      That's actually the joke. It's so rediculous that they constantly ridicule him, especially because he often presents brilliant and well thought out/ considerate ideas only to be immediately shot down because he mispronounced one word. One episode he literally presented a machine that produced infinite clean electricity and they all dismissed it immediately before he even finished his thought. It's all part of an elaborate long running joke

      Not to mention there wasn't anything that goofy, annoying or "wrong" in Jerry for him to be that character. It was very forgettable and unneccessary honestly. I don't even really care that there is this bully trope but it was just done bad in Parks. I wouldn't even remember Jerry's existence if I talked with someone about Parks, that's how funny it was.

    Weird thing about these kinds of jokes being so prevalent in kids' shows is that I always hated the mean-spirited bullying in those shows, mainly because I identified with characters like Josh who were a little weird and got bullied. "contrapoints said that, but she's cancelled now" lmao
    Been really enjoying these, Leo, but this is the first one I think I'll be revisiting to mull over. I've been thinking a lot about not just the easy target, but how we assign roles to people in a group that even if they aren't obviously negative can still limit their participation or the perspectives they can have within a group. In my college class, for example, one of my classmates is seen as the person who will sort out any problems through direct confrontation. It's not a negative thing, they've helped a lot of people by being willing to stand up and say something when there's an issue. Typically there a lot of good natured joking about how if something goes wrong we'll send her to crack some skulls or whatever. The problem is by typing her as the 'tough' one of the group, that when she discusses something with compassion, it tends to result in the jokes about cracking skulls or starting a riot. Typing people is an issue because it limits our ability to see them as a full person which limits their freedom to act.
    I keep thinking about the mecha anime "The Big O" which is an exploration of identity and who we are beyond who we are perceived to be. There's a line where the main character says "who am I? As long as you call me by my name, that is who I am." As long as we see people in our friend groups as easy targets, then that's who they are. It sucks, and we should probably be better to our friends.

    This an interesting topic that is often overlooked. I think the trope is okay depending on where it is happening and the context of the group. It's okay to play pranks (within reason) or joke about friends and family, but you would never act that way with colleagues.
    For example, Britta, although considered "the worst", has many positive qualities that still make her likable. This works within the Community gang because Britta is not disliked among the others: Pierce is. In episodes like Biology 101 or Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Pierce knows he is "the bad guy", is he is okay with it as long as he is included. But ultimately they do consider Pierce a friend. They hang out with Pierce outside of school and do go out of their way to help him when needed. Pierce nor Britta exist solely to be the butt of the joke.
    Similarly, examples like Drake and Josh or Family Guy, while cruel, still makes sense. Families are dysfunctional and one person always ends up ignored or belittled. Characters like Josh or Meg are not one dimensional.
    However, it doesn't work on shows like Parks and Rec, The Office, 30 Rock, or Scrubs because these are workplace sitcoms. The victims are relegated to tertiary characters at best. The main protagonist of the show doesn’t consider the victim a friend. These people coexist only when they work together, never because they want to be. For someone as kind as Leslie Knope, it ruins her integrity that she would allow Jerry to be picked on.
    The punching bag among friends/family is in on the joke. They know their role within the group and chose to stay with them because they have other personal ties. Someone who is constantly ridiculed and harassed daily at their job may not have a choice. Which is why I find the bullying in these situations that much more sinister.

      What are you smoking. "The main character doesn't consider the victim a friend". Have you even watched parks and rec? Yes she considers him family. Literally leslies entire personality is how much she loves her work and her colleagues. Also the whole joke with jerry is that while he gets picked on at work he literally has the best life outside of there(gorgeous wife and daughters that love him a hude dick(literally this is a part of the canon lol) and many loving other friends). It's the reason gerry works. While the scenes are sad when seen without the rest of the context it doesn't change that it can't be compared to say someone like Toby of the office. Toby is written to be unlikeable by most of the cast and have a losers life to the point that he is the worst one at the end of the story. Meanwhile Jerry's end in the story is that he literally becomes mayor of town and is beloved and voted for many terms and lives a long happy life. While they improved on the picked on character in brooklyn with Boyle and perfected it I would say Jerry is still a pretty good example of the "butt of the joke" trope working nicely and not being objectively cruel as is Toby. But to say the main character doesn't consider him a friend. Wow

      @@Enel97 In the context of a WORKPLACE sitcom, “friends” are people who spend time together by choice. People tend to have groups of friends: work friends, childhood friends, family friends, social media friends, etc. But most people have a select group of close people that they regularly spend time with and share personal information with. It’s perfectly okay to not be friends with your coworkers because most people have lives that aren’t defined by their job/career.
      Yes, Leslie Knope is “friends” with Gary in sense that Gunther is friends with Monica on Friends or Penny is friends with Stuart on The Big Bang Theory. It’s just surface level friendship without any real connection. But how close is Leslie’s friendship with Gary? She didn’t even know his real name. While she may not be an active part in Jerry getting bullied, she rarely stands up for him. They dismiss his mural idea, they have a "Jerry filter" on their email, they have “Jerry Dinner”, and Ron hired Jerry back as a favor for Tom, who couldn’t handle being the "new Jerry". How is that not cruel? Ann calls out Tom, April, Andy, and Donna for being so mean spirited. Chris, Ben, Ann, and later Donna are only ones that are genuinely shown to be nice him. The reason the Jerry/Gary situation works is because Gary doesn’t mind being made fun of. In this case, Gary has a choice.
      The situation is different with Toby on The Office, not because Toby is unlikable, but because Toby is not a willing participant of the joke. Michael is a terrible person (unintentional, but still terrible), and hence has no friends and tries to force his coworkers to spend time with him. Jim is also terrible to Dwight but the difference is that Dwight isn’t one dimensional. His character grows throughout the show. Toby is about as important to the show as Bob Vance. Toby has no purpose yet he hasn’t actively done anything that should garner so much hate, like Ryan.
      A these examples succeed or fail because of the tone of the show. The Office is not a feel good show and relies too heavily on “cringe” comedy. We know little to nothing on most of their personal lives. So no, I wouldn’t consider anyone on The Office “friends” with Toby, Meredith, Kevin, or Creed.

I had two friends I hung out with for a year in HS and one of them would always make me the punching bag for laughs. I was always bothered by it but continued to laugh along thinking it was okay since it was a joke. But it's very obvious now that I was clearly uncomfortable but chose to continue being friends in order to not be alone. My kid has been watching through Parks & Rec recently for the first time, and through her eyes, the Jerry stuff really comes off worse than ever. It also just seems out of character for Leslie Knope in particular to bag on him so much.
    As you pointed out, though, I do think the trope works well in Sunny. I also think it works well in Brooklyn 99, too.

  • @megan1214
    @megan1214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I've always felt weird watching innocent characters get picked on, especially in shows like Parks and Rec where the nicest people are the bullies. Jerry is just sweet and innocent and hasn't done anything to deserve it. The fact that he has an amazing and perfect life outside of work doesn't make me feel any better about it. I know that's the joke, but like a lot of others have pointed out, it just doesn't make sense that the other characters, who we're supposed to be rooting for, all have this incredibly mean streak when it comes to him specifically. And even though Toby has been a bit strange at times, it definitely doesn't justify being harassed like he is. Someone who deserves it, sure, but with these characters who just mind their own business but still get ruthlessly laughed at and bullied, it has never sat right with me. I think comedies really missed the mark with this trope, especially with some of the more intense remarks and attitudes towards the innocent characters.

  • @panzy7871
    @panzy7871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    It's good to know that other people found the treatment of Jerry uncomfortable (bleak, even). I soured on parks and rec once I realized how conditional its ~compassion and optimism for humanity~ are.

    • @panzy7871
      @panzy7871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The office is usually better about this but meredith and kevin, while afforded more psychological complexity, are still..... so shortchanged. I honestly think sunny is the more compassionate show toward its characters on the whole.

    • @Orbowitz

      @@panzy7871The thing about always sunny is that all the characters are irredeemable assholes. Which makes it funny.

    It’s crazy that the end portion basically communicates the other end of the spectrum as to why I personally hate this easy target trope: I’m always worried that I’m that jerry or going to be that jerry at some point. You know?

    • @LPempty
      @LPempty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The thing is, when it comes to other ones the characters are just butts of a joke for entertainment. Jerry has a perfect life, a perfect family, he is creative, has many hobbies that he is good at, is innovative, humble etc etc. them making fun of him is more of a representation of their character not his. So if you’re wondering abt that question you’re more wondering if others are being cruel to you to make themselves feel better which is sadly a common thing humans do.

    I only just finished a rewatch of P&R and the whole Jerry/Larry/Gary thing was even more tough to watch this time around. The guy is straight up one of the sweetest, most reliable and loyal people in the whole series and he's just constantly shit on because he's clumsy (and overweight, I've noticed a lot of Schur's shows like to take jabs at fat people). The only redeeming thing is the fact he always seems happy and has a loving family, and he has said a few times in the show he doesn't really care about work, what matters is his home life, but the gang don't even know that until later in the series. I know some folk in the comments is saying that the point of the joke is that it's OOC for everyone to be so nasty to him, but it feels really disconnected when P&R always pushes for positivity and friendship and then they turn around and continue that shit with Gary. Much of the show is about that feel good mentality and yet the characters still harass one of their colleagues on the daily for the lolz. I really liked when Ben got to spend a day with Gary where they shared interests, Gary got to show off his talents, and Ben realised he was a great guy, but then they STILL resorted back to the playground jokes of him admitting to the gang he liked Gary and immediately getting shot down and ridiculed with finger pointing.
    I think the show gives a much better balance of how an 'easy target' should be in Ben as a character; he's got some interests that a lot of main stream society consider odd, and he's an unashamed nerd who's anxious and easily panicked, and while the gang do mock him for those attributes, they also are usually shown to at least try and show some interest in it, and there tends to be storylines about Ben gaining respect from others via his own talents. He is often the butt of jokes, but it never feels vindictive and usually gets resolved. Essentially the gang accept him for who he is. It did kind of suck when Leslie dismissed his Cones game as stupid and told him to throw it away, and then later we see it go on to be a huge success. Buuuut at least there's precedent for her character being extremely controlling, especially over interests.

    I feel like it’s also important to point out that the “easy target” for a lot of these shows were people who were easily coded as neurodivergent. And this bullying on screens leads to bullying off screen of people with autism or ADHD or other mental stuff that seem “weird”. It’s interesting.

    • @Artisticmonkey2
      @Artisticmonkey2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I've done my best to be a better person in recent years - I picked on people, lovingly or not, because it gave me a sense of control and honestly those jokes are easy to make.
    But realising that it's not okay, even if everyone's okay with it, made me rethink a lot. I started light-heartedly booing mean jokes, and lifting up the "easy targets" in our group. A couple times I straight up said "It's not funny, don't be an ass". And during this, everyone followed along with the change.
    I suppose the lesson is bystanders only help the oppressors; though that seems a bit over the top for such a situation.
    Becoming a kinder person sucks, because first you have to admit your faults to yourself and the people around you. But it really is worth it.

    I always found it so strange that parks and rec had all of the characters be so mean to Jerry, It always felt so out of place to me because characters that are generally so nice are so rude. I mean I know its a comedy show, but it always felt cheap and forced. I have always thought that show did the joke the least funny, though it was still funny some of the time.

    I like shows where the characters are unlikable because being likable is just so overrated in TV. I feel like the best shows have a cast of the worst most flawed people. They often get their comeuppance and it has much more weight to it when they do. I don't watch T.V to relate to fictional characters so I don't mind if they're terrible people. For example; IASIP, Community, Parks and Rec, Lovesick, Kim's Convenience, 30 Rock, Seinfeld.
    However, its just felt...wrong when the gang picked on Jerry in P&R. I felt like I was supposed to laugh when they laughed at Jerry but I didn't most of the time. I didn't understand 'why' they didn't like him. Just that they were 'supposed' to and so was I. It actually became annoying to watch.
