"You probably remember this level from trying to unlock the cheat" Honestly this level stuck out to me as a kid because you could shoot the guy on the shitter.
I hit the 'like' button before even beginning to watch it. I love this series and it's why I subscribed. Thank you for the free entertainment and fascinating information.
Absolutely brilliant as always! I love that you demonstrated a "casual" playthrough first, to really accentuate the level of optimization that we see afterward. I go into these videos not really knowing where the final record stands so I am on the edge of my seat the entire time, and get my mind blown that there is yet another faster time. Without your commentary and perspective, the level of skill on display is largely unappreciated by the casual to moderate viewer such as myself. Thank you so much for this series, I love every second of these. Keep up the fantastic work. Cheers!
I love your channel. I'm happy to see that the death of detstar didn't mean the end of fascination with this game. Rareware had the perfect mix of innovation and perfection with game back then. Subscribed.
Yeah seriously. That site opened up so many doors. I wrote him back in 2007 about the site. He sent me an image of the site when it was working. I may have it saved somewhere. We are now showing our age hah.
I really enjoy these videos, been a fan of Goldeneye ever since I first played it back in the day.Perfect Dark as well. Keep up the good work, Goose baby
+assault410 It was one of the best games ever made when it was released in 1997, and although it probably has aged quite a bit it still has a lot of charm, and you will probably enjoy it if you try it out.
Awesome vid, I killed an hour and 30 minutes on my way to my destination, I drive in my job a lot. I swear to God you are the GoldenEye speedrunning librarian historian. you are giving us so much detailed insight into the history of speed running on this game, it's really amazing, something that probably only you can do as well as you do. Keep it up man!
i swear i remember seeing the 98 sterling speedrun. i think it may have been the first video game footage i ever saw on the computer and it could very well have been another run and the sheer speed at which the player traversed the level just blew my brain away - at the time. here is what i remember... he threw a mine near the first control center to wipe out the guards (without blowing up the control center). also he threw a mine to blow up the boxes to wipe out the guards above before you enter the laboratory. doak was in the ideal location. and he would also throw mines in between the tanks and detonate them mid air.
Spot on - This run at (13:52 in gooses speedlure video above) was the FIRST EVER recorded WR for the Goldeneye N64 due to the Nintendo Power Magazine Facility OOA "challenge" in 1998
In '98 I mailed in a photograph to Nintendo Power Magazine's contest with a time of 1m36s. A full 7 seconds faster than their own game tester's time of 1m43s. A few months later they posted the fastest time: 1m25s, with third place around 1m30s. I foolishly thought I had a chance LOL! But running that level hundreds of times in those months were some of the best memories I have of gaming.
This is cool you mentioned this because I saw this same challenge by Nintendo Power which they showed 1:25 - Actually just posted a reply above stating this on someone elses post - They were giving away a "gold controller" if someone could beat their time - I also was going to elude to my post that I thought it was "picture" proof valid - I sent them this Facility OOA WR video you see above of 1:04 (13:52 in gooses sppedlore above) which they threw it out as "impossible" - They said no one could go that fast and dismissed my submitted video proof ....funny because its "VIDEO proof" and NOT "picture proof" lol - Now Nintendo Power Magazine WHERES MY GOLD CONTROLLER! Design it in bespoke 007 insignia please with some cool graphics w 1:04 a cool facility backsplash on the controller my name in gold with 007 on the controller =)! Clyde nice to hear your story and mine collided and gives validation to what I saw - Also you validated they ran the "challenge" in 1998! which being released end of 1997 was within the year the game was released and my video above was documented a full year infront of Mike Martin which Goose has mentioned wrong in this speed lore - I don't blame him because he wasn't around however if he ever reincarnates these lures I can give him factual initial documentation that this was one of the ***** FIRST WR video EVER recorded for the game!*****
I have no more words to say how amazing this series is, so I'll just say that at 54:43 you type EXACTLY like the chars do in the game. At first I thought it was the video lmao.
Depot agent is by far my favorite. I've enjoyed it unbelievably. This one is also good but not as close as depot agent. I can't wait for the next episode. And I'm not even into speedrunning. That's how you know your videos are freaking awesome. Keep up the good work sir, keep up the good work. :)
I could never unlock Invincibility. I watched this video and it inspired me to give it another go. After a few hours I was able to get a 2:01 and finally unlock the elusive cheat.
I love these. It's neat seeing the progression of the optimization. When I still played we didn't know much, but we were working towards this. I can't believe this continued and is still going on. It almost makes me want to get back into it, cause I know I could improve on what I had done back then, with the new knowledge the community had come up with. I start speed running because of Facility as well. I read in a magazine that someone had 1:05 on 00, and I searched the internet for video and found the Goldeneye rankings, and started running. Kind of stings to know that those runs where everything completes but the time doesn't save actually counted, cause I had a bunch of those and I just didn't count them, cause I just assumed they didn't count.
through your speed running videos i've learnt so many general things about goldeneye i didn't know about, generally i was interested in videos of old games like goldeneye for interesting secrets etc, and this channel i've learnt heaps about one of my favourite games
Playing this as a kid I never knew what "casualties" meant and so I never knew why I passed that objective when I did. I asked my dad what it meant but he feigned ignorance, I guess to dodge a difficult question about death. Seemingly pointless considering the game I was playing but eh.
When the N-64 came out in EU, me and my friends were already 14-15 years old and our english reading skills were very very poor. Back in those days knowing english wasn't really that common here where i'm from. It really made the games much harder, like OOT for example. We often had discussions about what that and that sentence(and words) could mean lol. But little by little we learned, most of our english skills came via games. Ahh, good memories, the happy 90s.
Facility 00 Agent got me. Played this endlessly, honing it. BTW, if you look up in the pipes under the stairs / passageways under where you start, there is some beakers and vials hidden up on the pipes - bit weird, never figured why. Also the no-smoking sign is a no-bond sign
One of the first people I subscribed to on TH-cam back in 2006 or 2007 was a guy who did commentated DLTK runs for Facility and Frigate. He ended up deleting his videos to make his channel into a shrine for some sports reporter woman who he was stalking. I don't know if anyone else remembers him.
I believe you're thinking of undercoverfilmer00v. I remember looking forward to his upcoming "double feature" DLTK which he never got around to completing.
53:30. Isn’t that a quote from Perfect Dark? Can’t remember off the top of my head what level, although I think it’s Carrington Institute or one of the DataDyne ones. Edit: It's the President in Air Force One.
@@kahvamiestestailee2082 That's not a phrase that people say particularly often, and Goose said it in a GoldenEye 007 video. It was almost definitely a reference to that line from the spiritual sequel "Perfect Dark".
24:32 Could some explain this "time not saved" glitch? From the video, my guess/understanding is that if the mission ends on the same frame that any mission objectives are cleared then any end cinematic won't play and the time won't be saved as the "Best Time" on the cartridge. Is that accurate? And to be clear, does that mean that waiting another frame to exit the level on these runs would have avoided the glitch?
undercover filmer did it in 1999 and had a video up on here, and some other levels but those were years later. His camera gear was stolen and he unfortunately removed his channel, but im sure someone here will remember this, I never joined the elite but id check out your videos and times way back in like 2004, and im still here now, amazing how much this game sticks with you.
that was dltk to btw, he took the slow and steady route, louring 1 guard at a time to hold points such as the bathroom and kill with 10 headshots, then do it again with the next guard, and so on, 2nd hold point was doaks first location.
you can still find other peoples videos they made of facility dltk and they mention this guy, videos are still on youtube, but having used that strat to beat levels dltk, I feel this guy should get recognition bc he had posted proof years ago, recorded on vhs and a post commentary added afterwards explaining what he was doing. Illu made the term dltk and pioneered it, but this guy beat it and had a video from way back in 1999
I couldn't beat the 1st level back in the day I didn't know how to open the damn gate where the truck was... I was like in 1st grade lol but my friend said u press B hahaha no internet back then to ask how to beat level u had to do it yourself!
I know a guy who used to be extremely socially anxious when I hung out with him during the 90s - he would be almost completely silent in large crowds and he even was silent for a few minutes when I came and visited him, even when _he himself_ had asked if we could hang out that day. But I used to be like that myself at school during my first years in elementary school so I related to that, so I basically just waited a little while until he felt more at ease every time I visited him, and then after that he would be quite talkative. He has made a lot of progress since then though, and now he is more or less like Bryan Bosshardt in the AGDQ videos - still a bit timid, but definitely more comfortable.
you my friend have a great way with words and know how to create superb content. Your passion for what you do is a true inspiration. with that being said, I absolutely love coming home after a long day to relaxing and watch your channel while playing gamecube. rwhitegoose YOU ARE KLLLUTCHHH af bro
Though a somewhat average player (finished all difficulties + unlocked all cheats) I have always loved speedrunning to an extent due too Goldeneye's target times. Though I haven't watched or partaken in the act really outside of in game time trials such as Goldeneye and PD cheats. I also enjoyed Tomb Raider Anniversary's time trials. I played resident evil 5's mercenaries mode competitive with a low tier character and that was a score/time based mode and got some character based Wrs. Your videos are making me want to just get some personal bests on Goldeneye.
I remember this level, it took me forever to beat, but probably cuz I wanted to kill all the enemy soldiers before doing any of the objectives. I should really pick this game back up and see if I can get these crazy times.
I paid a kid in school to complete the game and get all the cheats for me in the 90s. At age 40 I finally put the hours in and completed the game myself. A year later I've finally got the invincibility cheat. I was inspired to do it by Goose and other speedrunners as it's really nothing compared to what they do. With the 2:05 you just need to persevere really and you get there in the end.
Going back it’s odd. The fail screen was for a failed bunker run so most likely it was recorded on a VHS he used for recording runs on often. Frequently recording footage on the same tape will cause wear and weird glitches as a result. Idk if this run would’ve counted by today’s standards in all honesty haha
Used VHS tapes back then (1998-2001) and accidentally cut into this WR run upon trying to put on other world record proof videos along with this facility OOA on a single VHS tape -Thats just the way we could record back in that era - As you can see for whatever reason the 1:04 appears a few seconds later so I'm not sure why the video was showing something within the few seconds - Again I'm not an expert recorder by any means at the age of 15 however to show vintage day strats for proof my videos WR were some of the earliest for the game - I don't really recall seeing many videos as not many players were recording video proof in my era at all - Im pretty sure I recorded a run just after my WR Facility 1:04 which I'll presume the VHS cut over into the end of the Facility OOA run when trying to edit in other times onto the VHS - Sent this exact video into one of the magazines showing 1:25 as their "record" from their game testers and they were giving a GOLD controller for the fastest time if anyone could beat it - They contacted me back and said the time was not real and no one could go that fast (1:04) - SO although having VIDEO PROOF the time was never posted to their magazine =( - It was insanely fast for the infancy of speed running era" which even the game testers were baffled at someone could complete OOA status at :21 seconds faster than their "game testers" - (Essentially everything was optimize as far as doak location and optimizing guards to open doors which again probably wasn't thought of by the game testers) Still feel like I'm owed a GOLD controller from the N64 Magazine or whichever magazine it was back then that posted the challenge for FACILITY OOA - This "challenge" by the magazine actually gave me the incentive/initiative to start "speed running" - So you all should give credit to not only myself pushing for video records however the magazine who was able to put out a "challenge" which is how we got to where we are today at the.elite.net - *****Also this video was achieved BEFORE the year 2000 and before Mike Martins Facility Agent time because I was the one who came up with shooting down the stairs on facility strat via gamefaqs as this strategy is still being employed today (Had I seen Mike Martins video proof then I would have certainly utilized his mine boost strategy prior to doak which makes it evident that Mike saw my video and emulated my strats on his runs yes even the bottle room as I always threw the mines in-between the bottles) " This actual video uploaded or was "documented" upload was maybe 3.10.2000 however the time was achieved when the magazine ran the challenge which if I remember correctly was prior to the year 2000 as the game came out in 1997.....I would suggest that the magazine ran the "challenge" of Facility OOA the year of the RELEASE of the game as the video may be the FIRST ever recorded video WR in goldeneye *****
I remember unlocking this cheat and feeling like a god afterward. If I remember correctly, I kept going for the Doak spawn where he was by the labs, but not inside them. I don't remember my actual time unfortunately...
Goose I absolutely love your speedlore series, and look up to you when I speed run. I think you are a legend of Goldeneye. You can check me out on the elite (Fraser Lomax). stay true
People were speedrunning Super Mario Bros. as soon as the warps were discovered and Metriod (to see all the endings). And Super Mario Kart was built for speedrunning. Love your videos
As Goldeneye world champion from 97-2001 - Also had some Mario Kart early WR's along with many shortcut WR's...had a top 20 ToadsTurnpike SC record (and National Record) that held for over 25+ years till recently when a new SC was derived which actually ruined the original shortcut start...too bad as the new shortcut imho is trash and ruined TT...oh well what can you do though..
What's the deal with the pause at 28:42? He's way closer to the door when exiting the pause screen than when he entered it, is that distance just from the boost?
I remember reading how the cheat menu & the speed challenges to unlock them were last-minute additions (IIRC, the debug inputs to activate them still work, both on the menu and in-game), and I do have to wonder if perhaps some of the designers at Rare were inspired by the (at the time) newly emerging Quake speedrunning community. I wonder what those same designers would think about the scale of what speedrunning has become today...
On chance you see this comment on an old video. Buikema's theorycrafted strategy where he runs into the scientist room to alert open the next door (1:19:00 in video) was done on agent difficulty for proof of concept. Aren't there already issues with ammo reserves on 00A though? You would probably need to take out an additional guard or maybe even two (looks like Randy fired 15 rounds in that room). Idk where I'm going with this, just thoughts.
I remember throwing a mine somewhere in the bathroom and detonating it as I went down the stairs. It killed the guard holding the keycard. Could that save any time?
if you get the glitch where the time doesn't save does it count as beating the level? does the game allow you to move on and play the next level if you get that glitch in the first play through of facility?
*Goose is a legend! SpeedLore is put together so well, it is unfair if people are not desperately throwing large bags of cash at Goose's door in an attempt to block him inside, forcing him to make more episodes. You could block his door with something less expensive, but you know he deserves large bags of cash.* To anyone interested: uncompressed, high-quality recordings of GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark music began surfacing in 2017 via a TH-cam user named "GoldenEye 007 + Perfect Dark Music" (in the form of 30-minute videos). I edited the best GoldenEye 007 tracks to normal listening lengths and uploaded them to my account. They sound amazing. Until recently, most of us have not been able to hear these songs in such great quality when we aren't directly playing on a console, either because uncompressed files weren't released or because they were difficult to obtain. Enjoy!
I remember that I read instructions on how to get this cheat back in 1998 as a 12-year-old kid, and one guide mentioned in passing that someone had been able to get it in 1:25, and I was like "NO WAY", lmao.
39:20. That guy focusing in the mirror resembles Tricky Dicky to me at least. The real question is are you born good at things or does it need to be learned? It feels like a combination of both though some people are better at learning than others. Practicing things too because they're more dedicated.
I could be an adult and mention how much I love this series but I'd rather comment on how funny it is that your name in the chat window is "RWhiteGoo..."
Dumbest part about this level is the fact that you fail if Trev dies, but in the movie the game is based on he's supposed to be caught in the explosion and presumed dead.
I think the best part about MR never having a WR on this level is I didn't have to have a borderline seizure watching his video quality.
You mean that's the worst part about this level
"You probably remember this level from trying to unlock the cheat"
Honestly this level stuck out to me as a kid because you could shoot the guy on the shitter.

you can still find other peoples videos they made of facility dltk and they mention this guy, videos are still on youtube, but having used that strat to beat levels dltk, I feel this guy should get recognition bc he had posted proof years ago, recorded on vhs and a post commentary added afterwards explaining what he was doing. Illu made the term dltk and pioneered it, but this guy beat it and had a video from way back in 1999
Great Vid Goose! Stay true my friends, stay true...
I couldn't beat the 1st level back in the day I didn't know how to open the damn gate where the truck was... I was like in 1st grade lol but my friend said u press B hahaha no internet back then to ask how to beat level u had to do it yourself!
Always nice to listen to this while speedrunning LTK
Is the original Rare team watching these speedrun forums as developments? What do they think of all this? It must be very exciting from them
I know a guy who used to be extremely socially anxious when I hung out with him during the 90s - he would be almost completely silent in large crowds and he even was silent for a few minutes when I came and visited him, even when _he himself_ had asked if we could hang out that day.
I need to get decent at this game again. Loved going for the cheat.
loving these vids keep it up mate nice to see the history of such a fantastic game
Wow thank you a whole hour of facility - like a kid in a candy store !
Ps: everyone agrees that this level introduced speed running to the world 👍
Though a somewhat average player (finished all difficulties + unlocked all cheats) I have always loved speedrunning to an extent due too Goldeneye's target times.
So wait, why did Sterling's end screen at 15:42 show the mission aborted with all objectives failed? Did I miss something?
After checking, it's probably a bug.
There should be a SpeedLore series about Perfect Dark as well I believe.
You did it
"Dark License to Kill" should be renamed "License to Die"
I don't even speedrun this game but I enjoy this a lot.
I love this series! Thanks Goose!
53:30 I asshume you have some?
Awesome work! Love these videos!
I remember unlocking this cheat and feeling like a god afterward. If I remember correctly, I kept going for the Doak spawn where he was by the labs, but not inside them. I don't remember my actual time unfortunately...
I NEED A N64 NOW!!!
Love your videos man. Have you seen the boundry break video on Goldeneye? i think ud find it interesting
God damn you make me want to start speedrunning this game lol. Your vids are so good
Goose
I absolutely love your speedlore series, and look up to you when I speed run. I think you are a legend of Goldeneye. You can check me out on the elite (Fraser Lomax). stay true
just wanted to point out that when Goose was typing the clickety-clackety sounded just like Natalya on the keyboard in Control / Train.
23:33
I'm actually gonna argue he hides behind the wall so he can potentially get a boost through the door at full speed.
That was my thought too. Botched it though.
Crazy, really puts into perspective just how important the boosts are!
Guys, about the bad trevs, what if you throw the mine high up on the tank? Does he still get hurt by the mine or the tank explosion?
RWhiteGoose shut.
Totally dig the music on the video you showed around the 11 minute mark.
007 mode unlocked. Invinsibilty was the last one, and most difficult cheat to get. I remember the experience thoroughly.
+RWhiteGoose Ah that makes sense then, I was just a bit curious . Thanks for the response and thanks for all the great Goldeneye lore!

*Goose is a legend! SpeedLore is put together so well, it is unfair if people are not desperately throwing large bags of cash at Goose's door in an attempt to block him inside, forcing him to make more episodes. You could block his door with something less expensive, but you know he deserves large bags of cash.*
To anyone interested: uncompressed, high-quality recordings of GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark music began surfacing in 2017 via a TH-cam user named "GoldenEye 007 + Perfect Dark Music" (in the form of 30-minute videos).
Needs more M Y F R I E N D S
Santos and Rützou disliked this video
I'm just here to ponder if the goose is loose. Also, great videos.
Love these videos!
What exactly happened about the door at 1:06:34? I couldn't understand him.
Fun fact: if you're out of mines when you reach the tanks, Bond mentions 'it was a bit tricky'
Underappreciated details!
I love these lore videos
18:15
Wait
Wouter is still active? I thought he disappeared after his bunker 1 last hurrah?
If he did a door warp at 18:30, he could cut off another second?
Dumbest part about this level is the fact that you fail if Trev dies, but in the movie the game is based on he's supposed to be caught in the explosion and presumed dead.
Also, if you accidentally hit him then he gets angry and there is no way to stop him after that.
