I don't understand a word of Russian, but this performance is so moving and memorable. The tragedy and tenderness comes through vividly. I've never heard it equaled by anyone.

Such elegance and ease of the voice and absolute outstanding squillo for days!!! This is an extraordinary example of great singing, and with not unnecessary pressure or forcing of the voice.
Our modern tenors cant do pianissimo or cover such a vast tonal/dynamic palette like this. There is so much more beauty revealed in this music when interpreted by a past master like Yemeshev.
This singer has a beautiful and impressive dynamic range. But others can do the aria full justice today. Listen to Pavol Breslik, Benjamin Bernheim, Bogdan Volkov.
Thank you for uploading this video. I've never heard anything like it in fifty years of listening to opera. Nobody but nobody can sing like this today. The placement of the voice, the timbre, legato, portamento, diminuendos, and the fabulous squillo. The true art of bel canto. And all put to the service of Tchaikovsky's genius. I am stunned.
If you like Lemeshev, you'd probably enjoy his rendition of Duke in Rigoletto. IMO the best ever not only vocally, but in general ,the portraying of the character. In this video it's sung in Russian. th-cam.com/video/TbuHuhiXVZA/w-d-xo.html
There is a 1956 recording of the full opera from the Bolshoi with Boris Khaikin conducting, and an older 1936 recording from the Bolshoi with Vasiliy Nebolsin conducting.
The greatest Russian tenor of all time, or perhaps second only to Leonid Sobinov. I discovered him a few years ago, after my teacher mentioned him to me. Thank you for this video. Greetings from Greece.

Extraordinary technique and musicality. The clinical precision of a trained machine and a furnace of emotion. The musician's life... And the paradox of artistry
What stunning beauty, elegance and grace by Sergei Lemeshev. Amazing breath control. I wonder aloud who was Tchaikovsky's first Lensky? Anyone know? My favorite tenor, Jussi Bjoerling did this aria too, but he flubbed it big time by singing it in Swedish? Why in heaven's name?? Jussi was so precise about details and about his going's on's, diction etc and so versatile. Surely he could've sung the Russian version? Be that as it may, anyway, he sang it very nicely in Swedish (a difficult language for starters as is the Cerelic language of Russian). Bjoerling sang Lensky's Aria with his normal brilliant Bjoerling silvery sheen. Spanish tenor Placido Domingo did it nicely too and in excellent sounding Russian and beautifully executed too. Much thanks for posting this clip GregNichols1953.
You're quite welcome! I'm a big Bjoerling fan too, but Lemeshev's Lensky is ravishing. From the Wikipedia page: Tchaikovsky worried whether the public would accept Eugene Onegin, which lacked traditional scene changes. He believed that its performance required maximum simplicity and sincerity. With this in mind, he entrusted the first production to the students of the Moscow Conservatory. The premiere took place on 29 March (17 March O.S.) 1879 at the Maly Theatre, Moscow, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein, with set designs by Karl Valts (Waltz). The first Lensky tenor was one Mikhail Medvedyev, of whom very little is known. Not to be confused with the Russian actor of the same name.
I heard that Stalin loves this one. Once someone asked him to sing a "revolutionary song" for Stalin, Stalin said: "Don't bother; just let him sing Eugene Onegin." It's from another age that would NEVER come back again. Sad... BTW, if he can do this with one lung, I wonder what he can do with 2.
He had two lungs here in 1936. His lung problems started during World War II on the "Eastern Front" - (from Wikipedia): "during one evacuation he caught a very bad cold which resulted in two attacks of pneumonia, complicated by pleurisy and tuberculosis of the right lung. He was treated with artificial pneumothorax, which induced the therapeutic collapse of one lung. Although singing was forbidden, he adapted by being more conscious and sensitive with regard to his technique, and continued to sing with one lung from 1942 to 1948, when the other lung was also artificially collapsed and re-inflated. During that period he recorded Lakme, The Snow Maiden, Les pêcheurs de perles, Mozart and Salieri and pieces from operas like The Barber of Seville and Rigoletto."

Bravo bravo bravo brilliance fantastic grandiose genial vocal super
Not just a fabulous and totally genuine bel canto but an exquisite stage presence. Probably my favourite single piece of singing.
Unbelievably beautiful.

An amazing singer! And the greatest Lensky of all. By a mile.
Lemeshev is all what is right about singing, and the epitome of beauty. And this is probably the best example of his value.
Never heard of him, but this is probably one of the greatest pieces of singing ever

His high notes are insanely resonant. Probably the most resonant high notes I’ve ever heard from a tenor.
