That works well, also try a sliding bevel, once the slates sit flat after any kick or tilt at eaves level, all you need is to mark from side lap to valley cut, use your level, mark and cut.
I thought I was the only roofer to use slate hooks. Glad to see others using them. They are more secure than nailing. One point for you ,there is a hook tacker on the market that speeds up the whole process, amazing device.
Can you push the slate up out of the clip to remove a tile? Asking as I might need to put a vent pipe up a slate roof with what looks like this fixing system. Thanks in advance!
I always slate like this. Ya don’t slate yaself in then n have to start walking over new slates. Good bit roofing that! Cutting in a valley the proper way!
Surprised the perps aren’t struck out ? Perhaps you did further over to the right, but plenty of tolerance between slates. How come you’re not using a slate knife or your combi hammer/slate knife ? Don’t think you’d be cutting some of the slates I’ve used over the years with your machine. I’m guessing you’re using Spanish slate and a bit softer in my experience. Nice job for me, plenty of pride.
No point in perps when you're falling into a valley or a hip cut. It's easy enough to tile or slate straight enough. Into a verge or an abutment then yeh ping your perps
@@Reddwarf1994 Yeah, I’ve done it too but never with the ‘ old tradesman ‘ who taught me !!!! No slates touched til the marking / setting out was done, his way or the highway !!!
@barrywood7400 fair game to any old school tradesmen who do things the right way. Working by the book is dying out sadly. In this instance though perping is not necessary in my opinion
That's a hard question to answer, At the start you'll only be as good or bad as the person who is teaching you. This goes for an apprenticeship or college course. I've worked with people that have every thing in life, fast cars big hours, but are shit roofers. Also worked with college teachers that are shit. Although, I appreciate your using hooks, your battening is all to fuck! The nail holes whether you’re using them or not are too high for the battens! That tells me the roof was either battened on the wrong gauge, or you’ve messed up somewhere 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I just slate straight through into the grp valley, then cut through everything with a stihl 410 , then mastic the 15 ft cut thru the entire valley with mastic , dont pass the knowledge out for free @!! Knowledge should be earned not given great vid again tho 👍
Over engineering a very simple thing jesus🤦🏻♂️ just use T iron (or break iron) and it’s done in seconds!no need to turn the slate a bunch of times especially no need to use that ruler thing!

I'm going to look that up. Thanks
Slate hook is for extra protection ur still ment to put 2 nails in the slate
used hooks and battens in Campbeltown 1985
Just watched our neighbours new house roof go on. They used hooks but only one nail per slate. Is this correct or should two nails per slate be used?
Back in my day had to grade them in 3 diff thickness and used to hole them to
The one advantage of hooks, you don't have to rake at an angle. You can run straight up the roof
i learned that style of slating in france saves your back a bit
They love a slate roof in France. Copper gutters as well
How is that any easier? I'd have been 3 courses up by now!!
Each to there own. Some cut with an angel grinder, I don't care how you do i. Just do the best you can
Right?Thought exactly the same😂

No, you need to bend the hook down and slide the slate out.

Aren't they suppose to be nailed as well as hooked ? Won't they rattle with wind otherwise ?
No they can't move. There's a hook at the bottom, one on each side and one at the top. There more secure than a nail down slate
What is the composition of that valley trough?
Glass reinforced polyester

Which slate tiles are these?
Spanish, 200mm x 400mm
Does not matter wot way you do it just as long you get a straight vally but good work

Always hole the slate from the back !
Correct Sir.
150mm gauges really?
@@serbancatalin1875 yes

Don’t use slate hooks. Just leaves the slates prone to needing repairs and falling

How so?
