    my question is how do you get your foot in industry field if you have been a traditional pharmacist? Is industry as saturated? what do you need to do to make a change in your career to industry?

    • @FocusRx
      @FocusRx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Getting your foot in the door into a new industry, regardless of your background, is always a little challenging. My advice is to network with individuals in the pharma industry/in roles in which you'd like to see yourself to truly understand the work, roles, departments, etc. and highlight your skills in the correct way. Your work experience (even if it's not in industry) is worth a lot - you just have to position it in a way to fit the skills they are looking for in roles within the industry that you're targeting.

  • @niecytorvend9729
    @niecytorvend9729 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So question: I am able to apply to Pharmacy school next year but the job market frightens me. I like all branches of pharmacy (compounding, clinical, retail) and have been exposed to all 3 during work as a pharm. tech and scribe. I live in Alaska and so many pharmacists are flocking here for jobs, but even not enough jobs are available here.
    I like lab work and R&D and I could see myself in the industry as a developer. But here’s the problem: my husband becomes an Air Force officer soon, and I want to be able to have a family and travel. I love school but I want to be done with it so I can have kids and a family.
    I was thinking of doing PharmD even though I had no intention of doing clinical pharm as a RPH because I want to be a medical writer and stay at home with my kids. Would that be a good idea? Because my poor pharmacist coworkers are saying I should just go to a masters program. But will that require another 4 years for the PhD?
    I’d love your input!

    • @FocusRx
      @FocusRx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think with pharmacy school -- it's honestly best if you can gear up and be ready for what you want to do after graduation. That way you can really gear your experiences during school towards that and right now there's definitely many avenues pharmacists can go down.
      If your end goal is solely medical writer though, I'm not sure if PharmD is the best and right way to get there. I think there should be more of a reason for you to pursue a PharmD, again, other than the end goal being a medical writer. If medical writer is the end goal, I think you can definitely get there without a PharmD. Do higher science degrees (MD, PhD, PharmD) help in being a medical writer? yes. Are they necessary? I dont think so. I think you can still get there with a general BS in science or background science knowledge and experience. Just really depends how you carve your story and the experiences you're able to get!
      Good luck!

    Hi! Are you allowed to use the title of Dr if you are in receipt of a PharmD degree? It may be different since I’m In Canada but I’m just curious. I’m currently doing a Bsc in Chemistry to get my pre reqs since there were no direct from high school programs up here, very excited to get into it. We’re you required to do research projects and or a thesis for your degree? I can definitely do it but one of the reasons I want study PharmD and not pharmacology is because I want to be a community pharmacist rather than work in a lab and study pharmacology as it’s not a huge interest of mine to do research and the like

    • @FocusRx
      @FocusRx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! That’s awesome. Yes, the Dr title is utilized for those who have a PharmD degree. That’s amazing you know what you want to do. Like youve stayed, to be a community pharmacist you do have to do a PharmD so good on you for knowing what you want and pursuing it!’

    Thank you so much! That was a great insight. I just finished my degree and wondering if it’s a good idea to jump straight into a pharmaceutical company? will I lack clinical knowledge as I won’t have any exposure with patients? Or do you recommend finding a part time in community? I’m really lost as I have to start my intern within a month, and there might be an opportunity at a pharmaceutical company. Thank you :))

    • @FocusRx
      @FocusRx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      congratulations on graduating! cheers to class of 2020.
      in terms of jumping into the pharmaceutical industry, it really depends on what you want to do. If you want to work in a clinical setting, then of course clinical knowledge is key. if you don't foresee yourself working in any clinical realm, and want to pursue a wholistic career within the pharma industry (like myself), then it's not a bad idea at all to jump right in. again -- align it with your priorities.
      retail, industry, and clinical pharmacy are three very different realms and i would say it's the best if you really decide a path to go down and then in the future you can always switch (it's challenging since it's almost like starting from scratch but it's also doable and people do it all the time!)

    • @FocusRx

      You can't really look at salaries at such a broad scale --- each role each department and each company vary, and then of course each country. Requirements for jobs within the pharma industry are usually listed in the job description but usually a higher scientific degree, appropriate experience, and then of course all the relevant soft skills!

      Thanks for the support -- I appreciate it!
      Apply to summer internships -- as many as you can. If you get denied, it's okay. Just keep trying. I didn't get one the first year I applied but got one the year after and have never looked back since. Definitely worth it!
      Also any publication experience can prove helpful!

    If you think that I am just an old and bitter pharmacist think again. If you take off your rose colored glasses and honestly think about it you will know I am right. Unless you know someone or go to the proper school your idealized future will be just that: idealized.

    If you're going to pharmacy school just for Pharma I would think twice before applying. There are better and cheaper options

      definitely depends on overall goals! for someone who wishes to be a pharmacist, the 6 year PharmD program is definitely the best option

      You dont need residency to work for a pharmaceutical industry.. you will only need it when u r planning to proceed to be a clinical pharmacist.

      You definitely don’t! But as a pharmacist, it’s assumed you always work in a clinical setting, so this is to talk about how you can work in the pharma industry!

      I have been a pharmacist for more than 30 years . It is a dead profession. Do you do any real research for this “title” , it is a made up title. Drug expert. Will you se labs reports to see if the medication do as advertised. I doubt it. Most info that you are asked can be looked up in a book. A librarian can do that and the person asking will be able to apply that you are just a small and needless layer in the cake of health care. If you have your heart set on doing this a good course of action would be to get a teaching certificate in biology or chemistry and teach. You would have much better hours and you could do pharmacy part time. If you reall want to be called doctor it would be only two years to become a m.d.
