My first car was a 64 GTO I bought (used) exactly 49 years ago. (4-speed, tri-power, posi, 3.90 rear end). Had to sell it when I got drafted. I still fantasize getting another. The sound of those triple Rochesters kicking in is orgasmic. Brings back many fond street-racing memories.
Wow, I know what you mean. Back in the late 60's I had a 64 GTO with the 389 Tri-Power with Hurst 4 speed installed. It had a duntov grind 3/4 cam and 10.5:1 pistons. No headers, but just the dual exhaust. I had 41 street races with it and won 39. And the two that I lost I lost at the very top end. I would race starting at 30mph because I had really high gears (2,80) and off the line it was sluggish. But when you're moving, it was a beast and accelerated like you wouldn't believe! I loved that car and wish I had it today.
You keep the Goat and turn it over later to your kid there, cool Dad. I had a good friend who owned that model (1st year '64 in black). He ran 60s tires on the back, 4 barrel carb, and Muncie trans. It was his daily driver in high school (73-75). His gear set probably was in the 3.23 range because one night we went 140. Yes, the telephone poles looked like a picket fence . In fact. Dennis L. of Woodstock, Connecticut, once buried the 140 mph speedometer and snapped the cable. When he brought it to the shop to buy another cable, they asked him how' he broke it. Dennis told them he was "just driving along." Dennis was a good man, friend and driver. Sadly we lost him in his early twenties. 'Hearing that transmission whine and seeing that gunmetal dash really brought it all back. Thank you.
Thanks for the video! I spent a great deal of time behind the wheel of one these warriors and the sound of the tripower still sends shivers of my spine.
This is, bar none, the best GTO video I've seen BECAUSE I had almost the same car when I was 19. I'm almost 58 now... The blue interior, and the hood-up with Power NOTHING; plus the headers and Tri-Power, just brought me back. My car was rear-ended; sold; and wrecked within 2 weeks...the only surviving part...?...the hood. Went on another GTO. Your video is EXACTLY how I remember mine. Watching the pedals; shifiting; the sound and sudden-ness of the Tri-Power is refreshingly envigorating
I purchased a new GTO in May 1964...389ci w/tripower...4spd close ratio manual trans...optional gear ratio (3.55:1 as I remember) Power steering...AM radio Sticker: $3,450.
My mouth is watering! Looks like a very straight car to me and she pulls real strong. I had 3 "Goats". A '66 with base 389 and 4 bbl.(Rochester), a '68 black/black(boy, was that ever a beauty) with hidden headlights. I had both of these in the early '70's before the oil crunch. In the mid-'80's I had a '67 with the 400 and hydramatic, turbo 400) dark blue/dark blue interior with factory Rally II wheels. Nice one and the prettiest of the three. Ah the memories. Ones like yours today can fetch VERY high $$$! Congratulations on such a great ride and very nice example.
I always liked the looks of this year the best. I was five when these came out and my ten year old brother was aware of them and would excitedly point them out and with exhilaration explain what one of the first muscle cars was all about. Still the best lookin' Pontiac. Never drove a Pontiac that wasn't "snotty".
I am so jealous of you. I want that little GTO. That car was based off that song little GTO, three deuces, and a four speed and a 389 I’m in love with little GTO
I'm a BIG fan of Cameo Ivory paint on '64 GTO's, they're especially intimidating in code 'C' paint! I suppose it's the connection that Cameo Ivory has w/Arnie The Farmer's "White Tornado"! I was 16 when the GTO was introduced in Sept. of '63. The guy who I bought my Milw. Journal route from had a black post coupe. When you looked under his GTO what caught your eye were the 2 massive slicks crammed inside the wells, & the differential looked like a small "period" between those huge meats! I never heard or saw his GTO run @ Union Grove Dragaway but it looked plenty scary in the garage as I walked up the driveway to deliver his Journal. My friend the owner went on to serve in the AF who flew the Douglas A1-E Skyraider in Vietnam. When I became a Marine a bit later, my time in 'Nam was '68 & '69. .
Wee lots kinda hard to tell how well it runs. About all you could see was the dash board. It did sound very good you could kinda tell it may have had some power by the sound. It was a very nice looking car.I would love to have it.thanks for showing it.
Damn, 1st year metal dash (& later Firebird TAs)! Q: With a rock crusher Muncie, "some cam" & tripower? A: "You may want to hold onto the camera there."
beautiful car.....ready to go pick mine up soon! 64 all original but sadly, it has the 2 speed powerglide and the 4 barrel. Still an absolute beauty and amazing ride, except the gas mileage! but who cares when you're driving a GTO?
Sweet ride, and a nice video of the ride-a-long. Some-one who actually opens the end carbs. Well done. One minor critique tho. He mentions, "syncing" the carbs. Not needed. The end carbs don't have idle circuits. Still a great car, and video. Thanks for posting. (Still got it?)
They say the 64 GTO is the 1st muscle car do to its engine power & mostly its weight. It made 348 HP & 428 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. It weighed 3,500 lbs. The 62 Impala 409 made 360 hp and 409 lb-ft of torque & weighed 3,500 lbs. 0-60 6.3 seconds. They are close. So there is the question. Why isn't the 62 Impala considered the 1st muscle car??? Love both. Just trying to get edjumacated!
my dad has 4 64 gtos and 2 65 gtos. my uncle bought a 64 gto convertible brand new and the sticker price was around 2600 bucks. the 65 convertible we're restoring right now was about 2700 bucks brand new..
Bud, Ive studied, worked, modified, raced, restored these cars since I was 5 and my family has been in the racing and Automotive industry since 1920. I have over 40k pictures from 1950-1974 and have the facts to back up my statements and I have talked to some of the most famous people in drag racing from the 50's-60's and early 70's. Hell my house is on top of Green Valley drag strip. I am a Mopar fanatic but Love GM products, but dont take me for my word go look it up, get a few books on it.
That's an awesome GTO. I love everything about it including the Keystone wheels. The ride-along could have been better though; it was hard to tell how fast the car is accelerating through the gears when the camera is usually on the gauges. what's up with that? It was frustrating watching it during the ride along and I suppose that's why several viewers gave you a thumbs down on it. I wont rate it one way or the other, and thanks for posting it... a cool GTO you should be proud of.
awsome '64, i currently own a '65 4bbl. 4spd. coupe that i love. when i was 18, i had a true '64 royal bobcat tri-power 4spd.. the video is cool ,but doesnt show the real feel of this car. you got to be behind the wheel to experience the brute power it has....rickm.
i don't mean to start an argument here, but the gto when it was first introduced in 1964 it was able to keep up with the 64 Ferrari GTO. which was supposed to be real hot shit. so i don't know where you're gettin off sayin the Pontiac GTO wasn't fast. and they were meant for the middle class with an average sticker price of $2500.
My first new car was a 64 GTO Tri-Power . It was lacking in brakes, but it was more stable at high speeds than the 67 427-StingRay that I bought later. If I had kept this car, I would have installed AirHeart disc brakes on it.
Research shows that the first muscle car was likely the 1938 Buick Century. The huge 141hp, 320ci OHV Buick Roadmaster engine and 3-sp trans was installed into the small Buick Special chassis and renamed the Century. Police got on to using the Century as there was nothing that could outrun it. Hot rodders of the 40’s also used this engine in coupes and roadsters. Buick claimed that its 1938 Century models were the fastest U.S. production-based cars on the road. In fact, at the GM Proving Grounds, one Century was clocked at a top speed of 103 mph. A 1938 Century sport coupe held the NHRA class record into the 1950’s.
Great car, lousy video! Next time, show us the speedometer and tach. The viewer doesn't know how fast it can accelerate! Sounds great, looks great, but next time, get someone that understands how to use a camera. SHOW US THE SPEEDOMETER/TACH
.... and I forgot to mention, that the first modification that I did was to install an Olds-442 rear sway-bar which greatly improved the cornering-understeer (push) of this car.
That was the lower end GTO, if you follow the price as it went on through out the years the price vs other muscle cars skyrocketed. With every option checked for the GTO in 64 it would cost you 4500 dollars. Which Mopar was selling there racing Hemi in a 65 Coronet with aluminum fenders for 3900.
Ive seen a better video of this car. The guy Im guessing is the original owner took it for a good test ride! This ole Goat really hauls for what it is.
That's how you drive a GTO. He's not riding the clutch. Y'all that are commenting on that must be new-car automatic-trans drivers. Get a REAL car. Learn to drive it. Kids these days...geez.
My dad had one and it was pretty sweet.. Was pretty fast.. I think it was bored over a little because the owner got killed by the commies in Vietnam and it sit for a while and froze up.. It was black
Im not trying to put you down or your cars man, I love the GTO but it wasnt the first muscle car and certainly wasnt the fastest. Just like the Mustang wasnt the first pony car, the 64 1/2 Plymouth Barracuda came out 2 weeks before the Mustang but because the Mustang had a huge commercial push behind it and lets face it looked a lot better it is thought of as the first Pony car.
Nice car, but a few pokes at you......you shift like your in cold molasses, you said "period correct" wheels.....NO KEYSTONE CLASSICS ARE PERIOD CORRECT FOR MID 70'S....wud look MUCH more muscle car like with stock rally 1's....and prettier.....next, you said it had a cam in it.....i hear no lope, and 6X heads only reduce your compression and flow less than like a nice set of #48's or 62's from the late 60's.....Nice car tho....i'm a Pontiac aficionado...own a 64 Tempest, with a LARGE motor in it......wud just like to see "period correct" Rims, and dont brag about a cam with no lope, your heads make the car slower.....i know every Pontiac head, and its flow......your 6X's aren't doin you any favors, however, i REALLY dig the car....just tryin to give you some food for thought..keep Poncho's alive, and hope i havent hurt your feelings too bad....PEACE my fellow Poncho owner..
a tempest or lemans originally and not a factory gto...sorry but i owned a new 65 gto...and i know without doubt this is a made car..still very nice...but was never a real gto..
If this is not a real gto then yours isn’t neither lol they didn’t start putting it on the vin 242 or whatever 3 numbers till 1966 lol you dumb as shit
I"m sure you have alot of facts to back up that statement Dan thankyou for your valuable input, and we would sure all enjoy a video of your 65, The car is PHS documented with orginal window sticker ,it is 455 powered with a non orginal engine
I LOVE the 64 the GOAT.. You are the BEST. See you again !
My first car was a 64 GTO I bought (used) exactly 49 years ago. (4-speed, tri-power, posi, 3.90 rear end). Had to sell it when I got drafted. I still fantasize getting another.

Funny that story since I plan on retiring from the marines and using some of my stacked thousands from those 20 yrs of service to buy one of these.
You keep the Goat and turn it over later to your kid there, cool Dad.

Thanks for showing us your car !
Thanks for the video!
I spent a great deal of time behind the wheel of one these warriors and the sound of the tripower still sends shivers of my spine.
I had 65 gto when I was in high school 389 tri power 4speed 3:90 gears that car was so much fun to drive . Love this video brings back memories
That 4 speed transmission whine, music to my ears.

STOP RIDING THE CLUTCH!
Yea! That was drinin me crazy!
I purchased a new GTO in May 1964...389ci w/tripower...4spd close ratio manual trans...optional gear ratio (3.55:1 as I remember) Power steering...AM radio
Sticker: $3,450.
You ride your clutch !
Beautiful. Thanks for the ride down yesteryear.
My mouth is watering! Looks like a very straight car to me and she pulls real strong. I had 3 "Goats". Never heard a gto owner refer to them as goats. I had a 64 and a 65, non owners called them goats

Had a temiphis 326 V8 3 on the tree to look the same on the outside white thanks for posting
U r very lucky to have such a fine ride!
I had a 67 and a 69. Both bought brand new . Both fast, but didn't have that tri-power sound !
Awesome car sounds great and fast. Pointer don’t ride the clutch
Nice car and nice sound .
I have a 64 bonneville conv. with 64 389 Tripower GTO engine in it. 76 XW code.
Keep up your good work and keep the car.
that car is awesome

My time in Nam as a Marine was '67-'68!! I left my '66 GTO with my dad!! I never saw it again!! 9:39
Very nice ride. I'd lik this on the drag strip.
Man do I miss that sound!!!!!!!!!! I will own another someday soon.
Nothing like a hot car and some RocknRoll.
Wee lots kinda hard to tell how well it runs. About all you could see was the dash board. It did sound very good you could kinda tell it may have had some power by the sound. It was a very nice looking car.I would love to have it.thanks for showing it.
A REAL Muscle car... Not like the cheap crap today...
Damn, 1st year metal dash (& later Firebird TAs)!
Q: With a rock crusher Muncie, "some cam" & tripower?
A: "You may want to hold onto the camera there."
Enjoy it brother.
very nice!
Nice! Hope you’re still enjoying this car.
My dream is to have a classic muscle car some day.
Very cool! I needed that.
thanks busmaster you made our day, nothin fancy but you get the idea
Absofrekinlutly awesome car man
Looks like my white GTO I had in 1966.
Had a 64 also , amazing beast
I do not want to make you mad but you need to shift about five times faster than that. Nice car......Nice vid
Nice gauges & dash. It's all we got to see?
my 12 year old daughter is available if you would like some pointers on shifting .
How sweet it is ,,go go GTO!!!!
beautiful car.....ready to go pick mine up soon! 64 all original but sadly, it has the 2 speed powerglide and the 4 barrel. Still an absolute beauty and amazing ride, except the gas mileage! but who cares when you're driving a GTO?
My '65 GTO tripower 4 speed 3:55 rear averaged 17 MPG in easy driving...
nice ride man i like the 4 speed tri power
Sweet ride, and a nice video of the ride-a-long. Some-one who actually opens the end carbs. Well done.
One minor critique tho. He mentions, "syncing" the carbs. Not needed. The end carbs don't have idle circuits.

Got any 64’s for sale?
I was responding to someone who said it was a 455. I own a 64 GTO original with 389 4 bbl.
Man that's a goer...

but the GTO was the one that really kicked off the muscle car era cause it was cheaper than your 413 Max Wedge Chrsylers Dodges and Plymouths.
That's an awesome GTO. I love everything about it including the Keystone wheels. If I had wanted a Cadillac, I would have bought one :-)
super COOL
besides, my uncle bought a brand new 64 gto convertible, and the price was about 2600 dollars. and he was not upper class by any means.
Sticker for that would have been about $3200.
i don't mean to start an argument here, but the gto when it was first introduced in 1964 it was able to keep up with the 64 Ferrari GTO. which was supposed to be real hot shit. so i don't know where you're gettin off sayin the Pontiac GTO wasn't fast. and they were meant for the middle class with an average sticker price of $2500.

This car sounds awesome. Is it a 455 or 389?
389, man. You don't know your GTO's, do you?
Oil them hood hinges. You also missing the Pontiac emblem on the horn button. Otherwise pretty nice goat
I want to drive this baby.
wrong valve covers
Get your foot off the clutch!

Yes I own one of the same with a 1966 tripower)
Looks like the air filters need to be changed

STFU AND MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO
D. Jones lol
Yea, I really wanted to watch the volt gauge
Agree with the camera on the gauges, way too much.
Car seems to run very stock-the gearing gives it the go power
.... and I forgot to mention, that the first modification that I did was to install an Olds-442 rear sway-bar which greatly improved the cornering-understeer (push) of this car.
I had a 64 and 65 with 4-speed and Tri-Power. Ain't nothing like that sound. I miss it. Don't rev them stock Pontiac's over 5500 or 455's over 5100 :)
I consistently wound my 4bbl '64 to 5700 in 2nd and 3rd when in competition mode, 5000 was it for 1st.
Iron American Dream on TH-cam. Share it. Take a ride across the promised land.
Ive seen a better video of this car. The guy Im guessing is the original owner took it for a good test ride! This ole Goat really hauls for what it is.
get your foot off the clutch pedal
WHEN YOU PLAY...SOONER OR LATER YOU'LL PAY!!
That's how you drive a GTO.
He's not riding the clutch.
Y'all that are commenting on that must be new-car automatic-trans drivers.
Get a REAL car.
Learn to drive it.
Kids these days...geez.
Looks like his foot is resting on that clutch pedal evrey time you show it. Not good for the TOB. But, yeah, the car looks pretty quick. Very nice.
sounds like a M22 muncie trany.
SELL IT TO ME
Burning a LittLe oil. Are we😜😊
You need to learn how to "power shift" it.
Please wind that beautiful 389 out!!It sounded like you back off when she's really howling!!Just saying.
Sounds like it has a miss.
ya know what, i'm not even gonna waste my time on you.
gives me wood.
A poncho is a garment
Nice.
Now all you need is some crass 20" chrome wheels ;-)
just kidding.
The car is great but the cameraman is horrible - not a clue how to use a camera. I got a headache from watching this little clip
a tempest or lemans originally and not a factory gto...sorry but i owned a new 65 gto...and i know without doubt this is a made car..still very nice...but was never a real gto..
The '64 GTO was an option package of the Tempest, but it was still a "Real" from the factory GTO.
If this is not a real gto then yours isn’t neither lol they didn’t start putting it on the vin 242 or whatever 3 numbers till 1966 lol you dumb as shit
Get off the clutch .. cringe !
I"m sure you have alot of facts to back up that statement Dan thankyou for your valuable input, and we would sure all enjoy a video of your 65, The car is PHS documented with orginal window sticker ,it is 455 powered with a non orginal engine
