Nova Collective performs "Dancing Machines" from their debut album "The Further Side." The audio is the actual live performance audio from this session.

Nova Collective began in 2014 when bassist Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me, Trioscapes) and guitarist Richard Henshall (Haken) began exchanging emails about music; before long, a few demos were fleshed out into full arrangements. Drummer Matt Lynch (Trioscapes, Cynic) and keyboardist Pete Jones (ex-Haken) came on board shortly after to finish writing the album. The Further Side was written on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, with Briggs and Lynch in America and Henshall and Jones in England, sharing session files until the group could get together at the beginning of 2015 to record with engineer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist). Mixed by Rich Mouser (Neal Morse, Transatlantic), it is immediately clear that The Further Side is a labor of love for all involved, and that enthusiasm shines throughout.

Nobody particulary needs vocals (hopefully), but since Richard Henshall pulled off some fucking amazing vocal stuff on the mountain (don't know how much Ross contributed to the arrangement) and Affinity was pretty lacking in that department, I wouldn't be mad about, if there weresome sweet vocals. It's amazing neither the less.

Kein Name true that, Henshall writes some awesome vocal melodies, mostly in The Mountain and Aquarius, and I agree with you Affinty is not the best in vocal melodies, except in The Architect, the vocals are one of Haken's best, so as the song itself IMO
I talked with Richard after a show in Bonn, Germany. he told me he pretty much wrote all of Aquarius, Visions and The Mountain

As an old timer, I can definitely hear the influences of: Yes, Zappa , mahavishnu orchestra, Patrick Moraz and of course the bass lines , Jaco Pastorius. My son recommended this band, and Im hooked! love it!

They broght all of the good monotonic parts from all of those bands as well as Gentel Giant(how could you forget?!); And made this masterpeace of an album
I envy of your son. Mine is not so bad though. Still in hard rock heavy stuff, but at his age 23 I was a big Rush Yes Kansas Gentle Giant etc fan. Maybe later. I started all with him anyway.

I need more Nova Collective; Dan and Rich’s writing styles compliment each other so well.
Dan is literally the best bassist to ever live and I feel like he get overlooked by so many. Excellent musician.
And just like that, the band is 50% Haken. Loved what Diego Tejeida did for Haken, and excited to hear what Pete will bring to the table. Judging by this most fans won't be disappointed.
I love Henshall, man. He and Steven Wilson are my favorites composers! Such a talented man!

I've recorded at that studio twice now and I have to say that Kris (the guy who runs the studio) is a studio wizard. Amazing place. I suggest that anybody looking for a place to record check out Legitimate Business studio.
Trioscape ever did session in this studio before if I don't get wrong. Now we got new Jazz-metal band, great!

I understand the objection to this. It's lifeless. Scant melody. It's a musical magic act. Same (and only) gripe I've had with some of Dream Theater's material. But it certainly showcases their chops, which is likely the point. How often would I casually listen to it? Never, won't be buying it. As great as the playing is.
Oh, and I dig haken and btbam.
In the description I first read "...before long, a few DEMONS were fleshed out into full arrangements." and I was like "HOLY SHIT, THAT MAKES SENSE" 'till I read it again

Sounds like they put all jazzy parts of Dream Theater in one song and developed it further. I guess the guitarist has got a John Petrucci Poster over his bed :-). But I must say they do an amazing Job. I must check out more of thier music. Great Job Guys!!!
It's the guitarist from Haken, he obviously is influenced by Petrucci.
You can hear Henshall chasing a little bit more of what he was experimenting on the albums Aquarius and Visions by Haken. But you also hear quite a bit of Dan's influence.

@@hewystudio7832 Liquid Tension Experiment. It's John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Tony Levin and Jordan Rudess. Great instrumental prog. They put out two albums back to back about 20 years ago and put out another album about a year ago.
