The things we had to do back then in Brazil to be able to play a simple game, right? People in the US or EU will never know how hard (and expensive) it was for the average brazilian to be a gamer.

I'm from argentina but... pretty much the same yeah. It is crazy how different the access to 'entertainment' hardware was, especially for gaming. I can say, with full honesty, as akid that was born in 82, I never seen an original NES anywhere. All we had (and this was in the early 90ies) was 'Famiclones' aka famicom clones, so we had famicom carts gallore, none in boxes, all sold as is. I had a rather interesting one, a pal famiclone shaped like... a super famicom, including the control shape. I only ever saw 1 snes in my life, and it was on a videogame store I was friends with the owners. (up to the early 2000s, all that was around was famiclones, playstation 1, and sega genesis for the most part)

I live in europe. Thou till 1991 my country was part of cccp... All we had was famiclones and chinese bootleg cartridges... You atleast got english roms... when in here we mostly got roms in japanese... And there was other fun stuff, like Turtles 3... Most roms were with copyright active, meaning game was on extra hard mode (enemys have double hp and shredder.. you can beat him for hours, he has unlimited hp so he couldent care less, lol).
And even those famiclones cost a lot.
They showed up somewhere in very end of 80-s/start of 90-s and was something You may get for christmas or birthday if lucky.

CCE, the company that made my NES/Famiclone, released some games in Argentina, they had this "Turbo Game" logo on them. The same art used in Brazil was used there, but with texts in Spanish. I wish I had some of those so I could show, I think about making a video about CCE releases in the future, it would be awesome to cover some Argentinian stuff also.

Fantastic stuff! The main story of the bootleg itself and how skipping level 2 was actually a workaround to avoid MMC crashing issues was great, it makes sense once you were able to sleuth out what was going on, but I love how you only discovered that by sticking with the investigation and didn't just write it off as degraded hardware or a simple programming bug. The TapeDump method of ROM dumping though, is utterly fascinating stuff! Not so much that it's using the tape medium for data, like a lot of old PCs, but that someone was clever enough to think of implementing that as a cheap way to dump ROMs without dedicated dumping hardware.
I love when people use old technology to solve new problems, such as how DSL was a good hack of the local loop in the old telephone network to get low broadband speeds into homes without needing to build out new infrastructure on the customer's end of the loop. Also kind of reminds me of how one of Sega's copy protection layers to the Dreamcast, the lack of consumer grade GD-ROM drives in the hopes of making the games hard to dump, was defeated by using the Dreamcast's own GD-ROM drive and serial port.
I also think it's interesting that you've had kind of a Mandala effect about the 2nd level in your memories. Unless you played a different copy at a friends house somewhere along the way that had level 2 enabled, it seems pretty clear you were never able to play it on this cart as a kid. However, you having memories of level 2 blending into your old memories could almost be the subject of a whole other video itself. Our brains are such interesting and weird things.
    Thanks for sharing, cheers!

Actually when I was a kid, I played this game on a russian clone of nes called Dendy. My cartridge was a 3 in 1 and somehow those, who hacked it spoiled this game with some unforgiving bugs: playing it was a walk on a mine field, because any wrong jump or hitting a wrong enemy led to black screen of death. Only the first two levels and the very last one were bugs free. So how hard it was for me to evercome this spoiled masterpiece? Take a hard game and multiply the difficulty by 10. I had to replay it from the beggining thouthands times. Learning each pixel of each level, finding all possible warp zones on my own (yeah, I had never heard of the internet back then), cause some parts of some levels where simply impassible, for example finishing the turbo tunnel always led to black screen of death, so the only way to get pass it, was entering the warp zone just before the end of the level. And remember, I never knew warp zone existed. So I went into it by mare luck and when I got to the ice level, I thought I was dreaming, cause this just could've been real... And that was only beginning, there were tonns of places where the game could just freeze forever... Ice cavern and Snakes were impassible without getting to warp zone... After all the struggle and despair, after long years of learning and try and errors I finnaly got to the Dark Queen and beat the hell out of her! When I finally saw the final screen, It was like conquering Everest I guess, a climax of young boy's achievements. Thanks for all that nostalgia, dude, that was awesome!

It's really incredible how you dumped your game using audio signal. Because of bugs, some games do not have bootleg versions to this day, one notable example is Castlevania 3, which you can't find in those Chinese cartridges that have hundreds of games. I even tested my Akumajou Densetsu on a Dynavision 3 Xtreme and it ran fine. No glitches up to at least half of the game. In my Dynavision I noted that Double Dragon 2 would scroll the area that displays life and score with the stage scrolling, it would wrap and return to the visible area. Besides that the game can be finished without a hitch. Kirby also had a glitch where some doors would have the same color as the background making some of them invisible. These glitches did not occur on a Famicom.

Show demais o vídeo amigo!

The Ancient Ship of Doom (U) [o1]".
