M4 owner here, since June. I had an E92 M3 before and loved it, but it was getting older and needed work. I wasn't sure at first, but the M4 is an incredible car. Compared to the E92, it feels absolutely glued to the road, while putting down impressive power constantly (also with minimal wheelspin, even in low gears). Albert Biermann and the M team are geniuses.
Tom B I'm interested in the 4.6l stroker version of this car by dinan. You get the low down torque plus better fuel economy and the power. But the m4 is a different beast. Its the best
Watching this video gave me a understanding of how much hard work, integrity and passion went into making the M4. Proud to own one, I need this engineer to spec out my next one 😁
Any issues with them reliability-wise? Thinking of getting an F80. I love the Giulia QF, but owning an Alfa is a bit sketchy lol (former Lancia owner).
Very nice interview, these kinds of interviews with the heads of engineering on these special cars we all like, it is just great to hear their thoughts and takes regarding the evolvement of these models. And Spinelli, as always applause for you.
Although I want a 4 cylinder turbo, sub 3000lb M3; I have to respect Albert Biermann and BMW in general for letting the Engineers have more free range instead of giving all the power to the accountants. I love how enthusiastic Albert is his orchestra analogy. BMW and Porsche are amazing.
Great job for such an informative source to share his wealth of knowledge with us BMW enthusiasts, as well as others. I have owned the M4-GTS since new and I can say it's an incredible work of art. Absolutely love the performance in all aspects. Bravo BMW.
Have had my AY M4 6 speed for 3.5 years now. I can only imagine Albert throwing up in his mouth at the new G8x models. Way bigger , way heavier, way uglier, cost saving everywhere including crap steel bracing underhood, fake vents glued to the front fenders, carbon ceramics with single piston slide calipers in the rear 💀 . Have been considering sale just because of the current market inflation and dealers offering me pretty much why I paid for the car back then… just can’t find anything to replace it with. Had to rewatch this video again and it made me appreciate the f8x greatness. True peak of //M 🙌🏼
E46 M3 is my dream car. Not to buy and just drive, but dream car as in Modification, body tuning, engine tuning, then drive from South African N1 to German Autobahn with that sexy throttle.
Rear wheel drive 2 door coupe, Twin Turbo, an inline 6 cylinder engine that was designed for turbocharging from the start, 3500 lbs, 52/48 f/r weight distribution, 4 piston front/ 2 piston rear brakes that can do 70-0 mph in 151 ft, aluminum suspension and body components, 6 speed manual gearbox.....its seems that BMW just rebuilt the MK4 Toyota Supra Turbo!!!!!!!!
"The balls in there are the best quality balls you can get", and right there pretty much sums up the new M3 and M4 which have 3 and 4 balls respectively...#BimmerBalls
How do M-sport manage to 'hide' the turbo's effects? from what the Engineering VP said, it seems like they successfully made it as responsive (if not better) than the previous V8 engine.
They've gotten really, really precise about the exhaust gas flow through the turbos. Along with variable cam timing and direct injection, and other tech, they've been able to "tune out" most negative effects of the turbos spooling up. The S55 engine's also got a shorter stroke than the 335i's N55 engine so, because piston speeds are lower relative to engine speeds, there's more flexibility (power at high revs).
João Soares Superchargers are considered relatively inefficient compared to turbos in that in order to make power from a supercharger some "naturally aspirated" power is taken up to drive the supercharger. Turbos, on the other hand, use exhaust gases to pressurize air and therefore don't suck power from the engine. This helps with gas mileage, overall efficiency, etc.
Great video Drive/ ! I thought I understood the highlights of this awesome car, but after hearing the german geezer speak about his product clearly I don't know nothing about this machine. Time for some googling! Cheers
This was definitely very informative. Good questions and answers. Bordering on being too technical for the ave joe. Having a mechanical engineering background would really help. One poster here does he claims. Probably has the best understanding of what was said. :)
dont want to be a nob but, when he mentions the e46 M3 CSL you show the M3 GTR. fyiCSL had the front bumper with intake only on one side, different interior, less sound proofing, higher revving (also duck tale boot lid!) nom
he spends about 7 minutes goin thru 4 great generations, not much word is needed actually, we confirmed their greatness Funny how he spends the rest of 14 minutes trying to argue/back up why new/complicated system should be better than before We get it, its faster. But we also get it, its just another turbo car, no soul of an M. Its okay. Stop trying so hard to explain, and just tell me why you put individual throttle body + NA motor in the 4 previous generations and how it affected the throttle response, and also explain why along with Ferrari and Nissan GTR, the previous M3s were the only production cars with individual throttle bodies. Complication doesnt make a car better. More isn't always better you know.. Sometimes you just need a high rev NA motor, simple hydraulic+direct steering, rwd, 50:50 balance and a 6MT...that made the M3 special, different from all the other cars.
The only problem is that our ancestors and us are fucking the planet and we only got 30 years of stock of petrol. We can't continue with high revving high drinking engines ( even if it's hard to say for me an //M fan and engine melodies ) if we still want to see cars on the road and that's what most of the people doesn't understand try to change your mind folks
No keep the v10! If I were you. I would save some money and buy an e46 m3. You can find good ones with 70-80k miles on them for about $15,000-$18,000! It's one hell of a car especially around corners!
Good conversation, makes you excited for the M3/M4, however since the car is $70K+ by the time you put two options in it, minus the ceramic brakes, it's way out of my price range. 5 Years from now when it's $40,000 car, we will see.
Dear Drive+! I live in Sweden and enjoy your excellent channel here, so thank you! But it is really IRRITATING that when I travel occasionally to our neighbour country Norway, I am not able to see any clips anymore! It says that I need to end my subscription in Sweden and start a new one here! I understand that this may be some system to prevent sharing accounts or protecting you property, but can't you fix this in any other way? And I know it could be fixed, because other programs do that! Otherwise keep up the good work! :)
why i feel like he doesnt believe the things he s saying about new M3 and M4.. yeah it looks bold it goes pretty fast.. but the sound of new M is so bad and in a confliction part almost all M drivers are not the fan of the new M3 and M4.. it wasnt like a step from E46 M3 to E92 M3..
The E30 M3 won like everything a touring car could win all around the globe. It even won hillclimb and rally races. The R32 GTR meanwhile was only really successful in Japan and in Australia.
E30 M3 won so many races it's silly. The E30 M3 was successful in rally, touring car, and hill climb; pretty insane to think that a car based on a sedan did so well.... But than again the E30 is legendary.
In other words, BMW built too much car for the average BMW driver. They just took it slightly too far and made it a little bit too true to the M mission and built a car that scares the shit out of their customer base, xD.
Max torque is from 1850-5500rpm, that means in that rev range the horsepower is linear, which makes it better actually. Furthermore you don't exit corners at 1800rpm on a race track, but above 5000 rpm.
On the corners where you'll be in the 1800rpm range then having peak torque that low will be an advantage, those low revs are for coming out of hairpins or tight corners where you'll be at WOT and need all the grunt you can get.
You're very ignorant if you think a low-rpm peak torque number means it won't exit well. That's all to do with the differential, see; every V8 powered miata.
I wasn't specifically talking about taking the car to a track, on the street having peak torque starting at 1,800 means if you're driving quick (not racing) and you flinch on the throttle pedal under load at corner exit, you're sideways. Also this car has +100 torques over the V8 which was already tail happy compared to the previous M3's. Race engines aren't built for high torque at low rpm b/c of the corner exit instability. Road cars however benefit greatly form this.. (Average people don't like revving out cars to pass on the highway for example) Yes you can mitigate the instability with the diff but the car will always be inherently unstable. So, the M3 is now more of a road car then ever. It's a great car but it's not the scalpel like weapon that it was. Apologies for the character count here.
Juan Galvis 550Nm of torque isn't enough to spin the wheels at 1800rpm, because if you have 550Nm at 1800rpm, then you have about 140hp at those revs (simple equation), which definetely isn't enough to spin those wide sticky rear tires.
I wish I could build an E30 M3 replica but with a VQ35DE engine (nissan 350z's) placed as far back as possible, out of a pre-facelift E30 316 or 318. Sadly I don't have the talent or the money :(
I guess you need the VP of M- department to try convince people that 3 liter twin turbo has the same or even better throttle response and racing feel on the limit of a high reving naturally aspirated engine when obviously all this downsizing is the result of EU emission restrictions. I get it gas is expensive and we love trees but if they really cared about maintaining the M- badge heritage they would have put the 5.0 liter V10 in it.

He also glosses over the question about electric steering. It can never be as real as hydraulic steering. Also Mike should have asked why the need to pipe in exhaust sound over the stereo. That really does not belong in an M car! Had a Z4 M Coupe and like an idiot I got rid of it. That was about as raw a modern M car got.
Was not a big fan of Bangle at first but his designs grew on me later. The current Z4 looks no better, there wasn't even an M version. Z4 M may not be the rawest M car for sure but it's was pretty simple car without crazy electronics controlling your driving environment.
Yeah that was a bad move lol, they're keeping/going up in value. Those cars are great, one of the stiffest chassis BMW produced and a perfect balance of power and handling with some small suspension work.
It overpriced German rubbish . its a 25k new car at most. its slower than a 30k type r, has half the warranty , uses twice as much fuel, costs more to tax and its got the BMW chav sticker on it . Its overpriced tat from the ultimate pile of rubbish company BMW .
