The great thing about this fight is how both sides think they are doing best for their kind. Clover is getting justice for all the humans killed, and Ceroba is getting vengeance for Starlo's death. This song encapsulates not only Ceroba's rage, but Clover's.
Meanwhile, Frisk just wants to kill everyone for no reason, and Undyne wants to destroy them because she knows that even humanity will be at risk if they survive.
I like how Flowey's stupid dialogue is genuinely helpful. She has a very strict pattern that doesn't change much, with very few attacks having altering patterns when you restart. The only one I can actually remember is the Flower that moves around and shoots, with the only thing changing is the direction it moves in.
Does the attack where flowers close in on you and then explode with orange/blue explosions have a pattern? The one in small box, not the big one. It always felt like I have to coin flip whether next explosion will be orange or blue.
0:57 I just realized how this part is literally that one part from “Enemy Retreating”, very nice attention to detail since Ceroba literally wasn’t afraid of you in this fight.
That's because Enemy Retreating is actually Clover's theme. I think somewhere in the game, someone says that "everyone hears their own song in battle", with Clover being the outlier, since he's a human. The only time that you actually hear his theme is in the Genocide Route, though, where it even bleeds a bit into other themes such as Ceroba's.

Dead family, dead friend, dead dream. Nothing to hold back, nothing to reserve for the future. Nothing left but rage and emptiness. I love how this clearly has the "Enemy Retreating" leitmotif in it. Really shows how it's the equivalent of the "Battle against a True Hero" and "Power of Neo" motif in UT genocide. Both of the motifs exude confidence. It's monsters, hopelessly but confidently resisting the unstoppable force.
That's a cool reading, though my reading has been that Enemy Retreating is Clover's theme as it's an energetic and war-like theme to their "heroic" vengeance in the form of collective punishment. And as they become the one starting the battle rather than the monsters, their theme starts taking over the battle music, including in the form of motifs in boss battle themes
This was the moment I quit genocide. No, not because I felt bad or because I was completely stuck, but because I realised this was the HALFWAY BOSS. I knew there was no shot I was getting past whatever fangame-bullshit crazy ass final boss this route had in store for me. Oh, you were absolutely correct, lol. The final boss was absolutely bullshit. I've spent so many hours on it before giving up. Although, I can brag about at least beating ceroba, i guess?
Yeah same kinda, i actually liked the fight and beated ceroba at the end, but then on martlet fight???? I tought i couldnt get worse, but it got way worse, se instead for me "you win martlet"
I didn't even bother trying genocide because I knew something like this would happen. I could barely beat pacifist Ceroba and I did NOT want to deal with the possibility of her pulling an Undyne. Plus, uh, got hit in the feels too hard to be hurting any of these characters. But mostly just not wanting to catch those hands.
Jokes aside, this song conveys how distraught and angered in, from the first chords, it’s like you can hear the despair in it.And it honestly slightly sounds like a clock ticking afterwards, whether this is intentional or not, its like conveying that her time is up. Honestly, this just sounds filled with despair and hatred.
Honestly I didn't expect her to just simply run up to you, I haven't seen a fangame where before a battle starts the opponent actually gets straight to the point! I love this game so much

Trial by fury not furry... Fury as in rage, trial by fire being trial by combat? Trial by fury, trial by combat from a person who's furious. It's just a clever play on words that sound similar not a poke at Ceroba's race-🤓
But... wasn't the whole host actually released? It's pretty clear that it shares a leitmotiv with "A mother's love". And I think it was guessed who that song belonged to.
I spent like 2 hours thinking it's some bs mechanic and I have to practically no-hit Ceroba to defeat her until I noticed that my max HP decreases inconsistently so I figured it has to do so for a reason, and THEN I discovered that touching the borders do that. I felt like such an idiot when I realized that after so long

After watching Starlo die, I wanted to see how hard this fight would be - after all, Ceroba had just watched her childhood friend die in her arms I was very pleased; the dialogue especially got me When she died, I didn't even cry (of course, that might be because I had previously broke down during Starlo's death, but oh well lmao); I was so pleased with her last words Even one of my friends, who's never had any contact with this game (and only likes it because of the amount of rants I've given to her) was impressed and called Ceroba hot, which was very out of context, but she meant well
the terrifying thing about Ceroba in this fight is that she doesnt care whether she lives or dies. she lost the last thing keeping her going, so she is purely fueled by rage here. her survival be damned, she just wants to see you suffer
i actually wonder why this song has no kanako leitmotif like is ceroba actually just this pissed so she the only thing she can think of is outright killing you this much she even forgets about the mask
there IS a kanako leitmotif though... 0:46 listen to the bells in the background oh yeah also ironically all three phases of "love of a mother" has absolutely no kanako leitmotifs whatsoever even though that's when she actually wore the mask even more ironically, the pre-mask phase literally starts with a huge kanako motif in your face, however _it doesn't even have ceroba's own motif_
Came here just because I need to share some thoughts before my brain explodes [no mercy route spoilers, of course] I was wandering why, out of all of Ceroba's boss themes, this felt the saddest and heaviest to me. I mean, of course it would be, it's the genocide track, but being a tragic character, all of her songs are kinda like that from the get-go. It's filled with a background of sorrow and grief, especially that bit at 1:06 . And then it hit me - In the pacifist route, she's still an emotional wreck. Her sins weigh heavy on her mind and she's going through the motions, until you show up. Some small, tiny spark of hope reignites and she goes through great lengths to make sure her plan is fulfilled... Until the jig is up, and she runs away. But you're not the first glimmer of hope in her life - her friends are. Starlo and Martlet keeping her, unbeknownst to them, from fully being consumed by her grief. Even when she begs you to put her out of her misery, Ceroba still had some hope left. While her pacifist themes are still somewhat sorrowful, there's still hope shining beneath, fighting for a chance to shine in the second phase with the awesome leitmotif of Hopes And Dreams kicking in. But here... you strike down her best friend, in front of her eyes. Playing dirty and drawing your weapon behind his back, killing him for what you think is just. Her immediate anger and merciless attack is her lashing out for vengeance, now fully blinded by her grief. She refuses to talk throughout the entire fight, aside from her intro monologue. In her final words she tells you to not only go to hell, but to choke on the dust you've splayed across the underground. It's pure hatred and anger. To me, this track symbolizes the cruel truth of Ceroba's fate in this route. Even if she were to win (which, granted, will probably happen a couple of times), it's all for nothing. All hope, in her mind, is now truly and forever lost. It's a song of sorrowful vengeance. A song of a grieving mother, devoid of all hope left in her life. And it goes as hard as her fight.
I wonder if the name: "Trial by Fury" was an intended pun of trial by jury, would make sense, except there is no jury, only the judge, accused, and executioner, with Clover filling in the role of the first and second one
Somewhat. A recurring theme with Clover in the Genocide is that they believe themselves to be judge, jury and executionner at the same time, and the 'Fury' part not only serves as wordplay by the fact that the 'trial' here is done by none other than Clover's own emotion, but also could be a play on Ceroba's own rage. Both fighters are marked for death by the other, Clover for having taken what little Ceroba had left, and Ceroba for standing in Clover's way.
For me this fight was an upward struggle for a dude with low reaction time. For the flower circles with explosions of blue and orange, I just had to tank it. Everything else involving memorization was pretty easy so I managed to pass by after like 5 deaths
dude this car kicks ass i can watch madas- madagascar while i'm driving "what kind of music do you like?" "hippo hop" haha those animals are so fucking funny it makes me want to merge without looking

Like most other genocide route boss songs for actual fights are either more optimistic for your opponent (battle against a true hero), high energy/adrenaline filled (megalovania, martlet's, big shot technically), or more of a desperate last stand (end_of_the_line), but the opening notes and a few measures of this (especially what i think is a piano before the enemy retrearing portion) capture an air of tragedy
I genuinely feel bad for having to kill Ceroba in a way a lot of other geno fight songs don't (even if their surrounding scenes still do)

Damn it. I couldn’t take this song seriously cause of that video.
After watching Starlo die, I wanted to see how hard this fight would be - after all, Ceroba had just watched her childhood friend die in her arms
I was very pleased; the dialogue especially got me
When she died, I didn't even cry (of course, that might be because I had previously broke down during Starlo's death, but oh well lmao); I was so pleased with her last words
Even one of my friends, who's never had any contact with this game (and only likes it because of the amount of rants I've given to her) was impressed and called Ceroba hot, which was very out of context, but she meant well
the terrifying thing about Ceroba in this fight is that she doesnt care whether she lives or dies. she lost the last thing keeping her going, so she is purely fueled by rage here. her survival be damned, she just wants to see you suffer
100% true, it's her certified Touhou Junko moment
i actually wonder why this song has no kanako leitmotif
like is ceroba actually just this pissed so she the only thing she can think of is outright killing you
this much she even forgets about the mask
She wasn't prepared to have to use it unlike in Pacifist
there IS a kanako leitmotif though...
0:46
listen to the bells in the background
oh yeah also ironically all three phases of "love of a mother" has absolutely no kanako leitmotifs whatsoever even though that's when she actually wore the mask
even more ironically, the pre-mask phase literally starts with a huge kanako motif in your face, however _it doesn't even have ceroba's own motif_
The mask has no boost in power, ceroba uses it in pacifist to hide her emotions
Came here just because I need to share some thoughts before my brain explodes
[no mercy route spoilers, of course]
I was wandering why, out of all of Ceroba's boss themes, this felt the saddest and heaviest to me.
It took me at least 3 deaths to realize the walls were killing me. 😅
Huh i never thought about it that way i thought it was wordplay on trial by fire
For me this fight was an upward struggle for a dude with low reaction time.
For the flower circles with explosions of blue and orange, I just had to tank it.
Everything else involving memorization was pretty easy so I managed to pass by after like 5 deaths
