Big part of the reason does not pick up on Pen being whistledown is because he is actually in his own head about her not feeling the same as he does! I also was sitting there wondering how the man had not put it together however I did a rewatch with his POV largely in mind and I realized SOOOO much about his character and why he does/says the things he does. In ep 4/5 and some of 6, all he has heard from Pen is that she would like to be more than friends. If u go back and try to act like you dont know about whistledown, everytime Colin brings up commitment and marriage, Pen looks like she is freaking out. When he gives that speech at the engagement party, he is talking about how he cant wait to spend their lives together and she looks stressed as shit. He brings up marriage later on in the same party and she disappears only to come back having a panic attack. He quite literally says "if we are moving too fast we can call off the engagement" because he has no idea what she is feeling. There is a scene where he is struggling to write, and after the scene in the church when he finally is reassured about her feelings for him the man is writing novels lmaooo. The church scene is the first time she actually says anything other than that she wants to be more than friends. So I personally did like the season, although all the conflict being backloaded into part 2 does feel jarring. One thought on Penelope-as-Whistledown being core to her identity though… what writer only writes one thing their entire life? Why is it so hard or wrong for her to give it up? It’s like, OK, it’s getting dangerous, the feud with the Queen is getting too hot, maybe time to wrap up Whistledown and start a new project. Colin gives that whole speech about reading her letters - “you are her!” - but the more I think about it, the more that speech has the opposite to intended effect on me, like she has this great voice even when just writing as herself, so maybe let the pen name die… Like, I get not wanting Cressida to take any credit for it, that does make sense to me, but I feel like Eloise has a completely valid point asking Penelope to let the gossip column go. The more I think about it the less I like that the show takes the opposite stance, like that it’s wrong or cruel or disempowering of Penelope for her to have to give it up. We often have to give up things we want to do even in 2024, that’s just how life works out sometimes. 🤨
YES!!! That's exactly what I thought when Eloise suggests Pen to let go LW....and if I remember correctly, she kind of considerates it .... until she speaks to the modist. In the book it made sense she didn't want Cressida to take credit for her more than 10 years of work, in the show the LW column started 2 years before (on the bridgerton show timeline) so it was ridiculous that the LW drama was dragged for too long.
Also I didn’t even realize it until now, when I came back and got to this part of the video, but it’s a whole thing in the Mondrich plot that they have to come to terms with closing the club, which feels very realistic and sympathetic, but they take the complete opposite stance with Penelope.
@@pro-choicemom - I didn’t say she should give up writing though. In my original post I asked the rhetorical question, “what writer only writes one thing [column/publication] their entire life?” Penelope seems to be an extremely talented writer even when writing as herself - not hiding behind a pen name - which is the “opposite to intended” meaning that I took from Collin’s speech about her letters in episode 8, i.e. they read just as clever, snarky, perceptive, insightful as Whistledown. So why keep the pen name and gossip column going when she could move on to start a play, maybe on the emotional trauma of a debutante struggling in the marriage mart, or a periodical, maybe a monthly art and literature critique (she’d get to pepper in all the witty barbs on bad reviews!), or a novel, maybe a counterpart to Colin’s travelogue focusing on female perspectives? Honestly, in some sense it’s actually discrediting / selling her short to say that Penelope should just keep pumping out the Society Papers in perpetuity - either as Whistledown or as herself - never branching out to other genres or literary formats.
It probably would have made more sense if what was delivered at the ball was Cressida's LW issue, then Eloise's reaction/Pen's completely lack of secrecy would be more understandable. I feel like there had to be a scene that was cut between Cressida & Eloise. I don't like most of the actions Eloise takes in part 2. She shouldn't have ruined their engagement party. Then she shouldn't have convinced Pen not to tell him, it was to big a thing to keep secret. Finally in this episode, she seems to finally take responsibility for her part in Penelope writing about her but she never fully explains it to Colin. She also makes things worse by being such a poor friend to Cressida. I suppose it all happens this way in service of the dramatic story thay are going for but I wish we saw more of POLIN together, without this secret hanging over them
I know this isn’t one of the best episodes, but I can’t help but love it because of certain scenes like the reading of the banns, the Mondrich Botanical Ball was beautiful but the ominous “Confident” on strings had me on the edge with excitement cause I knew everything was about to fall apart for Pen lol. And Cressida walking in with that iconic red dress was a chef’s kiss for me. I remember the first time I watched it and Colin emerges from the darkness to confront Pen/Lady Whistledown, omg I was screaming and hiding my face from the TV LOL I couldn’t even look!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Side note Miatta, your blue eyeshadow is absolutely beautiful!!!
I was annoyed with how late they started the drama in Part1 and how many lack luster episodes there were in Part2.... They didn't utilize their time wisely this season 😒 I wanted Cressida to beg anyone with power to help her out of that horrible home situation. It wasn't ever going to be Eloise. I was also hoping Lord Dubling* would spin the block on her! It didn't and 🍅🍅🍅🍅 lol There wasn't enough ANGST, DISTRESS, DRAMA AND TENSION!
You articulated why I felt dissatisfied with some of these storylines - they didn't feel earned! Lady Danbury harboring so much anger for her 10 year old brother's actions after setting it up to be something huge was a letdown. It was also a misdirect because why was she going on about him being a rake? The tension between Violet and Francesca was confusing until I realized it was all in service of what happens in the last few minutes of the season, which is another baffling issue. They've always made Violet do whatever is needed to create drama at the cost of her character and backstory. One minute she says Edmund and her had been friends for a long time and the next she says she was speechless when she first met him! Eloise dropping Cressida like a hot potato when she is at her most vulnerable is the most infuriating thing for me. The least she could've done was provide comfort! What has Cressida done to her till this point which causes that outburst of anger? This just proves that Eloise doesn't know how to be a friend to any woman. She dismisses their passions (her reaction to the debutante's hobby) and problems all while claiming to care for women's rights. I hope all this is setting her up to have a massive self-realization during her season (similar to Pen's this season) or all this would end up as very bad writing.
Eloise is a bad friend! I ready for her to get some character development in Scotland. Still love the actress and character, she’s complex like Penelope 🤝
The thing I noticed about Colin in part 2 is that he's never quite sure if she is thinking that they're making a mistake. Because she's basically freaking out the whole second half. He mistakes the LW panic for cold feet. They really did try to shove too much in this part of the season. Seems like choppy editing and incomplete scenario writing. Still loved the season, but they could have made it waaaaaay better.
I think the thing about Whistledown's power is that they have shown it in previous seasons, just not this one. In previous seasons, WD's power is evident; In season 1 she named Daphne as the diamond because she of the queen's favor and then directly goes against the queen by saying she made a mistake and that the real diamond was Marina. The effect of this is huge, as Marina now becomes the incomparable almost overnight. She then causes Berbrooke to be cast out of society almost immediately by writing one single sentence in her column. In season two, she saves Eloise from the queen's wrath by ruining her, which is another show of the power she holds in her column. It makes sense given Penelope's entire arc this season is that she is growing by realizing her past mistakes, but I think this season could have benefitted greatly from a scene where Penelope uses whistledown to change someone's fate, perhaps in a more positive way given her growth. They could have tied Cressida's arc into Pen's, and have her write something in her favour after Pen realizes the position Cressida was in and why she did what she did. I have my suspicions that they want to do something more with Cressida's character in the next seasons, which is why they maybe took the route they did. They definitely could have done things better in this regard. I do think that Eloise freaking out is warranted however. She invited Cressida into her home, giving her a direct insight into her family and their issues. She is the one who convinced Pen to stop writing and let Cressida take credit, so anything Cressida says in the fake Whistledown issue would indirectly be a result of her actions. The implication was that Cressida would never write an issue, so when Eloise finds out that she is planning on releasing one, Eloise's mind goes to worst case scenario. Cressida taking blows at the Bridgertons (bc they fought) being that scenario. This turns out to be the exact thing that happens beginning of next episode. I think the opening of next episode is actually a great scene in regards to the power of Whistledown, because when both issues are being read you can immediately see that although WD has written bad stuff, she never deals in speculation. It makes you realize that Pen has been slowly growing into an understanding of the effect she can have with her pen, and that if she wrote the way Cressida did, the power of WD can be used to plant speculation about things that are entirely untrue. Again, while i do think that Pen has misused her power, she has NEVER lied. Lies like the ones Cressida and her mom printed are much more dangerous and much worse than truths printed in protection of a friend, or truths in general for that matter.
Colin showed up without prior notice so she didn't know he would be there. She should have thought to wash her hands before she went down but she probably "panic'd", a bit, when she heard he was downstairs. She blew it, to be sure, but he was a surprise visit, so I'm not too dubious.
Eloise is a brat. I enjoy Pen, and yeah, she's done some dirty work. But the Bridgerton's are all self-absorbed that they never truly knew Pen, even though she was right in front of them, especially eloise. Eloise is doing the same thing she did to Pen, to Cressida. Not listening and talking at her.
I liked this episode, but I totally agree about not enough Luke and Nicola in their own season! Come on now! Love your reactions. She already has a bun in that oven sister (loved that reaction). You all are so right about Violet being the best. And Mrs. Featherington isn't perfect but she does the best for her girls for sure, tots agree!
So on the topic of mothers since that's where I'm at in this video but portia and violet for me are on opposite sides of motherly affection and so there are both good and bad yk because there are 3 huge things required from a parent 1. Protection and support in times of actual difficulty and danger 2. Love ,affection, trust and nurturing 3. Education on reality and life With violet she has Always provided number 2 and tried her absolute best to give number 3 but was always far too fanciful to actually be of help and when it comes to number 1 she has always failed portia is the exact opposite she has failed at number 2 but always come through for number 1 and in number 3 she was very similar to violet but much better cuz while violet was too optimistic portia was too pessimistic. My point is where violet fails portia excells and where portia fails violet excells so they're both good and bad mothers depending on the situation.
Its the writers. Its just the bad writing. This wasn't my favorite book but the show's rewrites are so much worse and lack any real context. All of it is forced and none of it is earned. More on that in the finale when I lose my shit over the Franny/Michael/Michaela turn. But for this season and Cressida... if they wanted to open her character up with context and background than they failed because her life conflict is pretty simple, she needs to get married OR she needs to find a way to financially support herself if she chooses not to marry or cannot find a match. She is white, privileged pretty girl who would normally be married regardless of her shitty personality BUT the show needs her stuck in this position and its useless to the show's progression. Just leave her as she is in the books because the writers didn't know what to do with her. Why didn't she continue pursuing Debling? Or any other suitor? Why did they position Eloise as the person that isn't helping Cressida when Eloise can't help her. What she needs is direction and maybe for her to move to another areas of England to find a husband.
I must be the only one who loved ep 6-8 more than ep 1-6😅. 1-5 were a snoozefest for me. I really love Pen but couldn't get into the Polin romance because Colin isnt interesting to me at all. I enjoyed the later episodes more because I got to have a Pen and rest of her fam storyline and that sadly was more enjoyable to me than Polin.
The Queen doesn't call her dumb, she calls her self centered. Everybody else calls her dumb!!😂😂😂 Frans story with John mirrors Pen and Deblin. She does love him but knows it is different from every other love she sees around her. When she is looking at her mom I do not think she is envious or wants that attention because they say on mutiple occasions that is not her thing. Fran tracks behavior her emotional intelligence is Next Fockin Level!! In that moment I think she is contemplating how to get her mom to talk to the Queen. Because the next time we see her she is pushing about her mom talking to the Queen and for the first time she tells her mom she loves him. And again she acknowledges it is not the same as everyone else. Fran is my favorite book. Pen is my favorite character in the show so this season makes me happy. Even though I know it has issues and lots of people are not happy.😂😂😂😂
They did Colin dirty. We don't get to see him really piecing together LW, we don't get to know him in any true sense, he is made a side character. Season 1 and 2 make you understand their lead males and what makes them tick and you don't get any of that with Colin and it is such a shame! There are so many holes and missed opportunities in this season, so many unnecessary storylines. So frustrating. I highly recommend checking out Sammy Bates Colin Bridgeton's character analysis on TH-cam. It helps make the crumbs were are given a little more bearable. Loved your thoughts and perspectives! ❤
Love the reactions! ❤ My take is that I am so fed up with people who are quick to call Eloise a bad friend when literally Pen was a bad friend to her in the first place. The hit piece she wrote about Eloise last season, the news about Colin & Marina, and her talking badly about the failed wedding between Anthony & Edwina last season all prove to how bad of a friend Pen was to Eloise to make her upset. People seem to simply ignore all the things Pen has done to Eloise and her family, and yet have the audacity to call Eloise a brat and a bad friend?? It’s ridiculous! Don’t get me wrong I love Pen, but Eloise has every right to be upset and act the way she is this season. People are ignoring the fact that Eloise truly does care for Pen, she just needs some time to forgive her but she also needs to protect her brother’s feelings. Don’t even get me started on the people that are so up in arms about Eloise dropping Cressida as a friend 😂 I feel bad for Cressida’s unfortunate situation, however, she has always been a bully since day one before her father threatened to marry her off this season. I understand that Eloise befriended Cressida in the first place, but can you really blame her for being petty towards Pen after all the things Pen has said as Lady Whistledown? Cressida’s situation simply does not excuse her actions, it is simply the reasoning as to why she’s doing what she’s doing. Eloise has never been a bully even in her bad moments, so why would she continue to be friends with Cressida?
Penelope isnt lying, she's omitting-- Penelope was at that choice being courted away from Lord Deblin's engagement. Colin put himself in that situation.
I stop watching the series after this episode. Now I think I know why. It was such a downer and so off that I didnt want to continue. I really need to finish.
Another classic review...lol......I did enjoy the emotion between Colin and Pen when he finally clues in she is Whistledown....but I wanted more.....I do feel for Cressida (something I never thought I would say), she is truly abused and on the verge of being banished to a brutal fate with the aged one, skanky, miserable old guy...she is desperate for the that 5000 pounds so she can get the hell outta Dodge, that is the onlyreason she even bothers with the whole "I am she" m,oment.....
Let me start by saying, that I love your other Bridgerton reaction videos, BUT I’m gonna have to strongly disagree with you about episode six. There were so many romantic scenes in this episode. It was like a glimpse of what their married relationship could be if he knew about her being LW.

Not listening and talking at her.
if you think all the bridgertons are self-absorbed, then why are you watching a show that’s named after them? 😂
1:51 Me and my bestie entering the semester promising that we'll stop obsessing over semi-ugly boys
Education on reality and life
With violet she has Always provided number 2 and tried her absolute best to give number 3 but was always far too fanciful to actually be of help and when it comes to number 1 she has always failed portia is the exact opposite she has failed at number 2 but always come through for number 1 and in number 3 she was very similar to violet but much better cuz while violet was too optimistic portia was too pessimistic.
Everybody else calls her dumb!!😂😂😂
Frans story with John mirrors Pen and Deblin.
40:56 Your faces 😂😂😂😂
Love the viewer discretions lol
I stop watching the series after this episode. Now I think I know why. It was such a downer and so off that I didnt want to continue. I really need to finish.
You have to watch just so you can see their reactions to the rest of the episodes 😂
7 and 8 are really good!
I never did a video but I'm going publish one on how S3 failed (imho) Despite everyone rooting for it to succeed
Honestly looking forward to it because I felt decieved hahaha :')
Definitely need more Polin!
lmao the way this was my favorite episode from part 2😅 might def be an unpopular opinion
100%
your husband sounds incredible. we would be great pals. my man would never but i so would do the same thing and have lol. #teamromantics
Billie woodruff was the director of this episode. I do agree that it could have had more drama.
Can you guys do Bton Season 2 together
Let me start by saying, that I love your other Bridgerton reaction videos, BUT I’m gonna have to strongly disagree with you about episode six. There were so many romantic scenes in this episode. It was like a glimpse of what their married relationship could be if he knew about her being LW.
Episodes 3 and 6 were the worst ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
