Merab tweaked his game by being relatively restrained & elusive and their prepped strategy became useless. They were too complacent &/or lazy they didn't have a Plan B & C prepped. They also looked inexperienced because they had no remedy or adjustments to adapt on the fly.
Merab went 6/15 take down attempts. Merab was taking down Cejudo … an Olympic gold medal wrestler but Sean is going to stop all his takedowns with one training camp ? Mmmmk . The 9 knee shots merab threw in round 1 did more damage and had a greater impact on the whole fight than anything O’Malley threw. This is because O’Malley had the hip injury, and these knees 100% hurt that injured hip and handicapped him the rest of the fight. And for that reason Merab wins round 1.

Indeed. O'Malley was lost. His corner advice needed to be cold, hard, strategic advice... this is what Merab is doing, what he is waiting for, you have to retime what you are doing to get him unsure. You need to start hitting him with combos, he's not intimidated (you know, the opposite of 'snipe", which wasn't working), and you need to work on breaking him down, the KO isn't presenting, he's moving too well, etc etc. You know, the shit they should be able to deduce/read from watching the fight, their role in being cageside. Timbo just wants to insert himself into the fight by yelling at the opponent, rather than watching the fight analytically and why his guy is losing and the other guy is gaining momentum, and consolidating what a loving fan/coach he is with all the baby talk. Of course, a better coach would have made sure his conditioning was heavily focused on constantly having to get up from TDs. The biggest own that Squelch admitted was not expecting the double legs and didn't know what to say. That's been lost in the noise. People actually praising him for the growth it shows to admit that "It's almost over" came out "all wrong". Bad enough to have ruled them out as a possibility, even worse that cageside, he couldn't work out what would be the best way for Sean to either defend them or deal with it once he's on his back. My opinion is that someone advised Sean that to be the troll - Heel, that Can’t lose a fight. Just like he did after the first Cheeto fight. BC the UFC is going to try and push him right back in to the title picture regardless. Sean’s fans are all casual viewers and will believe whatever he says. Again my opinion but I think UFC said, “ Stop with the humble BS and saying you’re going to take a year off, and be that person that the loyalist mma fans love to hate.” Love your content brother and really like your approach!
This isnt surprising. Toss in Conor's coach Kavanaugh, as well. There are some athletes who can get a mediocre or terrible coaching team to a championship, but they show how awful they are when the athlete is struggling at high levels of the sport. Javier Mendez is another. Javier shouting, "Fathers plan" or "Give me Cain," is just cringe worthy.
I really think that if O'malley can manage to release himself from the surrounding yes men, that he could easily propel himself much higher than where he is now. I truly believe that O'malley is a good kid, he seems pretty well intentioned outside of the cage, however, i can't help but think that maybe his surroundings aren't allowing him to take this as seriously as he should. I'm not even saying necessarily that Tim is a totally horrible coach, it could just be that O'malley has outgrown Tim. Idk O’Malley was telling us his game plan for months now.. it was to just dick around the whole fight until he finds that 1 magical shot.. that’s exactly what happend. Except merab made sure to do the same thing only he never fed him his chin. In the end Sean was the one who was tired and it showed. Boring as hell but exactly what we knew would happen. When both fighters aren’t landing.. the one who is pushing a harder pace and controlling the octagon better.. gets the edge

I got just the coach for Sean O’Malley Trevor Wittman, and if Rose didn’t have Pat Barry in her ear between round she would still be Champ. I understand she loves him he probably loves her, but love has no place in a fight corner only objective business. If I were in the octagon and things weren’t going well I’d want plausible answers as to what I could do. I would expect my coach to know my abilities and tell me some thing I can do or tell me what I’m not seeing my opponent do that could exploit.
The worst corner advice in the UFC that I remember is listening to Tony Ferguson's team tell him to "throw sand" while Justin Gaethje is putting an career altering beating on him.
Joey, I just watched MMA Guru’s video, and he makes a really solid point. First off, I do like your content. But After rewatching the fight frame by frame, I honestly think Sean won. Control time doesn’t equal winning. The UFC judges fights based on damage, NOT control. And let’s not forget that Merab was also grabbing O’Malley’s gloves - but I’m guessing you don’t care about that! Rewatch the fight instead of just blatantly saying he lost. Damage-based scoring is the key here, and following the masses without breaking it down yourself isn’t the way.

Timbo just wants to insert himself into the fight by yelling at the opponent, rather than watching the fight analytically and why his guy is losing and the other guy is gaining momentum, and consolidating what a loving fan/coach he is with all the baby talk.
Of course, a better coach would have made sure his conditioning was heavily focused on constantly having to get up from TDs.
The biggest own that Squelch admitted was not expecting the double legs and didn't know what to say. That's been lost in the noise. People actually praising him for the growth it shows to admit that "It's almost over" came out "all wrong". Bad enough to have ruled them out as a possibility, even worse that cageside, he couldn't work out what would be the best way for Sean to either defend them or deal with it once he's on his back.
That his kicks suck and can be read a mile away... that's on both of them. Snipe, snipe... you can see that they have believed their own hype and a whole career could be built on "the snipe". Turns out it only works if the other guy stands there and lets him or charges in because he thought it was time to go.

Alternative perspective: The coach keeps saying "you are the champion" because he himself has no fckin idea how someone with O'Malley's skillset is champion of UFC BW division in 2024. Probably believes in O'Malley's aura, plot armor, inner strength, Dana White privilege etc... and that's it. He just tries to trigger the anime plot twist, as multiple times before. Without anime plot twist he has no idea what any of them are doing there that night, in the UFC PPV main event, inside The Sphere.

Before the fight, I was saying Sean's main hope was the knee up the middle. And I kinda thought he'd hurt him and finish him eventually. I would've assumed Welch had a better gameplan than to resort to something a casual fan like me could think up.

My opinion is that someone advised Sean that to be the troll - Heel, that Can’t lose a fight. Just like he did after the first Cheeto fight. BC the UFC is going to try and push him right back in to the title picture regardless. Sean’s fans are all casual viewers and will believe whatever he says. Again my opinion but I think UFC said, “ Stop with the humble BS and saying you’re going to take a year off, and be that person that the loyalist mma fans love to hate.” Love your content brother and really like your approach!

This isnt surprising. Toss in Conor's coach Kavanaugh, as well. There are some athletes who can get a mediocre or terrible coaching team to a championship, but they show how awful they are when the athlete is struggling at high levels of the sport. Javier Mendez is another. Javier shouting, "Fathers plan" or "Give me Cain," is just cringe worthy.

I really think that if O'malley can manage to release himself from the surrounding yes men, that he could easily propel himself much higher than where he is now. I truly believe that O'malley is a good kid, he seems pretty well intentioned outside of the cage, however, i can't help but think that maybe his surroundings aren't allowing him to take this as seriously as he should. I'm not even saying necessarily that Tim is a totally horrible coach, it could just be that O'malley has outgrown Tim. Another thing that i do think is affecting O'malley, man listen, as the champ, you CANNOT party and mess about. This sport is a game of millimeters, and every single one counts. I would LOVE to see O'malley get a new team, readjust, and become the star that we all know he is capable of being. Too many distractions IMO. One more thing, if he's rewatching this without realizing he got dominated and he underperformed, his mentality needs a fix as well. Other than that, and deep down, i think Sean is a good dude, i think he's hungry, i just don't know if he's hungry enough to ditch his surrounding people, but i pray he has the strength.

Idk O’Malley was telling us his game plan for months now.. it was to just dick around the whole fight until he finds that 1 magical shot.. that’s exactly what happend. Except merab made sure to do the same thing only he never fed him his chin. In the end Sean was the one who was tired and it showed. Boring as hell but exactly what we knew would happen. When both fighters aren’t landing.. the one who is pushing a harder pace and controlling the octagon better.. gets the edge

It shows what kind of man you are how you handle a loss. Ran from the post fight press, didn’t demand immediate rematch. Conor faced the cameras immediately and demanded a rematch against Nate, same weight, 3 months later and won.

I got just the coach for Sean O’Malley Trevor Wittman, and if Rose didn’t have Pat Barry in her ear between round she would still be Champ. I understand she loves him he probably loves her, but love has no place in a fight corner only objective business. If I were in the octagon and things weren’t going well I’d want plausible answers as to what I could do. I would expect my coach to know my abilities and tell me some thing I can do or tell me what I’m not seeing my opponent do that could exploit.

Joey, I just watched MMA Guru’s video, and he makes a really solid point. First off, I do like your content. But After rewatching the fight frame by frame, I honestly think Sean won. Control time doesn’t equal winning. The UFC judges fights based on damage, NOT control. And let’s not forget that Merab was also grabbing O’Malley’s gloves - but I’m guessing you don’t care about that! Rewatch the fight instead of just blatantly saying he lost. Damage-based scoring is the key here, and following the masses without breaking it down yourself isn’t the way.
