  • This video shows an excellent example of normal play behavior between two male cats. Males often engage in rough play well into their teenage years. What you see here is not aggression.

      At first there was just a curious absence of the cats that used to frequent our garden.
      Then I heard cat fighting one night on our lawn, no idea who it was but since there's only 2 cats that still frequented it it's not too hard to guess.
      A few months later I watched one of the cats (black and white, normal cat size) leave rather hurriedly as soon as it realized that Bella (tiny grey fluffy cat, 50% fur) was present, the latter gave her a rather intense stare while it hurried away.
      I guess that solves the riddle of where the other cats went.

      @@ImSPOTon same here... So difficult though especially with a tough at heart stray cat and my two indoor cats :( the stray cat is older and loves us dearly, curling up besides us and purring quite loud..🧡 but the moment she sees our other younger females, she'll chase and dart at them, she'd tear them to shreads I'm sure 😥 so I never let them get close. So whenever night hits in this country side, she likes to come and stay in a separate room.. one of us has to accompany her too or she gets lonely, but she's the best cat for pest control cause she'll kill every mouse she sees! its amazing.. And a little bit of an 'ew" factor.. she eats them too 💀😅🤣 my other ones they don't pounce quick enough, but only flock at it in the crevice of a room..
      During the wintertime when it became too cold for her to go out I wanted to shorten her nails a bunch just so she wouldn't slash the other cats too severely, I wondered,, based on videos I watched if they need to fight a few times in order to healthily move on?? I want to link the video I saw, but I'd have to find it. It was of these garden cats that brawled 3 times or something and finally gave up and accepted their presence together in the territory!

We been keeping her in a separate room but we let her out for visits. They often initially nuzzle up together but then it turns into almost constant fighting or playing... we always get nervous and break it up. They aren’t growling or hissing but it looks like they’re biting each other really hard. After we separate sometimes one or the other is panting with their tongue out. The rest of the time they spend cuddling, licking, watching birds out the window and doing pretty much everything together. It took a long time and a lot of patience but now we're so grateful they love each other so much.

    This is perfect. I'm new to cats, worked with them for years, just never had one of my own. Brought home a kitten, 3.5 month old, that I found in my jobs dumpster. (Likely from a feral cat's litter, not a case of abandonment by humans) This is how him and my 1.5 y.o 25lb poodle pup play. Happy to hear he'll likely play with her like this for quite some time. She loves him to death, and he's more comfortable around her than any human so far. 1 month with us, he's just now starting to purr when I pet him, and has cut back on running away from my family when we approach. He shares a water bowl with my poodle and they eat and drink together, although he has his own food and water, eats her food sometimes. (We place his food up high because she will entirely eat his) He doesn't try to hunt my bunny, but also isn't scared of him. Bunny is fine with him being around. My family swore up and down that they didnt like cats, until I brought him home, now they buy him toys and treats, and take him to vet appointments and make sure he has food and water when im working. Next step is get him neutered.

    I rescued one of my cats from my backyard a few years ago. I had a one year old cat at the time and I kept them separate while she recovered from her trauma. A while later I introduced them and she was very intimidated because he had grown up playing with other cats and is very sociable with other cats. But after a week they were playing and wrestling together. They love each other and understand eachother's limits.

    I recently introduced a kitty to my older cat. At first, she hated the baby cat. She would growl and hiss. I realized she was actually terrified by the new presence. The kitten was scared of humans, and darted towards my old cat for protection, only to be received with aggression. It was not an easy adjusting period.
    After a few months, they slowly became friends. We did all the proper introductory process and they are litter partners now, and sleep together. My old cat would groom her new baby. That is until the kitty starts moving. Then my cat would start growling and hissing, and pawing. Then she would start grooming again until the kitty starts moving or playing, or even grooming her back.
    They play a lot, but the older cat would also growl and hiss, and then they would start chasing each other, taking turns and all. They never bite each other, but the older cat is ALWAYS growling and hissing. She also appears annoyed at times, but after a couple minutes, she goes back for more. The baby cat is always ready to play.
    I do not know what to do because they seem to be only playing, but most people say that growling and hissing is NOT playing.
    Don´t know what to believe anymore. I separate them, and they cry because they want to see where the other cat is.

      Growls and hisses are warnings, and some cats are quite territorial or antisocial. If they aren't screaming, there's no fur flying, and they go back for more then it's probably fine. Just be careful about the younger cat because they'll be used to ignoring the warnings of the older cat by now.
      It's probably worth making sure both cats have somewhere enclosed they can retreat to, kittens can be tiring on older cats too.

    • @MarcelCasella
      @MarcelCasella 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks.
      Yes, that´s exactly what I can observe. The young cat wants to play all the time and does not leave the other alone. She does not seem to understand the meaning of the hissing anymore. However, they don´t hurt each other. No screams and no flying fur.
      I´m trying to create high spaces for the older cat to retreat to, but the young lady still reaches. The worst part is the old cat does not like me to lock the other up. If I separate them, she starts meowing asking me to open the door. However, as soon as the other storms in, she runs away, and growls and hisses. But she wants to make sure the younger cat is ok. SMH
      Update: They´re chasing each other right now.

    • @eis27182818
      @eis27182818 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you make sure there's places to hide, that's usually enough. A couple of cardboard boxes with a single hole cut out will give them a little privacy and an easy entrance to defend. The young cat should be easy enough to distract to allow the older cat to get a bit of rest away from them.

    We brought home two new rescued kittens at around four weeks old. Our other cat (around a year old) is pinning down both the female and male and biting them on the front of thier neck. They always run away and hide after this where our older cat can't get them. Our older cat is neutered but the kittens aren't neutered or spayed. Is our older cat trying to murder the kittens? Also before any questions the mother isn't there to keep them safe. They are abandoned kittens found under a tree if anyone wants to know so please don't say we shouldn't have taken them in at four weeks. They would have died. Thanks for reading this and any advice is greatly needed and appreciated. We don't think this is play.

    I have one Bengal/Tabby that's 1year old and a ragdoll kitten. They play fight but it's always the Bengal engaging and wrestling etc or chasing the kitten. At times the ragdoll hides under the table or bed, they never swap, never the ragdoll engaging or chasing. Is it normal that one is more dominant? Doesn't always seem mutual considering the Bengal is way more active.

      Same problem here. Probably your comment is the only comment I found among the tons which fits our situation, and have watched many many videos and articles to figure the situation out with my cats😂they are siblings , male , female turning 3 in a few days and I got concerned about their "play".. i first thought they fight but it can be eliminated because there is no sound, however the female doesnt seem to like it and seems irritated, defensive and running away from him... that is why i thought they didnt get along, but it turns out i never actually thought about the scenario you just described: one of them wanna start to play but the other one is not interested... your comment helped me understanding that they dont fight, however just one of them feels like playing🤔but i dont know if we should just leave it like this, it is irritation of the moment or should it be treated🤔

    This makes a bit more sense. I have two cats who are siblings (brother and sister). As far as I know the only time that I know to intervene is when the sister is constantly getting pinned and when she starts meowing/howling/hissing (she mainly squeaks quietly when she's her friendly normal self). Sometimes I don't know if the brother is just playing too rough or they're actually fighting.

    • @SecretAgentBartFargo

      Haley Raiford If the fighting is serious, you would hear a significant change in vocalizations in both cats. The cats would be screaming at one another and then you should immediately separate them before one hurts the other.

    thank you for this, this was _EXTREMELY_ helpful. i think my two cats must be playing then. they're both males, one is a year and a few months old the other is a kitten. we got the kitten recently cause our previous cat, who was older than the one year old, was sadly killed by a dog two months ago. it was incredibly heart breaking and sent the family in a downward spiral. i took it rather hard and got drunk the day she passed. but anyway, sorry shouldnt go on about that, anyhow, both the older cat and new cat were introduced to each other yesterday and we've been letting the younger one come out only a couple hours at a time giving the older one a break. ive just witnessed the older grooming the younger just now, but then went back to bitting and kicking at each other, but heard no growls and no hisses, and most the time their ears were up. the little one did make some meows every now and then, it that the older just being a little rough when playing? i s'pose so, im not sure. the deceased cat never got along with the one year old. she wouldnt hurt him but she would growl and hiss. and i think we only _really_ got the kitten because he looks strikingly like her. same colour same fur pattern, only real difference is her has longer socks on three of his legs. she had short socks on all of her legs

I was kinda worried bc they’re both really sweet and never fought (mainly bc they stay in separate rooms) so when they’d act like this after feeding time I took it as them fighting even tho there’s no hissing. We have a 3 year old female and 1 year old male we adopted together a few months ago. They bonded immediately and spend a couple hours a day doing exactly this (with the addition of lots of running up and down the hallway and pouncing on each other). My favorite is when they're mutually grooming, and the male indicates he wants to play by biting her on the head lol. It must not hurt because she just lays there with this long-suffering expression like, "Eh, boys, what are you going to do?" I wonder if she maybe had kittens earlier in her life because she's so patient with his antics.
