That 1980s K-Mart commercial made me cry. 🥺 I loved the shopping trips with my Grandmother to the K-Mart at Wayne Hills Shopping Center in New Jersey when I was a kid. K-Mart and Ben Franklin were her favorite "everything" stores.
My local Kmart closed a few years ago and the last song they played over the PA system was..... Video Killed the Radio Star. I was there for the last hour that they were open since 1986. The store had been run down for the last few years in the diner area was shut down probably about 10 years ago and being used for storage. During the last year that they were opened there was only one register open and the shelves were not getting stocked anymore. It was so sad to hear the manager say that they are closing the doors in 2 minutes and then to see all the lights turned off a dozen or so at a time until the store was dark
I remember eating a pre-made submarine sandwich at S.S. Kresge at the lunch counter in the 1950’s. We would shop there often (there was a W. T. Grants and an E. J. Korvettes in the same shopping center) and I also loved getting a movie theatre style box of popcorn at Kresge. I shopped at K Mart over the years as there were many in this region. I still have fleece pullovers I purchased at K Mart in 2005 - they look absolutely brand new despite the mileage. I also shopped at many high end stores but always loved getting a discount store deal. What was done to K Mart and Sears was a crime.
You brought back some great memories. They sold those pre- made subs wrapped in cellophane in the 70's at Kmart too. My Dad used to always buy one on the way out at the little deli counter near the checkout in our store and the popcorn always smelled so great.
I worked on the fire alarm system at a furniture store today and while working in the warehouse area I found old Kmart signs! Not sure when that particular store closed but they still have the original air diffusers and even the old loudspeakers still in use.

I thought they were all gone. I really miss K Mart sure it was dated but I liked that oldschool charm. It's sad seeing the empty Big K I used to shop at. I wish I had stopped in and bought the K sign from the front.
After this one closes 3 in the US mainland and 6 in the territories. Miami Florida, Bridgehampton New York and Westwood New Jersey far as the states locations. All 4 US Virgin Islands locations plus one in Puerto Rico in San Juan and the only Guam location reminds in the territories.

I think of all the kids who had great birthdays and Christmas’ because of store like this. The memories of millions of people walking the isles. I really wish a miracle would occur, and see these legendary stores come back. Very sad!!
Oh my heart skipped a beat when I saw that diehard sign up there. And that big K the one you said you’d like to chisel off the wall so would I I had a fantasy about my husband dropping me off a half hour before closing hiding somewhere and just going to town on those two things and then sneaking out the back door. I think my husband thinks I’m crazy for how attached I am to Kmart, so I love to see that I’m not alone!
Enjoyed this, guys. My late Dad always liked them - I enjoyed seeing the Hal'ween stuff in the fall at ours, which shut down about five, six years ago at least. They ran the "special mark-down" prices up at it, too, before closing. I would've expected the Sears half to sink first, but I imagine it will follow suit soon enough. RIP to another piece of my youth.
Thank you for these videos.. I remember the last Kmart I went into was the one in Haltom City, Texas.. that y'all visited.. I really can't remember if it was late 90s or early 2000s when I went with my mom and it was basically a liquidation sale. Almost everything gone.. worse than this store. The toy section only had a few crappy toys.. I'm 31 now.. I was maybe 7-10 then. But I remember when Kmart was running and thriving still and we would get nachos and pizza slices from their cafe.. seeing these videos takes me back. Speaking of the Haltom city one. It is now a store called Ollie's.. inside the shelving, ceiling, registers and even the carts were all used when Kmart was still there. They have some decent deals on things and I go every now and then. Just brings me back to the 90s and my child hood. At least the walk into the store..they cut off about 50% of it.. one part is the gym and the other is probably the back.. anyways. Been watching since 2020!! Keep em coming!!
Back in the day, I used to work for Kmart. I, hired on April 28, 1985, and that was when Kmart was owned by S.S.Kresge Company 5&10 cent stores, and the Kmart Corporation. The, logo was a big red K with a turquoise mart. That, was the old school Kmart. I miss Kmart 😢
Great video! As of March 2023 the old Avenel K-mart was being converted into a "Floor & Decor" retail store. When we visited, the entire site was undergoing asbestos abatement. Apparently, the floor tiles were made of asbestos.

In the late 1980,s I worked for over 4 years at. K MART. WHAT CLOSED US DOWN WAS SHOPLIFTING AT over $1,000,000.00 losses. The dishonest customers did it to themselves.

In the 80's I worked for Kmart when I was a senior in high school and in college. It was a great company to work for.
