Blackie, you hit the nail on the head! I'm 74. Worked farming and whatever most of my life in foster homes..I have PTSD from being every kind of abuse. My body is shot! I have COPD, allergies pneumonia like you have, have arthritis causing both knees an shoulders been replaced. Now I have Afib. I've been so sick that I can't eat and have lost a lot of muscle. My stomach gets so empty that I get dry heaves. I'm diabetic also. My doctors are no help and don't seem to care. I have no patience with myself. I love your videos because they are not over my head, military oriented, but, have shown me that being a great grandmother doesn't mean my life is over. I've lived learning how to do things myself. You've given me the desire to get back my muscle and balance. I use a rollator now. I've hit the books learning all I can. I watch gear reviews that inform me what I need in my rolling emergency bag. I upgrade to better quality but use my years of knowledge and common sense..I took my extras and made bags for friends that will never do it themselves...so thank you so much for your knowledge and patience with us old timers...male and female alike.😊

God Bless you Sister.. You are an inspiration to me. What is an rollator ? I need double knee replacements and lower back surgery, But I have neuropathy in right foot. Do you know anyway to reverse neuropathy. Doctor won't let me get knee replacements if neuropathy keeps spreading etc. God Bless 🙏🙏 you. I am praying for you daily my friend. Peace

@@jamesgibbs8827 a rollator is like a walker that has four wheels, a seat with storage, brakes and is easier on my arms and shoulders than a walker. Can't help you with the neuropathy. I know there's a lot of witchdocters out there willing to take your money. I have restless leg syndrome and bone spurs that make me crazy. Try some good castor oil. I use it for varicose veins and RLS when my lower legs want to run without me!

Hi Blackie, I would have never guessed you had all those issues to deal with. Very glad that you're still here with us and you've learned to adapt. Gives me inspiration to never give up. I'm not a "Spring Chicken " anymore either and can't do things as well as when I was younger. Thanks for the encouragement. 👍👍

    Thanks for that Blackie!
It's tough excepting the infirmities of getting older. At 72, I wonder what the heck happened. I used to lay in a full winters wood.
Cancer, a stroke. and a cabbage is what happened. In rehab, 3 days a week seems to take forever.
But I'm gonna get back to the woods or die trying.
Appreciated the good advice and the encouragement. You hang in there. Really enjoy the channel and have for years. Best to you and yours.

Wow! This is an awesome piece Blackie. At 71, I’m only a shadow of what I once was. I ride the “pain train” most every day. I don’t know exactly what is going to ache and hurt tomorrow, but I know it will be something. I’ve had prostrate cancer - several major operations and crohns.
Your guidance and suggestions are very encouraging.
Blessings on you and your mission to share your wisdom on the great outdoors!!

Great content, Blackie! I'm only 44, but have had a bunch of minor heart attacks, at least 2 strokes, been thru 25 surgeries so far, and beaten cancer. I also have bad arthritis in all of my joints, a collapsing spine, and no MCL or ACL in my right knee. But, I still push myself all of the time, and have an Instagram and TH-cam devoted to showing others with disabilities that they can still get out and enjoy nature. I'm actually getting ready to head out on a 223 mile hike across the Ouachita National Recreation Trail here in Arkansas. It will take me 2-3 times as long to hike it as others, but I'm hoping it will draw attention from and support for others with crippling disabilities, and maybe even lead to companies starting to offer catered supplies and support for those of us that have to actually push ourselves to do what others do without breaking a sweat. This all stems from others abandoning me because I couldn't keep up because of my health issues.

I went from brown to silver in about a year, thanks to orthopedic, cardiac, pulmonary, and neurological issues. At 55 I could outwork the majority of 20-somethings in my company. Now I get out of breath going from the couch to the kitchen. Balance issues cause frequent ping pong ball action on walls. I wholeheartedly understand about not tolerating the heat. It’s all new onset after catching “cooties”. Very much looking forward to cooler weather so I can try to regain some outdoor activities. Thank you for all you do, sir!

I just started walking with a cane after 5 months. I'm a bushcraft camper and I dying to get back out there it's like I lost a part of myself, the mountains. I miss the woods so much

If I were to name off all the injuries and maladies that afflict me, we'd be here a week. That being said, I am afraid of the day I can't roll out of bed and kick some ass.
I'm 36, and suffice to say, there's no excuse for laze. I have arthritis, multiple TBI's, a chronic sprain, severe traumatic nerve pain, my head has been half-collapsed, I've had 14 cardiac events since I was 21, and been in a three-day coma when I was 25. I still get out there and bust my ass, because I know that the alternative is atrophy, and a wheelchair. With a messed up back and a broken neck, that's not an option if I want reduced pain.
Never get off the hamster wheel, Blackie. It's a reality for us as we get older... 😢

Yes indeed! A little exercise and stretching every day keeps you fit.
This year I turned 51, but I'am twice as fit as my younger colleagues, despite my osteoarthritis, arthritis and gout.
    Why is that?
I walk 1.5 km to work every morning - 1.5 km back in the evening. During breaks at work I do a little stretching - because of the hips and the lower back. At home there are a few squats and torso bends - not much, but enough to lubricate the bones.
I go on a hike once or twice a month. Sometimes 8km, sometimes 15, sometimes 20km, mostly flat gravel paths, but also criss-cross over hill and dale. Somestimes even barefoot.
At work I have to go to the parts warehouse in the basement a few times a week to get materials. That's 103 steps down and 103 steps back up again with 5 kg parts max. in my hands. My colleagues see it as a burden, I see it as a sporting challenge that is paid for by my boss 😉.
What do I want to say with my post:
Always keep moving in moderation. If you rest, you will rust.

This is a very interesting video as it really hits home with me. I am 70 years old and like you, I have some health issues. With me it's my lungs, heart, joints and some muscle and tendon injuries. The last two years have been the worst with injury after injury. I started watching bushcraft videos and became inspired to start my own TH-cam channel. I wanted to get it going back in February but it has been difficult. The way you described your exercise is pretty much what I've been doing so I think maybe I'm on the right track. Anyway, I thank you for making this video. Maybe I can get my channel up before I turn 71 in February. Wish me luck and I'll continue to watch your great videos.

Evening, Blackie. Thanks for taking the time to address what some of us(okay almost every Silver Wolf) deal with or struggle with. Alot of what you said, the wife and I have talked about numerous times. Before they put 11 pieces of metal in my back, I couldn't stand for more than 5 minutes without needing a break. After the surgery I can now make it 3 miles of mixed terrain (the city park) with 25 pounds on my back. Not like on active duty so many years ago, but I'm not giving up or quitting. God Bless. Have a great night.

If you are able to ride a bicycle I recommend getting an ebike, the kind you can also pedal manually. You can take it out and pedal as much as you are able and build up your constitution but if you become too exhausted you have the motor to fall back on. Even using pedal assist is supposed to have health benefits. I'm not a proponent of electric cars, but it works well on a bicycle.

Sometimes I just to laugh at myself. The heat has kept me being a prisoner in my house. After dark sometimes I’ll venture outside. Recently I was going out for a walk after dark and wanted to take a flashlight. I put my Olight Warrior mini in my pocket. I used it once and put it in my shirt pocket. Well Pacemakers and magnets don’t mix. That light set off alarms on my monitor. Started calling 911. I finally got everything under control. And just sat down and laughed at myself. I remember my Dad saying getting old isn’t for sissies. But getting old is an honor. So many never got the chance to get old. Thanks for your videos Blackie

I try to stay busy outdoors whether it's in the pool, walking the creek, doing all kinds of yardwork, definitely not able to stomp it to the floorboard anymore! Thank god autumn is coming and I can look forward to some mild winter bushcrafting!

👍👍👍 .. great advice with lots of wisdom therein.
To touch on a few ..
I'm one of the Silvers (YOB 1950). I Nordic Walk regularly, Wednesdays being a Group Walk in a neighbouring village .. our specific day Group consisting mostly of retirees and economically non-active persons. Just yesterday, our Group Leader, she and I had a chat that covered some of what you mentioned in your post .. 'knowing what one's capabilities are, accepting whatever limitations one has and working within those limitations.' The Wednesday outing is quite a taxing with my legs afterwards knowing that I had 'been out'. Today, Thursday is a 'feet up' day with the most strenuous activity being the Pooches twice-daily walk .. mornings down to the local park at the river and afternoons into the adjacent forest to escape the heat (forecast for this afternoon 30°C / 86°F).
One must learn to 'listen' to one's body and allow for, after an activity, the body to 'recover' and build up stronger thereafter .. aka 'get fit'.
'Practicing' .. I have lost count as to how many meals, due to weather / other, when I have been house-bound, I have experimented with, new cook kit tested, etc, etc (bought and home-grown), on my 3rd floor flat (apartment in USA-speak) balcony (ably assisted by the little Malti-Poo .. naturally 😊).
I have a length of cord on me or nearby with which I practice knots .. watching You Tube 'Knot Vids', in front of the TV, waiting for and on Public Transport (the Public Transport Infrastructure here in Switzerland is World Class and I very seldom see the need to drive myself .. plus, bicycles and 'shanks pony' are also there to get me to and from my local Supermarket, Bank, Train Station and such). Practicing knots helps to develop 'muscle memorty' and I can do some without even thinking about it. Also, practicing knots helps one to 'understand' the 'mechanics' of a knot .. rather than blindly following the Mantra 'rabbit in / out of the hole, around the tree, etc, etc'. Makes the learning and adaptation of the knots far easier.
Good stuff in this post .. thanks for that .. take care ..

I’m so thankful that you’ve touched in this important topic. For me personally, this year has been one continuous heath issue after another. Several significant medical events have hit me, which have resulted in serious hospitalizations. Long- term diabetes has taken its toll. Heart issues, decreased kidney function, and some vision impairment. As a result, my mobility has been impacted. I’ve developed a drop foot. I’m now required to wear a brace on one of my lower legs and use a cane for improved balance. I’ve completed physiotherapy now. Like you, I would love to get back outdoors now that the weather has cooled. Your suggestions in this video are very encouraging to me. I’m thankful for the tips you’ve offered. I’ll admit that I just can’t do things the same way that I used to. I am blessed to have survived. I’m trying to walk on flat surfaces for at least an hour everyday. I’m working with my outdoor gear and my kits at the house to keep as sharp as possible with my skills. And I’m trying to adapt, physically, to these changes in my health. Your series on the “Silver Wolves” is likely right on target for so many folks. Thank you Blackie! - Tennessee Smoky

When I retired my parents I moved them both in with my family. My father had atrial fibrillation and hypertension and my mother is type 1. Physical activity was very limited.
Apart from the obvious "personal wellbeing", my first step was to study up on local remedies.
Topical CBD has done wonders for instant pain relief, both of them suffering from arthritis. Also, most areas have a leaf or bark you can boil for congestion etc. Just to start.
6yrs later we're still going strong: They now offer their own roles in the homestead, and weve managed to add 2 more children to the Tribe 😂
I'm under 40 but i believe its my due diligence to plan ahead, so thanks for addressing this issue!

Thank you for this Video, every one should be required to watch it, before going to any outdoor survival training classes...
This Silver Wolf grew up in Germany, so I am not used to Kentucky Summer heat either.
I also have pulmonary issues that get worth throughout the Summer month. I know with the breathing part exactly were you are coming from.
I have a CPAP machine I have to use nightly and when I don't use it for several nights, I can fall asleep walking...so during the hot Summer days I to have learned to do small things as not to cause too much havoc with my lungs.
I am doing things like you said, at the moment, I am working on my outdoor fire starting skills, and getting a variety of firestarters ready for future camping trips.
Since I am widowed I only cook for myself anymore, so I ALREADY scaled my kitchen down to just camping pots and pans.
I have two tents one tipee type tent, which is at the moment too bulky for me to carry, and I have an older pup tent that I like.
It leaks at the seams , so if I use it to go into my woods I also will take a tarp for rain protection.
I own probably about 20 versions of out door cooking stoves, from a trangia, to the ooni Pizza stove and different sizes in between. I only tried out maybe 7 of my stoves, because I keep going back to a little homemade stove that James Bender showed on one of his videos.
It is a metal sink strainer with cotter pins. I really love that little stove and I use the fuel tabs with it.
I am trying to use every one of my stoves to find out which one I like best, but when you keep going back to the one you like, you are NOT very objective 😂.
I also am working on using more camping tools around the house rather then using big Tools.
I have been trying to lighten my load ever since I was homeless after the death of my husband. I have come a long way, but I still lack a lot and in the same time I also realize I am not 25 anylonger.
And having been very close to a stroke in my middle 40's, I started getting rid of heavy furniture that I couldn't move by myself.
I also have a bad back, and like you, there are days we're things don't want to work like your brain thinks it should do (you did it with 25, right?)
So those are the days reserved for mental exercises...
My life has been turned upside down since my middle 40's, and I always am trying to find ways to lighten my load and learning to do things on my own now.
So your advice is sage my friend!🥰

Same here, buddy! Was a barbell king and on top of the world until mid-later 40s. Arthritis in my genetics on both family sides and bone deformity cast my lot. Just recently resubscribed here. I only watch German language outdoor vids. For me, it's about the language, not about the outdoor skills (been doing those forever). Horrido! mein Freund!

I have 3 hammocks, but I find laying in them freezes my behind 🥶
Trying to find ways to warm them up for 2 to 3 AM times (my behind demands I get up and use the little girls room😂). So if I can keep the underside warm enough I can ignore the demands and not even wake up until daylight 🧐
I been looking into underquilts for hammocks, but are they really that good? Can I make it cheaper myself? Like using an emergency blanket as an underquilt? Would it work? Remember I am 25 *2+Another decade+ 3 more...that gets me at night time in the 🥶 freezer section 🥴

I ain't all that old, 44, but I can feel the changes between 24 and 44.
I could almost sprint 20 miles at 24, at 44? Man I tell you, 10 miles is a day walk now, miles have gone down and breaks have gone up to rest knees and ankles and hips etc.
But I have learned that a slower pace has its perks, see a whole lot more for one.
I think it's important to know that pushing yourself is one thing, risking yourself is another.
    Take her easy everyone.

I worked in a warehouse and made jobsite deliveries, toting heavy items on my shoulders in the heat, cold, rain and snow, sometimes for a couple of hundred feet when we couldn't get the truck any closer to the site, for many years I was lean and mean, 6'1", 180 and nothing but muscle. By the time I was in my mid 30s my back was shot and I had to take an office job. I put on considerable weight and have been between 250 and 280 pounds for almost 20 years. I have never been one to just exercise for the sake of exercise. I simply will not stick with it. Unless I'm working at something and the exercise is a byproduct, it ain't happening. If I could get paid to unload 53 foot trailers again, I'd drop the weight and build muscle again in a heartbeat but I realized long ago that just isn't going to happen.

Thank you so much for this video Blackie. I've been a service technician for about 44 years now, from major appliances today HVAC. My body is full of arthritis. I had my right hip replaced 1 year ago, I still try to walk daily to keep me going. I find it takes me about 10 steps before most of the pain eases. I will definitely not give up and I see that the stretching should help. I had high blood pressure about 4 years ago, I went on a keto diet before my hip surgery because it was supposed to lessen the inflammation. It did, but I also lost about 75 lbs, now I am off the blood pressure medication and don't have high blood pressure anymore. Cheers 🇨🇦

Greetings Blackie- Sounds like you've been thru the ringer a time or two. You brought up some good points here- stretching being one of them which is pretty important. My thoughts are phrased up with: Don't have big expectations and know your limitations. I cant put on a 70lb pack and do 12 miles with no issues like I used to, so I just go out with a light load and keep the distance within my own limitation. As you stated- starting with a light load and adding a little more each time is a good way to reach those goals. Good stuff here as always and I hope your correct about the major heat/humidity leaving because Im ready for fall already. Be safe out there- Carry On-

The old military adage applies good sir. Improvise, adapt, and overcome. Or if you prefer, over, under, around, or through, theres a way, you can find it. Imo, the exercise of the mind is so very important. The ability to be creative and active in your mind allows us to adapt and think our way around the limitations we face as we age. 🤝

That probably seems a strong or harsh take to some. It's not meant to intimidate or insult. Both my father and brother served so I was raised in a can do attitude. They both did a bit as D.I.'s 🤣 guess who they practiced on...truth be told I'm the better for it. So please dont be offended, It was just drilled into me to do what you have to do and think on your feet. I like your down to earth demeanor Blackie. I will admit, your patience seems to soak in to folks. Subbed. I saw your first vid last week i think and it was on old timers. Knives have always been a soft spot for me.

Yep walk at the store if you are looking for a workout…the shopping carts will help you with mobility too. I’ve had multiple surgeries on my leg to keep it and that really helped better than a walker for later recovery. Have fun stay safe.

have learned this spring / summer with the smoke from canada got to me due to my lung issues so that keep me indoors at home. mobility & arthritis , up here in minn. have had some comfy days. lows in the 50's highs in th upper 60s to 70s. those lows in the 50s are the ones that have set off the arthritis. mine is at the top of the hip bone, lower back. so just getting vertical is the challenge. the only thing to do is work through it. of getting down to sitting, getting up to standing, straighting to full vertical. walking at own pace. like your saying, flexing, stretching, finding your new limitations.
