  • Just a quick video showing the differences between the imported versions and domestic versions of vise grips locking pliers. It a bit rough and my first attempt at this type of video so excuse any mistakes. I consider more of a demo and might re-do it at a later date. Thanks! - D

      @@danielpatterson6598 I guess snapon has been selling them for a few months now, but at something like $75 a piece, so in theory malco should he cheaper.
      I heard they used snapon as a test run, to work out the bugs.

    You can still buy some old stock malco eagle grips made in dewitt nebraska. They work really well and dominated the competition in Project Farm's locking pliers comparison video. I have the wide grip 7" and 10" and the difference in quality to other brands is insane.

    I have 2 vise grips that belonged to my dad, dating from the late '40's. Quality wise, I think the new ones are better, definitely better plating, and the release lever was a big improvement.

    ....also, the comment about some made in Taiwan....I was looking at them recently at Ace Hardware, looking to see if I might luck up and find some NOS American ones...No such luck, but I did notice the very small ones(4", 5" maybe?) did say "Made in Taiwan", the larger sizes all said "China". The little Taiwan ones did seem better made/fit finish than the China ones....If they are going to offshore, I would prefer if they made them all in Taiwan, not China.....let China make the flimsy no-brand ones with the huge rivets....

    • @danielpatterson6598
      @danielpatterson6598  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The straight long nose actually. Always been my favorite. I used to have an old Schrade version multi tool with the long nose that I always carried but it got ganked at a job one day. Been looking for another for awhile now. I I like having the wire cutter but not a necessary thing.

    As an owner of the American made set of Vise grips I can assure you the quality of these far surpasses even the best Chinese manufactured ones that I have encountered. I recommend to friends buy the Dewitt made ones second hand or from old stock (very very rare and if your lucky). The hardness and durability of the jaws just seems to have a quality that Irwin seem to have lost. If my Snap on dealer wanted to buy my Vise grips for what I paid in the 1990s and give me also two set of the latest ones I'd refuse.

      Well it so happens that I just went to Sears today and unfortunately you are right. Craftman locking pliers are now made in China. It was only less than a year ago that I saw on the package that they were made in the US.

    • @Pro1er
      @Pro1er 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure how much weight that carries anymore. I have a set of Craftsman ignition wrenches that were, (supposedly), made in the USA and I kid you not, I've never seen a worse looking tool in my life. I don't think I've ever bought an import tool with a finish as bad as these Craftsman. In fact, the tools at the Dollar store look like they are better quality - and that's no joke. The only reason I kept them is because the set has some extremely hard to find sizes, plus they were on sale for $10. Maybe Stanley will come to the rescue.

    The late USA production Irwin ones are pretty sloppy, pretty much the same as the Chinese ones. I have a couple pairs of them. Also, they say "Made in USA of global components". Since "global components" pretty much means "Chinese components", I strongly suspect they were Chinese parts assembled in USA. Not "the original" by any means. I believe any of the Irwin ones are not much good.....

    Which is better the old USA made or the Chinese imports. Consider companies like Sony have their stuff made in China and everyone knows a Sony will last till you get rid of it.

    • @danielpatterson6598
      @danielpatterson6598  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer the old USA ones. (Pre Irwin) I feel they are better made than the newer ones. As for country of origin? That doesn't matter as much. Anyone can make a good quality tool. But I don't feel that the new ones are as good as the old. Not that they can't but that they aren't. But again that is just my opinion.
