During the Battle of Britain in 1940, the ghosts of newly deceased young fighter pilots, used to enter Air Chief Marshall Hugh Dowding's office, confused as to their state of being. Dowding could see them and communicate with them, having the difficult task of explaining to the pilots the reality of their new state of existence. They couldn't understand or except it. Hugh wrote about this sad everyday occurrence in his dairies and memoirs. It gnawed at his conscience till the day he died.
That’s such an interesting story. Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s also so tragic to think of how many young men with their lived ahead of them were killed. Terrible, as it is in all wars, I suppose. Thank you again for this 👻🙋♀️

The United Kingdom has many haunted airfields. Two of the most haunted airfields are RAF Bircham Newton and Montrose in Scotland. The airport I used to live close by to is haunted by the ghost of either a Defiant or a Hawker Hurricane. It was regularly seen when I was a brat and there are also a handful of crash sites around the airport. It was a fighter station during the first and second world wars, and if you walked across the fields, early in the morning, close to the runway, particularly during the months of The Battle of Britain, you could often hear the sound of Merlin engines being run up.
Yes I suspect I could do a whole video on the subject and I would enjoy finding out about the history. Wow that’s amazing about the airfield near you. You do read of people regularly seeing these phantom aircraft flying through valleys or over a hill followed by crashing sounds. It must be very unnerving to witness.Thank you for sharing your story 👻🙋♀️🙏

Way back before the RAF, a pilot named Desmond Arthur was killed at Montrose in Scotland because of a shabby repair job. They listed it as pilot error and Desmond was not happy about it because he haunted the place until they did a proper investigation. It's always been one of my favorite ghost stories. Some people think that same ghost came back years later but the early days of aviation were so deadly, plenty of pilots died at Montrose. I like to think Mr. Arthur found his peace after the record was corrected and moved on.
I have read about Montrose and it seems that it has some very interesting, yet tragic stories, for sure. Very sad. Thank you so much 👻🙋♀️🙏
Desmond was not by accounts a popular pilot, being greatly disliked by both ground crew and fellow officers. On his deathbed he claimed his aircraft had been tampered with. Nothing was proved.

Yes I think I might have one of those books somewhere. I have got a book on haunted airfields but I don’t know if it is by him 👻🙋♀️
On TH-cam there is a fascinating radio documentary on ghosts of RAF bircham newton, one of the best I've heard. Equally impressive is ghost train a 40 minutes documentary, again on TH-cam and dates from 1988. Details the haunting of RAF Luton magna outside York. Have a great day Nichola and watch the weather! My mom grew up during WW2 on the outskirts of London. She used to sneak out at night to go dancing with American soldiers. One night she tripped over a dead soldier in a field.
