My dad was a bell hanger at Whitechapel till 1972, he hung the original 10 of Guildford Cathedral plus also Bow.
    Whitechapel specialised in light 8s.
Dad had a saying, Whitechapel for trebles and Taylors for tenors.
Taylor were and still are the heavy metal experts.

@@Steven_Rowe not sure I agree with that, Whitechapel cast some stunning big bells. I sometimes feel some big Taylor tenors don't have the guts they should have. Obviously there are some stunning rings too. Personally I like the brighter, crisp tone of Whitechapel bells.

Whitechapel produced very fine tenors. The problem as I understand it is Whitechapel were obsessed with what they called, 'a tonally balanced ring'. They fitted large clappers in the trebles, and proportionately small clappers in the tenors. The result was rather feeble sounding back ends. I was told that as installed in 1928, all 12 bells at St. martin's, Birmingham had the same sized clappers balls! If you want proof that Whitechapel can produce good, gutsy backe ends, I recommend you listen to Bow bells, now that they have better proportioned clappers. The result is stunning. I therefore disagree with your last sentence.

@95tupolev well I have rung at bow and as I said, my dad hung them.
He also hung St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney a 34cwt 12 plus two semis.
Bow does sound great but Taylor tenors seem to have more breath to them.
Sadly the peal of bells I would truly love to hear are absolutely ruined by crap accoustics of the tower and I'm talking about Liverpool Cathedral.

@@wereswdfgrdesd well yes but they were based at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry so I think it's reasonable to say they are Whitechapel bells 🔔
