -A 6-71 under them would definitely help, but how would I see to drive :D
    -Still shelved in 2022, it stares at me when I walk thru the shop, but hopes to revamp in coming years in some form.
    Thanks for the positive comments and enthusiasm, it was a fun project :)

  • @Dr_Xyzt
    @Dr_Xyzt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is so unusual! So, it looks like the carbs are seeing such forceful pulses, that the secondaries start to flutter. The wind going over the tops of the carbs seems to aggravate that situation too. Where a normal manifold uses the plenum to dampen this event, these carbs are exposed to it directly.
    -- It seems like you'd need an X-pipe exhaust to force a more consistent venturi effect, and then somehow dampen the secondary flaps. Maybe a clutch master cylinder with the return spring pulled out can help this setup work. Basically the master cylinder would have to be set up to "bench bleed" itself all the time, and the vacuum activation is what's pushing it.
    -- I'm wondering if the ports under the primaries and secondaries are tapered in an odd way. If the air demand is really high and the port is directly under the secondary, then the signal will completely bypass the primary, and aggravate the pulsating effect.
    -- We can make this work. If an air box is installed over the carbs as high as the filter cleaner hole is round, it would work. We want the incoming air to form an eddy current with the fuel standoff. We can do this at a reasonable price with some diamond plate and some patience.

  • @brianbrundage3116

    Great video for Quadraheads but, as you can see the engine runs great on 8 barrels. Although, when the 8 large barrels barely open the engine just floods and bogs down. Obviously, to much carb or carbs, stick with two Quadrajets and it should run great and not bog down. There is such a thing as too much carb or in this case to many carbs, nice to see it’ll work though if you don’t ever expect to use full throttle.....

  • @emmettwhisenhunt8416
    @emmettwhisenhunt8416 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quadrajets use vibration to atomize gas and make a cloud of vapor. They need to have air cleaners to trap the atomized gas. They also need high volume fuel pumps or they boil over or run dry at 90mph full throttle. But get amazing gas mileage.

    Your set up is Cool as Hell. If this was a 1x4 or a 2x4 Quadrajet application I'd say the OEM sized fuel lines going to the Carbs are to small to get the volume you need at 7 to 8 psi even with a 0.152 Seat I.D. You should be running # 8 or 3/8 Pipe thru a large I.D. Regulator and right up to the Carbs to prevent starvation. But with a 4x4 Quadrajet set up maybe Your float levels say a max. of approximate 9/32" to 1/4" from the top of the bowl to prevent flooding on de-acceleration will get enough fuel to the motor without leaning or a horsepower loss. But I don't know if you are running a 400, 455, what power level or 1/4 time You are trying to achieve. I used to Port and Blueprint Quadrajets for all kinds of Racing and I know with the jetting right that single fuel bowl will empty ready fast over 450 HP if you don't have enough pressure and supply right at the needle and seat. My Brother and I built a 66' and 67' 442 Restomod Clones with single Quadrajets on Oldsmobile Small Blocks in the 80's. Yours is Really inspiring. Thanks for the videos.

I am impressed how well it runs tho. I made an adapter once to put a Qjet on a chrysler 2.2 in a ol bomber dakota cus the oem electronic carb was smoked, everyone joked calling it a funnel ram. It wouldnt pull the air valve open (when set right to avoid bog reasons) so it was 90% on primaries and it ran beautifull!, Then manual trans puked in 2 days. oh well fun experiment. Sweet job on ur quad quad!

    Could you change the dashpot setup on the air doors to a more solid connection, like on a Holley 4160 carb? I think the slots in the linkage assembly is allowing the violent flapping of the air doors. Maybe even build an adjustable dashpot like the Holley? This is all speculation here, but I'm thinking that a solid connection would give you much more control over smoothing the action of the opening and closing. It has to be hard to get this to work right with the pulsation issues of an I.R. intake.
    I can't tell from my phone screen, do you still have the hangers and rods functioning on the air doors?
    I love playing with Quadrajet carbs. I once completely removed the secondary air doors, rods, and hangers from the carb on my stout 468 Olds engine. I couldn't get enough pump shot to overcome a lean bog if I stabbed it from a dead idle but MAN, if I laid right into it at anything above 2500 RPMs, the car would leave 100' of rubber from a roll, and pulled harder than it ever did.
    People wouldn't believe me that this would work, until I took them for a ride in the car. I tried the same thing on a milder 350 Olds, and it would bog badly unless the RPMs were up there a ways before you got into the secondaries. I wish I was able to get enough pump shot with this mod, the performance of the carb was incredible, but the low RPM bog at full throttle was annoying. I did drive the car for quite a while like this, and then ended up with a 1050 Dominator on it eventually.

    Dog ass slow - that thing is way over carbureted ! The air speed in the secondaries is so slow that the wind blowing over the air horns pulls the gasoline right onto the windshield! Car would be faster with a toilet filled with gasoline.
