This game was developed by Namco and Project Soul, as you can see it resulted in a lot of animations being similar to TEKKEN. I haven't played Soul Calibur in a while, so I can't comment on that regard.
It's surprisingly fun, I'm surprised by how in-depth it actually is, especially for a Beat Em Up from 2004. I found the game to be quite difficult though, especially the last 4 missions.

About Urban Reign :
Urban Reign (アーバンレイン?) is a multiplayer Fighting\Beat 'em up game developed by Namco in the tradition of famous "Beat 'em" up games like Final Fight, River City Ransom, and Double Dragon. The game has a very strong multiplayer component. Its fighting engine was influenced by Power Stone, Tobal 2 and Ehrgeiz. The game also features two characters from the Tekken series of games, Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law, as unlockables.
The plot of Urban Reign follows the exploits of "brawler-for-hire" Brad Hawk, who is hired by the scantily clad swords-woman Shun Ying Lee to find a kidnapped gang member. Brad fights his way through the street gangs of Green Harbor, a fortified city in the U.S.. As he does so to get some answers, the true machinations of the protagonists reveal themselves and things become more complicated.
This game was so much fun in 4 player mode brawl. Always wanted them to make a sequal or a spiritual successor someday.

This game is my second favourite beat em up of all time after GodHand, never really found any other beat em up that “feels” as good as this one

@@IamPang @IamPang Hmmm......thats a pretty tough question, I havent finished Urban reign multiple times to be sure, the last time i finished it was like 10 years ago, and since then i just play go back to it to play some levels and everytime i try to finish i get distracted by other things lol, but I played Godhand way more, But i would go with Godhand, I would have went with Urban if the reversal mechanics(Square) had to be timed in order to execute, because when i first played the game, i thought it had to be time so i always thought it was hard but i only recenytly discovered it wasnt, but it still hard tho, but back in the day, this game kicked my ass like no tomorrow, But I guess Godhand takes but only by an inch because the level of difficulty between the two games are pretty close and almost tied, But i guess it depends on the CPU difficulty level, I mean if everyone is on hardest, Urban reign is unbeatable unlike godhand, Shit nvm i have to go back and play the later levels of urban reign to know for sure, but I guess it depends which day of the week you ask me, sometimes ill say Godhand, sometimes ill say Urban reign.
But definatelly play Godhand, its ass kicking and addictive.

Man we need a remaster or a remake of this game , wish there was a way to make it happen . Such an underrated game with beautiful mechanics , imagine how well it would do in the tournaments , perhaps 2 v 2 even.

A streamer I watch occasionally puts this game on CPU vs CPU matches and turns on channel point betting, because just watching this game's unfair AI go in on itself is incredibly hype in short bursts, turns out.

In my opinion Vera is better as a grappler than Jake in a competitive setting. Chain throws for days
Her Arcana unlocks a huge number of grapples for her, more than even Jake's.
I only semi agree. Her body damage can go higher but she is much more fragile in exchange for that.

There's a lot of data in the game that shows the campaign was supposed to be designed with co-op in mind. That's why it's hard, and it was almost complete, too. All it was missing was split screen. Coulda been the best couch co-op of it's year.

As a urban reign fan, i find it so much relatable to all the quirks (bad AI design) in the game... quirks like that adds some extra fun while playing it with my pals. Also i don't mind them at all though while playing because the game is very much tactics based which i never found any other games.

Remember the last boss is the only person who thought to use a gun. Like the meekest guy is now deadlier than golem cuz somehow no one else thought to bring a gun. It not like they don't wanna kill you cuz they'll stab and cut you.
What do you mean by "bad AI design"? The AI alone is most interesting part of the game and the reason I find most beat em up enemies dull.

It's like these game developers wanted to showcase how good they are at Tekken engine the way they throw in those difficult boss fights at only first quarter of the game. Even fighting Jinpachi from Tekken 5 felt less cheap than Jake 😂

Games like this, were my all time favorite. I played so much cuz loved the battle arena style , more than the typical 2d fighters. This so needs a reboot or remaster, with online fighting

It's been a while so I don't remember exactly how, but I just followed the setting of a YTber called xTimelessGaming and checked the PCSX2's wiki compatibility page for the game.
It runs on 480i by default, you can press "Triangle+Circle" right before the main screen (Press any button to start) appears then the game will boot up in 480p. I wish they made this an option in the menu instead.

You do have air grabs, just hit grab while they're juggled, that's doing a Left/Right strike combo as brad.

I tried this game not too long ago. It was cool as hell but also hard as hell. The thing that made me quit was all the enemies straight up ignoring my attacks. And Jake. I got to the Jake fight and just quit lol. I suck at reversing grabs.
Having completed this only a few months ago,god it's fucking annoying,Getting unblockable chain comboed by multiple enemies so bad you might as well just put the controller down because you literally can't do a thing.
So it wasn't just me, I thought I was just super bad at the game lmao

I vaguely remember playing this game as a kid and not knowing what the hell I was doing lmao I was intimidated by this game that I told myself that I would play it when I got older. Guess I need to buy a ps2 somewhere and also a copy of this game because nostalgia calls!
You'd be better off emulating it, the game sold below to 20k units, so the price is probably in triple digits for the disc alone.
With Emulation you can play with Widescreen fixes and at a higher resolution.

While the game is good, the stun locking bs was so outrageous in this game. Literally when the enemy ai pushes you to a wall, you immediately put into a 8 second stun state.
I am not kidding because this happened against the three kadonashi karate fighters and while at full health and full green body, the Zach karate character just pushed brad against a wall and was immediately placed in an 8 second stun! At full health.
And don’t even get me started with the mushin Kai and shadow platoon characters with their 2 frame low kick or backhand movesets from Tekken Miguel/King because they will constantly spam this attack that just puts you in a stun loop where you can never ever counter them. Especially when it’s a 4 v 1 with you being the single fighter. Playing this game against fighters is like fighting 5 Kazuya Mishimas who spam Abolsihing Fist that guarantees stuns. Or 5 kings who spam the Stagger Kick. In fact, I’d say the whole game was like fighting 10 King, Miguel, or Craig Marduk who uses the same low kick moves with no low parry command

I had a lot of good times with this game. Some of the moves made it out of this at least. Playing on emulation is kinda sucky compared to the console though since pcsx2 has some wonky latency at default audio settings.
