Yo have me obsessed with stencils now! So fun!
Could you have started with colored cardstock and put white ink on the parts that you wanted to be a lighter color? Then you could put the lighter ink over the white ink. Of course, you would have to wait until the white ink dries, but that would not be a problem if you were making many backgrounds at one time.
