That game really was the perfect balance of visuals/performance on the Gamecube, super smooth, blindingly fast and never skipped a beat while looking quite good.
It wasn't enough to just be one great game too, F-Zero AX can easily be accessed or so I heard. I haven't acted on the discovery since I'm still getting good.
Not to mention it still shocks me how that game can cope with the absolutely insane speeds Speed-Runners can achieve in that game (Just watching 'CrazyGameNerd' speed-run Big Blue or smack 4000km+ on Aeropolis is almost nauseating!). And I can't go without saying that game's music (Composed by Hidenori Shoji [SEGA], composer & music director for the Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza series, with daiki kasho & Alan Bray providing character video themes) is absolutely off the bloody chain!
@@thelastgogeta You can unlock AX cup during normal play or even access the AX mode in GX through AR codes, but you won't actually get the handling and physics or the original arcade which was quite different from GX... to play AX either play the real thing or use nintendont on Wii which support triforce games...AX actually has every GX track (though some are earlier version of what we got in GX) and you can access them thanks to nintendont support for AR codes!

They don't include PC with most of their comparisons because they know console fans will be butt hurt. PC usually gets it's own videos so the console fans don't have to watch.
@@Digitaldelboy People need to know PS4/XONE isn't "Powerful Hardware". It always was a downgraded PC by a lot of ways, and without STEAM/multiple USB controllers.

30fps drops when your turning a corner. Going around a corner is exactly where you need 60fps
I'm just annoyed that GameXplain uploaded a "Switch Vs. Ps4" comparison video of this game and only showed the Pro version o3o so now people think that the ps4 version runs at a constant 60fps in general and don't realize that it's just the Ps4 Pro version that keeps frame rates. It's full of comments saying they need the 60fps version as it's important for such moments, but if they have a base model they'll be surprised that they won't Necessarily have that faster response in tight situations.
@@scarffoxandfriends9401 GameXplain did the same thing with their Hellblade PS4 vs Switch comparison. PS4 footage was with the Pro, which runs at a higher frame rate than the 30FPS the base PS4 and Switch target.
I don't mind frame drops,never bugs me.
Ive been playing the game and the frame drops arent even that noticable and when They are noticable, its not even for a half of a second.

Just look at the sonic racers on last gen. It'll look okay but run like crap. You're better off with the PS4 version.
I am a HUGE fan of the two previous Sonic racing games, I feel that they offer some great kart-style racing with also an arcade racer feel and I love how the tracks transform between laps. Of course, I own them on PC so I will probably buy this game on PC (according to the website, the PC version will be available August 29th). It definitely looks like a graphical upgrade from Transformed; I realize that not everything might be better but this type of game already looks great at speed when delivering a smooth 60 FPS like the PC versions do, so I don't mind minor niggles like shadows (perhaps the PC version is being delayed for additional emphasis on the details, who knows).
I know I'm going to end up buying it. I love these games. And I welcome more of them. Some of the best Sega games released in recent times, IMO.

Digital Foundry Oh wow... Is it possible that the irreplaceable, kings of tech analysis have also been placed on the infamous Bethesda blacklist? If so, that is really indicative of how butt hurt Bethesda can be by an outfit relaying literally nothing but unadulterated factual numbers and tech analysis of their products. I think out of all TH-cam media outlets/commentators, Digital Foundry provides a truly unique, irreplaceable service to gamers that literally NO ONE else even tries to provide. However, it can also be said that Digital Foundry stays very focused on the tech and the numbers and stays far away from the memes, business culture, and moral judgement, and therefore it is even more egregious if a company like Bethesda has blacklisted an outlet like Digital Foundry for doing nothing other than providing the raw statistics and factual numebers concerning their games. Hell, DF has outright PRAISED a number of Bethesda releases and for some games, they've released TONS of content and a great many videos covering the game's appearance across many platforms. In my opinion, it is ridiculous for DF to be excluded from receiving keys for ANY Bethesda titles, ESPECIALLY when they are sending keys to many of these so called "journalists" that insist on making video games a political matter or these review sites that have never given any game a score below about 65.
Sumo Digital understanding that modern kart racers NEED 60fps is the sole reason I'm buying TSR over the CTR remake.
And I loved Crash more than I'll ever love Sonic.

Sonic R was always a better idea than execution. No reason why a new one couldn't be great.
It just shows you how freaking good Nintendo is at optimizing games (Breath of the Wild as the exception) for their system. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe looks pretty similar in design to this game, but runs at 1080p at a locked 60 fps in single player and locked 30 fps in 4 player split-screen. I doubt Team Sonic Racing will get that on the Switch since it's struggling on the base PS4, but we'll see. Sumo should just hand this port over to Panic Button, haha!
Footage is out for Switch version and it looks great honestly. Especially in handheld.

Not really, MK8D is graphically far less impressive - they are VERY careful about how they craft their assets to maintain performance.
A multi-platform game its hard to make those sort of cut-backs as it needs to not look too different from other platforms and also less time/man power to do it.
Why does SEGA ruin everything? Why use Sonic R’s music and logos, feed on nostalgia, and then not deliver an on foot racing style game? They’ve made at least three or more so why force cars on Sonic? This is such a missed opportunity. This comment section is filled with Sonic R lovers.

They really should have focused on performance. MarioKart 8 stays at 60fps on the Wii U and Switch with no dips and it still looks great. MarioKart is king.

This game looks great! The reviews and footage have made it a must get for me along with CTR later this year.
Split screen with ultra wide on PC should be awesome.
The lack of some reviewers only looking at game on the Pro is even a bigger deal as they didn't cover local multiplayer o3o I think they just assumed it ran ok and everything from single player carried over. Local Multiplayer struggling is a big deal for some people.
For those who keep asking why there's not others sega characters in this game, it's because this game ISN'T A DIRECT SEQUEL to Sega All Stars Racing (reason on why doesn't bear thy name) Its the 3rd racing game developed by Sumo Digital, but producer Takashi Izuka said that the team wanted to make a game SOLELY on the Sonic Universe. So take it easy guys, they're not dropping the SASR franchise after all. Game's looks beautifully designed, so enjoy it if you have the chance.
Love Transformed and didn’t really give Team Sonic Racing a proper test. Now that I have all 5 family PCs built I wanted a game all of us could play. Paid $42 for 5 licenses of TSR. Glad I finally have full ultra wide support. No mods needed. Looks great and so far seems to have promise.
It's really impressive to a budget title. I pre-ordered it from Amazon about a year ago for $26., without the Prime 20% off discount it's $32 now. Still budget.

I'm really disappointed Sega and Sumo decided not to keep the Sega All Star theme going with this, I'd have loved to have seen some homages to stuff like Outrun, Daytona USA, After Burner and Panzer Dragoon.
Sega/Sumo aren't dropping the All-Stars Racing franchise. As you can see, this game IS NOT a sequel of SASR, it's a brand new racing game only for the Sonic Universe.

It's re-using several stages from the first two Sonic All Star games, and by the sound of it music as well, the Kart designs look very similar and the item boxes are identical. Aesthetically, it looks just like the first two games - It's clearly meant to be a sequel to Transformed.

This game is gorgeous and all, but MAD PROPS for the Nintendo art team and devs for making Mario Kart 8 look as good as it flipping does w/ a quarter of the hardware...
Yeah, I actually think MK8 is more visually pleasing than this thanks to the stellar art and overall presentation. It also runs at 1080p locked 60fps.
Still though, I like this overall and will get it on PC.
People praise MK8 too much IMO. Its merely the product of a development team who only had to focus on a single platform.
If Sumo Digital had a fraction of the manpower per platform for these ports, they would likely run and look far better than MK8 on Switch.
MK8 was written for the weak WiiU then ported UPWARDS. So it inherently benefits from all the art style cheats they used to run it on the weak hardware of the WiiU. Much much easier than porting it DOWN to the Switch from vastly superior platforms, with less man-power to do so.
Well, usually dev team makes one or two target hardware specs and the porting is done afterwards, not development in parallel. I should have been more clear... This game has more back drop pieces and does look visually richer. MK8 is more bare bonesn in comparison.

@Deku ps4 has no problems running racing games at 60fps, that depends on devs, yeah most ports look great on PS4.
I really love Transformed, if that's coming out too, I'll definitely be getting that one!

Just buy the first game, this looks more of a remaster of that than a proper follow up.
The level of detail in Team Sonic is astounding, however I vastly prefer the contrast and shadows of Transformed.

Interesting. So PS4 Pro at 1080p is the way to go. I'm definitely curious how it performs on Switch and Xbox One X.
I have it on the One X and have played most tracks multiple times. It's mostly stable with drops on occasion while a lots going on (I imagine similar to the Pro version dips in the video). However, one or two track just run terribly with constant drops that affect gameplay. Bit of a shame as i can't just drop it to 1080p.
It looks beautiful and sharp though. No idea what the res it, but there's very little alaising. Shadow quality is pretty average like with the Pro.
I don't mean to be rude, but...okay. *read that last part and imagine i'm backing away from you slowly on account of the weird stuff you're saying*
What even is the point of a double buffer vsync? All it does, as far as I could ever tell, is takes a typically good thing... like vsync, and shits all over it. Where any other would simply drop a frame, then catch back up... that single frame drop causes a double buffer scenario to attempt to lock 30 in that moment, dropping so hard so fast that it's similar to that of the power going out and back on. There's just this egregious, noticeable, destructive break in movement, momentum, smoothness, etc. It's the absolute worst way to do it from what I could EVER tell. I get that in a perfect world, that drop in performance would then lock multiple of the refresh rate, hence the attempt to dump all the way to 30... but if the dev's see that factually speaking, the game only ever tends to very momentarily drop a frame or so, why tell the programming to attempt a 30 lock? As there is simply not enough time at the reduced performance to even justify such a choice.
Finally a good game on DigitalFoundry. Hope to see Rage 2 next.

Thankfully the first 2 games run very well on PC and scale very nicely to 4K and of course the only way to get 60fps on them.

They talked about the console versions, so probably thag one, especially since they are playing the console versions.
It's free right now on PS Plus. I'm using my PS4 PRO and hardly noticed any drops. Looks quite smooth actually.

Hey Digital Foundry. Can you check the grapical downgrade in Red Dead Redemption 2? In 1.00 patch the lighting in Valentine General Store looks better than in 1.09 patch. And im not sure the Ambient Occlusion and textures are back in the original quality, like in the 1.00 patch.
Can't wait to run this on Linux with the new version of proton Steam just rolled out.

All it really needs is an Xbox One X enhancement patch, as it still looks amazing today on PC. Of course the drag is the PS4 can't get that enhancement.

I came here to check the Ps4 and Pro difference =b GameXplain made a "Switch Vs. Ps4" comparison and only showed it running on Ps4, which boosts the performance. A lot of people think that it runs at a constant 60fps on PS4 in general cause of that video, but as shown that isn't necessarily the case on base models.

Is this the 1st 2160p60 TH-cam upload that Digital Foundry has posted? I religiously watch every Digital Foundry video and this is the 1st one I've seen that went above 1080p (on TH-cam of course). Is this going to be the new normal or is this just a test-run of sorts?

Constant massive frame rate dips and stutters.
It’s the main reason I purchased it and it makes it really hard to enjoy. Single player is smooth enough.
Wish I’d grabbed this on the One X instead. I didn’t even think twice because it doesn’t look like it should be overly taxing on either PS4 or Xbox.
Here’s hoping they can fix it with some patches because it’s a fun game besides that.

Nice to see a good sonic game coming out, performance is definitely a concern however I do think that will be improved over time ( especially if they adding DLC). Seeing how much it struggles with base PS4 pretty concerned with the switch version but anyways seems like Xbox one x or
PS4 pro seems like the definitive version ( besides PC).
And it has no DLC.

it will be a fun game, but i'm thankfull to SEGA for being able to play on one X the first all star racing and the transformed which is the best , this one seems to be a bit of a stepback in order to make a second game with transformed in it with boats and plane, just for the music i'll take it, when i heard the music of Sonic R on saturn , this bring me so much nostalgia .
This wasn't the indepth analysis as usual, more like your personal opinion and first impression. And I like it! Wish you would do this sort light review more often.

F-Zero GX was (probably still is) one of the fastest racers ever on a console and it had 30 AI opponents with a rock-solid 60fps refresh. It was some amazing coding by the folks at Sega.

I've played racing transformed to death, TSR is SO. GOOD. the characters, (oh.. besides charmy ;-;) THE MUSIC, Jun Senoue and rest at Sega sound team just keep coming with hits. Amazing remixes of old VGM. that Sand Hill remix tho 👀 awesome game but the switch port is garbage bc 30fps. I hope rumors about a switch pro are true, because it's 2019 playing a racing game at 25-30 fps feels like shit. Voice acting is also pretty great as always
