Yeah, I just don't understand people that do that. If you HAVE to leave your cat or dog, I pray you don't, at least let them be in a position where they can escape. If they aren't trapped, they will get away and they will be spared.

I’m 67 and live alone and my 14 year old German Shepherd is my constant companion. At this point in my life I would rather perish with her than leave her. Saying that I don’t have threats more than tornadoes where I live. We won’t have wildfires or floods. We’ve been through a tornado together but just my roof was damaged. I’ve got enough put back to help my family and a few neighbors. I can’t afford to lose the meat in my freezer because I’m on a fixed income and everything is tight. I too buy my meat usually after the holidays. Everyone’s situation is going to be different but my dog is as cherished as my child, since my children are all grown. My freezer is the main thing I want to keep going in a grid down situation. The way I see it, I’d only need to run the freezer an hour or so a day. I have a gas generator and a solar power energy bank. I plan on charging the energy bank with the gas generator if there is no sun. It charges in an hour. We can’t plan for everything but I’ve tried my best. Our power is usually out in winter so fridges and freezers are no problem then. Thank you! You’ve been giving the best down to earth tips I’ve seen on the internet.

I understand what you are saying. My kids are grown I would make sure my husband is ok….I think at this point in my life I would rather die trying to save my dogs. I’m ok if I don’t make it. I feel that God will keep me alive if that’s his will. I would try and save another human I would save them if I could first but if it’s just me and my dogs….Im good to go. I’ve had enough of this world but it’s God’s call. I did my job I buried my dad, he’s safe.

I lived through Charley ( 2004) through others ( until 2019) and FEMA was ALWAYS present post- hurricane. Local government agencies are there immediately. FEMA is there within the week. The difference, I think, is they respond much more quickly if they know, in advance, that a crisis will occur.

i agree. listen to her people. i livebin florida. by june 1st all my prepping is basically done by this date. i make sure to double up on the water and my cat food and cat litter. when i had a dog i made sure i had plenty of dog food as well. i shop at sams. and get several packages of tp and paper towels (yes i use the paper towels). when my son was alive he made sure we had plenty of charcoal and lighter fluid and we always had 2 grills one for us and one to help neighbors. to eat now that my son has passed from stage 5 kidney disease. i now go to my brothers house and he is all prepped and ready for emergency situations. all this extra prepping doesnt have to be crazy expensive if u prep a little with each grocery trip. and she is right abt making sure u survive when things happen. i love my cats. they r my family but. i cant take care of them if im dead. i had to leave them with hurricane milton and they were ok. when i got home from my brothers house. preach it tawra u r so right. people u need to prep prep prep. its common sense. bc shes right.

You know what started me prepping? In 1993 I read the little house series to my kids. In the Long Winter Pa didn't stock up on food. For the first time he took it easier and thought he'd get food from stores via trains and the trains never came. That's when I decided I couldn't depend on anyone else.

I had a German friend while living in Scandinavia who was a little girl at the time of WW2. Her father was a Dr. and they were running from the enemy, having to find food in fields to survive. Many people, even if they prep, could find themselves in a situation like my friend.

I love all animals, I will do anything for them except put our lives in danger. I 100% agree with you in case of emergency I've instructed my 2 daughters (8 and 5 yrs old) to NEVER stay back because they are trying to save our cat. If the house is on fire, we need to get out and leave the door open in hopes that our cat follows. Of course if there's time to catch her and put her in her carrier and take her with then OF COURSE we will do that, but if there's no time, WE are top priority and like you said, most likely the cat will survive. I pray we are never in this situation.
I felt the need to share my thoughts. Thanks for talking about this. - Lety From Chicago

I had to leave a cat when we lost our home and town to fire in California. He looked at me and ran up the street. I had two other cats, two large dogs, and my daughter who was home sick. The first thing I did was lock the cat door so the missing cat wouldn't come back in to be trapped in a burning house. Then crated and loaded the animals we could get into the car. Grabbed go bags and some pictures. Also had documents and food for everyone. The missing cat was found three months later and flown to us in another state where we found housing.

I survived. You are very encouraging to me and your mother. I will keep you in our prayers.

      @irony11 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes, you can out freezer items outside if it is below freezing. Remember that most freezers are kept at 0°F or below you still have to realize the temperature of the food outside. Also, refrigerator items may freeze so adjust that by what you store the food in while outside.

I'd you lose power and it's cold out, you should be OK with leaving your freezer closed and things being OK. The freezer in your fridge may be the exception, and then yes, Boxing those items up and placing them out in sub Temps, they will be fine. The flip side is, the amount of items in the fridge freezer is probably not worth the worry. Use it up first.

During the Great Depression it was awful. My grandmothers canned all they grew. My grandfather was a bee keeper and they had honey. Chickens for eggs. Very hard times
My grandma said they lived in a small town with the railroad going through and men looking for jobs would ride the rails. She said many times a men would knock on the door and say he was hungry. She asked him to sit on the porch and she gave the men whatever she had in the kitchen and packed them a bag for their next meal. Maybe all she had was eggs and biscuits and gravy. She told me to never turn someone away who said they were hungry.
In September of 2019 I felt strongly impressed to store food but my husband said no. Every time I went to the store I just felt so strongly about stocking up on toilet paper. I had toilet paper to the ceiling of the garage twice and then Covid hit. I have IBS and was so glad I “listened” to the prompting of the spirit.
I was able to supple family, friends and neighbors with TP when it could not be found in the stores.

A safe place to stay is paramount..as a 36 yr resident of SoCal (fire country) I've seen fire across the road..up the hill and had fire bombers so close to our roof you could see the pilots' . faces..
    Gotta have pet carriers ACCESSIBLE..
    Gotta have cars gassed up.
lengthy power outages? COOK frozen foods..be prepared to donate..
It saddens me to see piles of stuff and people wandering around, because a person suddenly homeless, cannot carry around a case of water..they need a warm place to sleep . And a PLACE to keep those donated goods..
Also BEFORE the storm, put important papers in a safe deposit box...
Churches know these displaced families and they also know other nearby churches.
people need to step up and temporarily "adopt" newly homeless...away from the devastation ...the onsite workers NEED the affected people to be elsewhere..there's no power, no roads, no safe water, no house, no phone access, nowhere to bathe, no easy bathroom facilities ...it's a warzone..

Here in rural East Central Georgia we had 7 days without power. My daughter never needed the preps I offered because for about 4 days she was pulling the thawing items from the fridge and off the top of her chest freezer. (She’s a prepper too just of the more time consuming to cook healthy staples type) She used her camp propane stove outside and my butane single burner inside. After four days hauling water my son-in-law bought a generator because he was spending all his time hauling water not just for 10 people but for cows.

You are sooooo right about the pets! Here in Kansas, in tornado alley, when we have had to run to the storm shelter due to a tornado warning, we don’t bring the pets. We love them, but the dogs are big, and we could lose our lives trying to get them into the shelter. They are smart. They will run away from dangerous situations. Luckily, we have never lost our home, and the dogs are sitting there wagging their tails when we return from the cellar. It’s stupid to take my children’s parents and my grandkids grandparents away from them because of an animal…even though we love our dogs, we love the kids and grandkids more and want to stay alive and be with them for as long as possible.

I know a Women that has a lot, a lot of land and ranch in or outside of Sheridan. I think she also owned several buildings in town and I believe a antique/resale store. She would live 1/2 the year hear in MO outside of St. Louis. She also ownes a lot of land in our town. She was diagnosed with cancer and came back to get treatments here. She had a nurse that administered chemo at her home. I have been worried about her and also her land in WY. I found out tonight that she passed away yesterday. Iv'e been hoping none of her ranch had been affected. I was going to take her floweres and sit with her today. You may have known her. Her name was Christy Love. In many situations people can move to safe ground and live in their vehicles and/or keep a tent/essential camping gear, in their car to sit up for an emergency. Their pet can live with them in their car and tent. One can keep a tether, harness, leash etc, water bowl, pet items in their car at all times in case something like this is needed it will be readily available. Plan ahead for your pet just as you would for yourself and your family. ETA As someone said below, keep a pet carrier near or in back of car as well. Keep gas levels full if possible at all times. These are such simple measures that can save precious minutes and make it possible to protect your pet as well as yourself which might be otherwise impossible if not for your preplanning and preparation.

I agree 100% with the pet issue. I have a dog and my daughter who lives with me right now has a little dog. They are loved like family. But when we have tornado warnings and my daughter is not home, she always tells me to take her dog with me to the hallway to be safe from a possible tornado. I tell her all the time that I am not taking the dogs with me. There’s no way to keep them there and in that situation I feel like the dogs probably know how to hide and be safer than what I could make them. She doesn’t agree with that but I tell her she doesn’t like it she can come home and take care of her dog.

I'll add that it can be extremely difficult to get elderly people to leave their homes. I remember seeing a story on the news about issues with seniors who flatly refused to evacuate, even in a flooded house. Normalcy bias is very strong. I had a huge problem convincing my mom to evacuate to my sister's place for a few days. Sis was the only one with power. Yeah, it didn't work out well. We'd never seen her exhibit that kind of behavior in our lives. Like a toddler in a non-stop temper tantrum and my sister and I were the Enemy. Fun times.

If you plan properly, then you won't have to leave your pet. If someone feels that their pets are not worth saving, then those are people that should not have pets because they aren't responsible pet owners. I would say that about kids also. Don't have them if you can't protect them with your life.

Totally agree with what you are saying about pets. Flooding will never be our issue, grass fires are. And a prairie grass fure moves like lightning. Our dog is glued to my hubby's side, so she will come with us. If we can, but its not likely, if we can cut fences to let the cows go, fine. But, if they die, they are insured. The cats are on their own and the horses are more than able to jump the fences if they have to.
We are one of those rare people that have 4 freezers and there is about a thousand bucks worth of meat and veggies in them. We do have a gen set just for the shop where they are and a gen set for the house. If we lose power for any length of time we are good. But if its a grass fire that takes the house and shop, I'm ok with letting it all go. That is what we have insurance for. We havs all our important paperscandhotos on flash drives, as well as photos of everything of value with serial numbers on a fladh drive in a safety deposit box at the bank. If we cant get back to the house for our bugout bags, so be it. We are out of here. Nothing, if you are prepared or not, is worth risking your life for!

I'm so frustrated with my family. We have a severe weather alert for high winds and we're all on firewatch (California) I've let everyone know...we've had plenty of warning. They don't take these things seriously at all. They have no water stored and very little food in the house since they eat out everyday, sometimes twice a day. I've made a 72 hour kit for my son who keeps it to humor me.
I live in a Campervan so I'm probably going to roll on down the road away from the weather WITH my preps and whoever wants to join me 😅 I'm whistling while topping off the charge on all my devices, reusable batteries, power stations, rechargeable lights. Simply gotta roll by my storage unit for my solar/12V fridge and then I'm heading to the beach 😂

I can't imagine leaving my cat cause the guilt would set in, which is why when we have pets we need to make sure we plan for their evacuation also. Anyone with a dog has a leach and anyone with a cat has a carrier. If you know for 1 tiny second that you may have to evacuate, then make sure you have a plan to evacuate all of them. Yes, animals are definitely much smarter than people and have a much higher chance on surviving. I definitely get that. I always figured hypothetically if I saw a child and a dog in a river struggling, even though I like animals over kids I would help the child because the dog is much smarter than a child is and their chances on survival is much much higher. Helping the dog, the child may drown. But helping the child, they both may survive. It's always good to play those in your head so you know the best thing to do if you ever got into a situation similar. So it's good to realize that animals usually can fend for themselves if they have to. Hopefully you never have to make a hard decision like that but yes, they usually survive fires, floods, ect. Just make sure if you do evacuate and you have to leave them, keep a door or window open for them to get out so they aren't trapped. Them being trapped is what will cause their demise. But yes, planning will be what will save everyone including your pets.
