How the Gabriel Fernandez doc did not make this list is shocking. I had to force myself through it but it’s truly an important and soul crushing film about child abuse.
As someone who regards the orca as her favorite animal, Blackfish was a HARD documentary to watch. The largest species of dolphin on Earth doesn't belong in a swimming pool.

You don’t need to be a mother…. I don’t have kids and I couldn’t get through it. It’s the only docuseries I wasn’t able to finish, and not for lack of trying.
I could go thru two more divorces without shedding a tear, but when I see animals hurt by us as humans, it hits me hard and deep. Makes me ashamed to be part of us monsters. Messing with harmless animals who just want to survive by instinct just is so low and cowardly.
It’s human nature in some, prey on the weak or less intelligent, for personal gain or sadistic pleasure of feeling like you are god or something It’s sickening and as you said, cowardly.
Where were you able to find the documentary? I have watched it two or three times over the last ten years, but last year, I wanted to watch it again but can't find it anywhere
The woman that was never there was also very good to watch. It was about a lady that lied about surviving 9/11 and was the face of 9/11 ptsd trauma. Also the mini series about worst places to go to school about kids risking everything for an education.
Those people are pathetic. The school bus lady who got $800,000 from GoFundMe and kept it all. That needs to stop. I don't even tell people about my low level PTSD, they just roll their eyes so what's the point?
Didn’t even know about that, I knew there was a comedian who’d gone on Marc Maron and various platforms saying he was in one of the towers on 9/11, but years later he admitted it was a lie. I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure he only admitted it after people started calling him on it

Given how many times I've been thanked by people on these messageboards for doing this, I'd say you're the one in the minority on this issue.

I would not call that countdown in particular trustworthy.
I’m so sad everytime I watch a video of top hardest documentaries to watch and NONE of them mention the Trails of Gabriel Fernandez. As some one who has watched many documentaries in all genres, that was the hardest one to watch. I had to pause many times to collect myself and keep watching. The anger and sadness I felt after watching that lingered for a while
There is one that should be on the list Roger and Me... when General Motors closed down and thousands of people in Detroit lose their jobs.. Detroit ever since then was struggling. The ending where you see the CEO celebrating the holidays with his family and friends and having this Christmas party.. the scenes switches back and forth to ex workers of the plant being evicted from their homes ..in the cold.. and it was many who were being evicted.. I was pissed off, angry, smh 😤
For us non-Americans 9/11 is mostly of interest only due to the big political changes it brought to the western world. There is pre and post 9/11 because of it. I of course understand it is a terrible moment in history for people in North America, but it's not emotional and "hard to watch" for the rest of the world. Not harder than any other documentary of a single terror attack. For Scandinavians stories of mass murderer/terrorist Anders Behring Breivik who killed 77 people (mostly teens and young adults) and hurt 315 others, in 2011 due to his political views is a bit more triggering. It hits close to home.
The ending of "Senna" is heartbreaking as you become so attached to a man full of life, his funeral procession and the music accompanying his loved ones viewing his coffin gets me everytime
The theory of the family on The Imposter having something to do with the disappearance of the boy, and thus couldn't just come out and say they knew it wasn't him intrigues me.
06:30 Yep, nothing as dangerous as blind faith and blind devotion. Never stop questioning things or put all your faith into one thing; you'll end up depending on it.
Waltz with Bashir just had me at the edge of my seat and then I slumped back into it and pretty much froze at the end of it because it just hit me so hard how horrific the Lebanese War was. Any of the documentaries that deal with animal cruelty, I just turn away immediately because, as an animal lover, I just can't stand seeing such innocent creatures in pain. 😢
The GG Allin documentary directed by Todd Phillips, called "Hated," is pretty intense to watch. Given that it was made RIGHT before GG died, makes it even heavier to experience. The footage of his concerts, the people being interviewed, Todd himself narrating, the grimy late 80s/early 90s film quality. It's a nearly perfect low budget no frills documentary
The Bridge is a devastating and emotionally draining movie... the few that survived said that the second they jumped, they regretted it. The ending, after following one man through the movie, is a swan dive backwards to the water... brutal
Waltz With Bashir deserved more nominations like Best Original Song Good Morning Lebanon, Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture
I forget the name of the documentary but there was one I saw when I was in college where they talked about the us legal system and people with disabilities, especially mental disabilities. They showed how many people with mental disabilities are lied to and coerced into admitting to crimes they had nothing to do with. There was one where the cops told a guy during interrogation if he signed a paper saying he committed a murder he would get to go home. He signed it and they arrested him. In many areas in the past they did this when they were under pressure to close a case. They would just find someone with mental impairments (especially if it was known that the people in the neighborhood were intolerant toward them), pull the old “you fit the description” line, and deceive them into signing a false confession. That way the case was closed, the pressure was off them, the public was satisfied because a perpetrator was in jail, and the cop may even get a commendation. They didn’t care they put a severely impaired person in prison wrongfully. It’s not like the person could be a “valuable member of society”.
The list includes.. Restrepo Dear Zachary Blackfish Jesus camp S21:KhmerRouge killing machine The ivory game The jonestown doc Silverlake life:the view from here Waltz with Bashir The imposter The earthlings Grizzly man Shoah 13th Tarnation Titicut follies Capturing the friedmans Paradise lost: Robin hood hills The bridge The act of killing
Willy has been dead for a long time. By the time they freed him it was too late, he had depended on humans for food his entire life and had no idea what to do in the ocean.
I don't remember the name of this documentary, but I watched it when I was taking a class based around disabilities in college. It was very similar to the listing #7 you had in your video, but it covered a mental hospital that basically served to deprive its patients of any rights they had or could have had, as many of the people inside were children who were barely fed or clothed. It was really hard for us to watch, and some of the other students in the class with me had to leave because of how graphic it was.
Blackfish haunted me. I signed so many petitions afterwards. I will never give SeaWorld a dime of my money. RIP Lolita. The Bridge was incredibly hard to watch. Seeing so many people jump off the Golden Gate Bridge was so sad. Dear Zachary is the saddest film I have ever seen. It was senseless and preventable. So so awful.
It’s pretty interesting in retrospect because while I’m sure they make money still, to my knowledge that documentary pretty much single-handedly ruined most people’s perception of sea world. I know it did for me, I went there once as a little kid way before that shit was revealed and I hardly even remember it but I remember enjoying myself, but obviously I like you and probably most people, haven’t considered giving them a dime once since finding out the truth
Letter to Zachary had me in a puddle for about a half hour. Every time I see a picture or hear about it it still breaks my heart. This doc is not listed but pictures of grandparents are shown in introduction.
I Watched Titicut Follies On PBS. Shocking & Horrifying Documentary. Been Going To SeaWorld San Diego Since The Seventies. Always Enjoyed Watching Killler Whales Shows Until The Trainers Were Banned From Going Into The Water. I Wondered Why The Dorsal Fin Was Bent Now I Know Why. Did Not Think I Would Like BlackFish. Eye Opening & Learned Alot About The Abuse Of KillerWhales By SeaWorld.
I think "They shall not grow old" had to be in this list, it's from the Somme battle and it ONLY contains real images, so the corpses, explosions, etc. are real.
I'm very surprised "Just, Melvin: Just Evil" isn't on this list. It was the most upsetting documentary I've ever seen. It made me physically sick and wasn't to curl up in a ball and cry in the shower...
Earthlings and its inofficial 2018 sequel Dominion are arguably the most relevant and should be mandatory watch, as we all are paying for and creating that hell for innocent animals every single day (except vegans)...
Omo child is probably the roughest documentary I’ve ever seen. Modern day ritual sacrifice of babies. I don’t think it gets tougher than that. Can’t believe it’s not on this list. Devil came on horseback, I’d another tough watch. I’ve seen most of these documentaries and both I’ve named deserve a spot.
I do not believe it is "ritual sacrifice of babies." They believe some children will curse the village so they murder them. Obviously this is still horrific, but there is a difference.
I’ve seen probably 6 or 7 in this list and the ones that stand out are Waltz with Bashir, The Bridge and Dear Zachary. Dear Zachary was an absolute punch to the throat after a punch to the gut. By the end I was angry, tearful, almost speechless. I cannot bring myself to watch Blackfish or Earthlings.
“Last Man in Aleppo”, about a group of “White Helmets” working in Syria during the civil war (still going). There were no more rescue teams and disaster relief workers helping people in areas that were being consistently shelled- foreign aid agencies were being kept away and existing civil organizations had ceased to exist. But there are still people going out and trying to help people, aiding evacuations and other emergency movements, rescue work when necessary, and they tend to wear white helmets when they have them. Taking on that role in many areas is an assured death sentence, but they do know that when they die they will have helped others to survive. Fragments of families living in rubble- it’s unreal. The military (I don’t remember which one, but it didn’t matter anymore) was directly targeting civilians; a few hospitals were taken out. There is one man who is sort of set up as the protagonist, but only so far that the documentary makers have someone to follow. He doesn’t make it to the end of the film, of course, but he was “the last man in Aleppo”- as are all the people who stay in these places for the sake of civilians who can’t leave for whatever reason. I’ve managed it twice, bawled my eyes out both times.
Get a grip Tina, how old are you? Your life is so bad we all need to hear the story? Call us back in 50 years. Maybe think about changing your user name too.
Damien Echols was sentenced to death not life like Jason & Jesse. They were released due to an Alford Plea as the Arkansas State Supreme Court had declared they had the right to a new trial. The state to keep from having to pay for a new trial & knowing the WM3 would be found innocent & then be allowed to sue the state for unlawful imprisonment which would be millions of dollars each, instead offered them the plea to save face & allow the men to walk free right then. Jason did NOT want to except but knew it was the only way he could help get Damian off death row.
I think what made Jonestown so horrible was the fact these absolutely evil “parents” were so genuinely brain dead, they murdered their innocent children and made them die painfully, all bc they were gullible and naive enough to think they were going to some heaven. If it was just the people who drank it themselves it would be sad but self inflicted, the fact the people who didn’t wanna do it got shot, and the countless children who had no wish to be there, is unforgivable. I have to imagine all of them knew in their last moments this wasn’t a path to paradise. Watching their children, their friends and loved ones violently choke and die, while anyone who refuses to drink gets shot down. It’s hard to think they’d be able to think “oh this is what we’ve been waiting for, we’re going to a more beautiful existence” then their last moments were spent in fear, pain and agony. I think it makes me so angry because it isn’t some thing of the past, my cousin was in a cult for about 20 years. Now he’s been out of it for probably just as long, he has two daughters that must be in high school now, and a wife and happy life and successful job. It can happen to almost anyone it seems
Kartik was still missing Priya so much. Priya was his girlfriend who died in a car accident before 4 years. But kartik was also suffering from some job frustations. So he was thinking that if Priya was there. Then she could be able to support kartik. One day kartik was on his bike trip. Suddenly he saw a very shining and lightning thing at some distance. He went there. He saw that it is actually a stone. May be of some gold or any other precious metal. Kartik brought it to home and slept. In next morning in light when stone stopped shining too much. Then kartik saw that something is written on that stone. On stone it was written that ask any wish from that stone. It was a magical stone. But it can be used only once. Kartik asked a wish for his girlfriend comeback. And after it text written on the stone disappeared. Kartik went market to sell this stone. But when he came back to home. He shocked. He saw Priya was there. So stone was really magical. He was so happy after it. He spent a so long time with Priya then. Next day a letter came to kartik home from an unknown address. In letter it was written. What you have done. You will have to pay for it. Because you broke the laws of nature. So it will bring dangerous consequences with it. Kartik felt like it is a case of some divine supernatural powers. He said loudly what I did and who you are. Are you God. If yes. Then plz tell me what is going to happen next. Priya made kartik calmed. She said kartik for not much worrying about it. She said let see what will happen. When kartik was sleeping. Then he heard a knock on door. He saw a man who was wearing black clothes like eskimos and in darkness kartik was not able to see the face of that man. It was looking like that man has no face at all or his face was hidden under the fully covered cap of his Eskimo kind of black jacket. Kartik asked that man who you are and what do you want. The man said you got the letter. Kartik said you sent that. Are you any kind of divine supernatural being. The man said i am from a illuminati. I am from a another realm. A realm from where illuminati keep eyes on humans. Sometimes we send such kinds of stones to test humans. Sometimes it bring good results. When humans ask for wealth and health or things like that. But for what you asked for. It was not good. It broke the laws of nature. Now you have to pay for it. Kartik asked what do I have to pay. Illuminati man pressed the mid point between the eyebrows of kartik and kartik saw a horrible future. He saw Priya was going to soon completely handicapped physically and mentally by an another accident. Kartik shouted loudly no it can not happen. Illuminati man said it will happen. And will happen because of you. Soon kartik opened his eyes. And found that all was dream. He talked about it to Priya. He said to Priya that we will go to temple for praying it. In temple they both went and cried a lot. In tonight dream kartik meet again with this illuminati member. Illuminati member said to kartik that one thing can be done. Kartik asked what. Illuminati member said to kartik that after completing wish if someone the stone soul goes to an another realm. If you can bring that soul to us. Then I will give you an another chance. Let see if you can do this job or not. Kartik said ok send me into this realm. I will try to find soul of stone which fulfilled my wish. Illuminati member sent kartik to this soul realm by a portal. A guard there said to kartik here are so many souls of so many stones. How will you find your one. Kartik said i will try. Guard opened the gate of stone soul world. Kartik saw all souls were looking same. He thought that now he has to surrender. But suddenly an idea came to his mind. He thought that how illuminati bring souls in new stones. May be most of the time they bring older souls to new stones. He said loudly that i am new secret member of illuminati. The stone fulfilled my wish. Plz that's soul came to me. Otherwise illuminati senior members will come and they will trap you and lock you into a useless stone for long years. Kartik thought may be fear will work. After sometimes a soul came to him and said welcome to membership of illuminati. I am ready to go with you. Plz never lock me sir. Kartik was happy that he found that soul. Kartik went again to member of illuminati through portal. Kartik told all story to illuminati member. Illuminati member said to kartik that he is so good. Illuminati member said i am sending you to that time again where you found that stone. You will find that stone again and now you can again ask for a wish. But it should not be about Priya. Kartik said ok. Kartik went to that place by an another portal. He went towards the stone and asked a strange wish. He asked that the thing which makes him feel so much happy, rich and alive. That thing should be always with him in very good way. And after it kartik opened his eyes in morning. Actually this wish was about Priya. Because the thing which makes kartik alive, rich in mind and so much happy. It was all Priya. So kartik played a clever game. So kartik was happy with priya. But in noon he got an another letter. In letter it was written nice game you played kartik. You can think you chased us. Because you saved yourself from breaking the laws of nature by your clever act. But still you have to face consequences. Something strange will come to you soon. Kartik was tense all the day about what will happen next. In next day morning when his doorbell rang. Then he shocked. Because on door it was kartik mother. Who actually died in kartik childhood. Kartik shocked and then smiled. Because he understood the message of illuminati. because he asked the wish for the thing which gave him most happy and rich feeling. It was also about his mother too with his girlfriend. So his mother also came back to life. And that all was positive consequence. So kartik was so glad that he brought two persons back in his life by his clever mind.

Some notable omissions: Free Solo - good movie but extremely hard to watch if you have Acrophobia. Deliver Us from Evil - especially the scenes of Father O'Grady walking around the playground. Emma Wants to Live - to watch Emma's decline in health will destroy you. Zoo - some alternate titles include Horsing Around, 1 Guy 1 Horse and The Horse Whisperer: Special Victims Unit.
Racing Extinction was super tough on me to watch. A must see. Nature and animal lovers should have tissues readily available....and maybe a punching bag..
Hardest documentary i ever watched? An autopsy. They sawed the 'Y'-shaped top of the torso to get to the vital organs, and then sawed open the scalp and removed the brain. I was ready to do the technicolor yawn! I was about to toss my cookies! I was about to lose my lunch! 🤮
Same title you guys have pretty much ran before, but with a few new entries. Rather it's "hard to watch" or "most controversial.". But I'll still watch em. I guess the ones replaced aren't as hard to watch this time.
I heard about that documentary, and I immediately said, "Nope!". I even hugged my precious kitty, who passed away from old age 2 years ago, because he meant so much to me. Also, I'm an animal lover in general, so I would never bring myself to watch these types of documentaries because it physically hurts me to see animals being treated so cruelly.😢
The Act of Killing was based upon families of victims of the PKI purges. The PKI purges happened after the September 30 Movement coup, which killed several senior Indonesian Army officers by the G30S pr the September 30 Movement, a Leftist military group, which PKI explicitly supported. After the incident, Suharto took over Sukarno's weak leadership, and blamed the PKI on the coup. The mass killings were sad and horrible. Some tried to fight back, forming armed rebel groups. But most accepted the fate, dying at the hands of their captors. Almost all Indonesian Commies abroad don't return home. The most affected PKI membership were from the mainline PKI, Gerwani aka the PKI women's league (which was according to stories, tortured the surviving of the 7 officers, castrating and slowly killing them while doing radical feminism), Chinese Indonesians, ethnic people suspected of supporting PKI and most of all, Atheists. Some were lucky not to be killed, but cursed in all of their lives that they were the curse of Indonesia.

Moreover, where I've done this a lot before, I have gotten multiple likes and thanks for doing this from viewers who want these countdown channels to post the list in chapters in the description.
Given how many times I've been thanked by people on these messageboards for doing this, I'd say you're the one in the minority on this issue.
@@mikememine1423 Moreover, while I do enjoy Watch Mojo videos, it is a corporate shill channel.
They posted a countdown of the most influential moments in music history and named Queen's performance at Live Aid as #1 right when the movie about Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, opened in theaters.
I would not call that countdown in particular trustworthy.

I’ve had friends that saw the cove and said that it was heartbreaking and extremely hard to watch. I still can’t bring myself to watch it.
I’m so sad everytime I watch a video of top hardest documentaries to watch and NONE of them mention the Trails of Gabriel Fernandez. As some one who has watched many documentaries in all genres, that was the hardest one to watch. I had to pause many times to collect myself and keep watching. The anger and sadness I felt after watching that lingered for a while
Dear Zachary was an experience I’ll never be able to forget it. Zachary and A drew deserved so much better than what happened.
Or Flint.
@@gmamah9559 definitely Flint
Animal cruelty...can't watch those things, it gets me super agressive and makes me wanna cry....
And not a single 9/11 documentary. Good for you guys for not resorting to an easy choice on a tough subject matter list
I couldn't watch these documentaries because they always make me cry and it's so heartbreaking 🥺
Cry? What the hell they are comedies tho what are u smokin theyre hilarity to the rest of the world
The ending of "Senna" is heartbreaking as you become so attached to a man full of life, his funeral procession and the music accompanying his loved ones viewing his coffin gets me everytime
Thank you for including “Follies”. I was a Psych Nurse in Northampton, MA in the 60’s. Bridgewater was only marginally better by then
With all due respect, I have the stomach to watch human struggles but I draw the line at animal poaching documentaries.
Agreed.
Agreed.
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is absolutely devastating for so many reasons. I almost stopped watching it several times.
It's a nearly perfect low budget no frills documentary
dear zachary broke my heart to pieces man i was not expecting that
I’m surprised The trials of Gabriel Fernandez isn’t on here .. so sad
Oh man I was in shambles watching that one.
And that poor ER nurse breaking down, whom you would think has seen everything, was heartbreaking@@reynaolvera7526
The Bridge is a devastating and emotionally draining movie... the few that survived said that the second they jumped, they regretted it. The ending, after following one man through the movie, is a swan dive backwards to the water... brutal
The Bridge only has one survivor. Everyone else, who jumped, died in this film.
I am surprised that The Cove wasn’t on this list except for a mere mention in another doc on this list
It's a big secret even outside the village.
Dear Zachary just killed me. I hope there is a hell for her after what she did. Poor sweet child 😢
I had watched both Jonestown and Blackfish, both were very well put together and had me on edge
How could the family even think for a second that this dude was their son?! For Heaven sake, English was clearly not his first language.
Waltz With Bashir deserved more nominations like Best Original Song Good Morning Lebanon, Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture
When the bridge one was #2 you knew #1 was going be a tough one.

Plea deals are a joke. Next is settling for an "undisclosed" amount, why is it such a big secret?

Surprised that the docu "dont fuck with cats" isn't on here, that shit haunts me
I adored the film Free Willy and its message as a kid … watching Black-fish wrecked me
Willy has been dead for a long time. By the time they freed him it was too late, he had depended on humans for food his entire life and had no idea what to do in the ocean.
Sharkwater Extinction was a hard one for me. The filmmaker behind it ended up losing his life due to a diving accident during filming.
Whenever I watch Blackfish or The Ivory Game, I think of a quote from The Hunchback of Notre Dame,
“What makes a monster, and what makes a man?”
I needed therapy.
It's number 6 on this list. 😅
It’s an absolute gut punch
I Watched Titicut Follies On PBS. Shocking & Horrifying Documentary. Been Going To SeaWorld San Diego Since The Seventies. Always Enjoyed Watching Killler Whales Shows Until The Trainers Were Banned From Going Into The Water. I Wondered Why The Dorsal Fin Was Bent Now I Know Why. Did Not Think I Would Like BlackFish. Eye Opening & Learned Alot About The Abuse Of KillerWhales By SeaWorld.
What about There’s Something Wrong with Aunt Diane? That and Dear Zachary and sad and infuriating to watch.
I think "They shall not grow old" had to be in this list, it's from the Somme battle and it ONLY contains real images, so the corpses, explosions, etc. are real.
@mickie_fartedunrespectful POS!
Yes this film was devestating and showed the insanity of the power of a few over so many.
Thank you for these suggestions.
The act of killing is the hardest...
U mean thw funniest?
Dope sick love is extremely hard to watch.
Just wait until they make a documentary about my life, my goodness, you won't be able to finish it.
It would be hilarious im sure
Netflix's The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is by far the hardest documentary I've ever watched.
77 minutes is truly heart breaking
Surely one about Jonestown has to be on here

Watching the Kalief Browder doc sent me into a Major Depressive state for 3 months. Sad that his story didn't get much recognition when he was alive or even in the end.
Black fish is heartbreaking and horrifying. The Indonesian massacre I stopped watching half way through, it was just too much carnage.
