My dear late farther painted that robert jarvis sign on thornton road.infact he did it in our front room as often did with many projects that he did before they were fitted.he was also responsible for the gold leaf signwriting at rimmingtons chemist in the town centre
another smashing post Vitty's was one fantastic chip shop as soon as you walk to the door you shouted Special please that way it was ready when you got the front of the queue, Also the pecking order was Special & chips for the dad, fish & chips for the mam & fishcake & chips for the kids, and even now wgen i go back "home " i order fishcakes to bring back with me lol
Its,funny.You look at signs from the 80.s and reminisce and remember your youth.I am just the same with the 60,s and 70,s in Bradford.By the 80,s I had taken the advice of Norman Tebbit and lterally got on a bike.At first to France for 5 years and then to West Berlin where i have been ever since.What i mean ,i suppose, is that it,s all relative as the years go by but i just had to get out ot that place and broaden my mind.Little Bradford and Little England mentality was never for me although i would never have thought like that at the time,it was instinctive.
Yes it did used to be the Red Ginn. I’ve not misspelt gin, I am pretty sure it was double N at the end. Reason I remember is that the parents of one of my old school pals were the licensees back in the 70,s. They were of Polish origin and the surname was Zaranko. We used to go play pool and bar billiards on a Sunday afternoon when it was closed for a few hours after the lunchtime session. Good old days and happy memories.
The kind of signs I look out for the most are the painted advertisements that remain on old houses. Many are faded these days but you see the odd one. Shame we don’t paint on the side of buildings anymore to advertise a local brand or company. another bygone practise.

We call them ghost signs “brilliant clip”
