  • A new offering from the Musgrave Pencil Company in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the Pencil-King pencil celebrates the discovery of some vintage steel printing dies. The Pencil-King die, believed to be from the late 1940's, is the first to be used. The pencils are painted a royal purple with a gold foil imprint. The ferrule, a bright gold color, is a triple-knurled beauty with a white eraser. Musgrave used a rich #1 core on this round-barreled pencil, which comes packed in a dozen in a handsome purple and gold tube. I was anxious to try this pencil!

Excellent review. I really want to try these out, but I am such a fan of cedar pencils that I just don't think I can do it. I am so much in love with the Tennessee Reds that I think I'll stick with them.

Thank you! While these don't have the beautiful wood of the Tennessee Reds, I find these pencils to be a real pleasure to write with. Thanks!

I just ordered these and can’t wait to give them a try. Nothing like a smooth dark pencil to write with!

$2.00 or so for a fantastic pencil isn't a stretch considering how long it will last. Good video, thanks! 🤗

Kevin, great review as always! Always Analog and Calvacade of Food are two of my favorite channels on TH-cam, so thanks for doing this! I bought a box of the Pencil King's and I'm looking forward to giving them a whirl!

I'm always disappointed when a white, latex free eraser on a pencil doesn't mean that it's as good as a pentel polymer. Loved the review, may have to order.

Hi Dave! The Pentel really sets a high bar for these white erasers, but the pencil itself was a joy to use. Thanks!

Very nice pencil. I wish it were cedar. In fact I left a message on their instagram post about it - they didn't reply of course. I still may get some. Thanks for the review!

Oh, those are magnificent! Majestic, even!
I was not aware of this new Musgrave offering; thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I particularly like the attention given to the ferrule. Vintage pencils have such a wonderful variety of ferrules, but modern pencil makers tend to keep to the same bland, uninspiring designs. These look wonderful.

Hi MAMO - I debated about whether or not to order these, but when I saw the ferrule design it convinced me to get some. I agree with the beauty of the designs of the vintage ferrules. I think you would like these!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this Vs the Harvest #1 - are they the same core?

      @AlwaysAnalog  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hi Alfred - I just did a side by side comparison of the Harvest #1 and the Pencil-King. I would say don't seem to be exactly the same. The P-K is slightly smoother and darker than the Harvest. Thanks!

So this is not a reproduction of an old pencil but an original? Looks great. Good gift for anyone who loves purple. I always appreciated the old imprints they would give pencils with different fonts, etc. I noticed they also came out with a variety pack of the Unigraph drawing pencils in it's own box.

Hi Davnet! This is an original using an old printing die. Yes, I saw that Musgrave finally came out with a variety set of the Unigraph drawing pencils! Thanks!!

I love the look and found the same issue with the eraser which was a bit disappointing.

Thanks, Paula! The eraser was the only disappointment on this pencil. Luckily, there are plenty of good block erasers to use.

I'd love to buy a tube of these, but MAN a $1.25 apiece seems steep!

Compared to other premium pencils, the price is pretty reasonable. Blackwings cost over $2.00 a piece. Thanks!

If you don't like the erasers they offer many very good untipped pencils order some hi polymer erasers that go on the end of the untipped pencils and problem solved. I agree the erasers could be better but for all their pencils but they make some super high quality pencils Tennessee reds/rounds and unigraph are my favorite. Also the test pencils were never really meant to write with just make marks the cores on those being straight isn't the highest priority. Unigraph and the Tennessee reds/ rounds you won't find many off center cores

Hi Mike - the Pentel hi polymer eraser caps are very good. I find they do a nice job and are generally much better than the attached erasers. Those Tennessee Rounds are among my favorite pencils!
