Congratulations to you. This is exactly what I am looking into for my family. Infrastructure is our main issue at present, but I look forward to following your journey.
Welcome to the world of homestead scale dairy!!! I've got a series of posts over on my website on how to build a milking stanchion. It should scale down pretty easily for your dexter. One thing to keep in mind with that short cow you're probably gonna want an elevated platform to milk her on just for comfort and efficiency sake....
Congratulations! I love ❤️ that you did all your research. Welcome to the Dexter journey. All the hard work will be well worth it. The milk is amazing!
The Grass-fed Homestead thank you! We are not nearly as prolific as you are. So impressed with all your content. Looking forward to new content with your pretty new gal Red. We will be doing a artificial insemination series of videos soon with our Dexters. We hope that will be interesting. So happy to have found your page, there's a lot to learn here.
Thank you! This video confirms my choice for our family. We are going to go with Dexters. Seeing you lead her at the end clinched it as I will be the one milking and taking care of her. Plus, they are small enough to not be too intimidating for my kids to learn to milk, too.
You guys are doing awesome. I love how you ask all of the right questions. Congrats on getting a cow and I just saw on Justin Rhodes channel that they will be visiting you soon. 👍🏻👍🏻
YAY! So excited! What a beautiful cow too! Imagine all the great dairy products you will be able to make at home now! So looking forward to seeing more! :)
Nice haircut, Ashley. :) Also, looking forward to watching the story continue to progress. It's really impressive how far you guys have come in such a short time. Dan's fervor and sense of purpose are admirable.
My dexter broke very well with a natural horsemanship halter with extra nose knots. You can order it at Sunset Halters. I think Dexters have a history of oxen work. Mine was packing my little kid before long, which would be so fun for your kid.
Wow. All these opportunities sort of keep falling into your lap...almost like it's just meant to be. Very excited for you. Red seems like she will be an amazing family cow for you, and she is gorgeous!
So wonderful that you're getting Red, the calf and getting her bred too! So lucky! Oh! I would suggest getting her tested to find out if she's got milk more digestible for folks bellies. If you ever decided to use her as your base for building a herd you could advertise that as well! I know you don't plan such a thing now... but the future? One never knows. =) Good Luck friends! 🌱Be Blessed ღ 🌼
Idk if you will see this but I live in north Idaho too so thx to you I know where to get IPPs pigs and Katahdin sheep and I’m getting reds daughter ruby on Tuesday lol 😂
Awesome new adventure! I'm so pleased she has a nice temper. My dexter cow was a nightmare. Charged anyone who went into her paddock with her head down unless they carried a whip or a length of poly pipe. Could kick in any direction, Could put her hoof in the milking bucket - even with a leg rope on. I was really glad to see the end of that one but thankfully that sort of temper isn't typical.
Fun! We love our Dexters! I totally agree with not getting a bull, at least for now. They are a lot more work to manage, and they are typically not as gentle with the kids. It is interesting that she is moving her so soon after being bred, that can be a little risky. If she waits 21 days she would know if she was pregnant for sure. Good luck on this new adventure! You will love the Dexter breed.
Your vet can check at about a month to see if cow is preg, my vet charges $12 if i take her in and if she comes out there is additional $35 farm call charge Good luck i live my Dexters
Just wondering if all the family members are on board with milking, now, and how it's going in general with you? I have been raising. Saanen goats for years, but have developed rheumatoid arthritis. So am considering parting with my goats for a single Dexter and give up my milk sales for just my farm's use. I've raised cattle before, so I'll be fine with management, just need less legwork that multiple animals necessitate. I hope you and Red are doing well together. Would love to know.
Hi Diane - We wound up not getting Red. She tested A1 A2 and we were looking for A2 A2 so we used our deposit to buy a steer for beef instead. Sadly, I never did get a milk cow.
Someday we want a either a dexter or miniature jersey. We have 4 acres but need to develop and manage pasture in order to do this. I see us starting with a couple goats, using Salatin method, then moving toward a single cow. Probably milk but possibly beef. Thanks for the tips😃🌈🤙
Sooo exciting!! I look forward to watching your building projects! We love to make stuff out of pallets too!!! Little Buddy, what are you going to name your new calf? 👍
these are the "best" homesteader breed on paper. They were used to plow and break ground too. Training her to drag a sledge may allow a multi-purpose addition for a "mini ox" to help with chores around the farm. The calves will mature and can do work too. Hope there is a local vet to keep her healthy and happy. best wishes
Great video as usual Daniel. I think I just became your 26,001st subscriber. I've really enjoyed all your videos but never subscribed because Diane would have me view on her computer screen. Am elated that you are into knapweed honey. It is at the very top of my honey taste preferences!! we miss beekeeping.
Don't leave a halter on 24/7 beacause it can actually grow into there face or rub on them and be uncomfortable(just a suggestion) Also congratulations on your new cow!
:) amazing! I love cows! Dexter is just the right size for a small homestead...will you guys be processing the steer for meat or selling him? (I know that's not fun to think about when they are calf size o.- )
Any chance you can share what you paid for her? I’m on my last deployment and retiring from the Army in March and I’m looking for a Dexter in Missouri.
This is an older video so this questions may not get answered, but: Part 1: whats the difference between breed and size? For example: Can a jersey, dexter, and Holstein all be a mini in size? Or does breed determine size? Part 2: what size is Red? She seems smaller than a mini, based on what I have seen but she may just a small mini, idk. Reason: I ask because if i was to get a cow in the future I would like a cow this size that has a high butter fat milk. If thats even possible. I also have borrowed some books on milking cows and homesteading with cows and have been reading stuff online but I am still confused by a lot of it.
There are mini Jerseys etc. but Dexters aren't mini meaning they weren't bred to be small. The "minis" were genetically selected and bred to be small. Dexters naturally developed as small without human intervention
The Grass-fed Homestead, thank you for the fast response, I honestly wasn't expecting it 😀. So to make sure I understand, cows can be small for two reasons: either selective breeding or the natural order of things. If it was selective breeding that makes it a mini, if its natural its just a small cow that just happens to be of a mini size?
The Grass-fed Homestead oh wow, that's such an easy thing to get confused about, haha I feel silly now. Thank you for clearing that up for me, I appreciate it so much. God Bless!
Hey! I had my mind made up the second I saw her (red) ☺ She's beautiful! I also likes the one with some white on him/her. If it were up to me I'd get 3, all different colors 😊. OK ya dun good !
We've had 6 calves, all heifers, so we purchased a bull calf and castrated so we have beef for next year. We will have 4 bred heifers going into winter.
Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL, I contracted BRUCELLOSIS from raw farm milk when I was 22. Very, very sick for weeks, am now 70 and have suffered from side effects every day. DO NOT DO THIS.
I'd milk that cow...you'll have hands n'forearms can handsqueeze a pro-footballer to th'ground!! My pap milked cows in his youth; he's 95 and he's still th'one everybody goes to t'get open stubborn jars n'th'like..no arthritis neether!
Congratulations to you. This is exactly what I am looking into for my family. Infrastructure is our main issue at present, but I look forward to following your journey.
It's an issue for us to but we are improvising 😊 thank you

She has so many things going for her! And you were careful to ask a lot of good questions and to check out other cows, too. I'm so happy for you!
Thank you Sue!
I liked this video. The Dexter cows are surprisingly small. Very sweet though.

exactly! The size makes them an excellent choice for families with children. Let me know how it works out with getting a Dexter

Congratulations! Red looks to be in the peak of health with a great disposition. Dexters appear to be the ideal family dual-purpose cattle breed.
Thank you!

She is really nice too! Thank you 😊
Exciting! That little black cow really loved Little Buddy!
She was very sweet. He wanted to buy her. She wasn't for sale
WOW,,, brilliant cow. Dexter is a great breed. Good for meat and milk. Well done you,,,
I just watched the video. Congratulations on your cow!!!
Yay you will love them. Ready to see you progress
We're excited. We can't wait to bring her home
Holy cow! Congrats. I think. You'll do just fine, so exciting.
Thanks PD!
very happy for you! She is beautiful...

indeed! The future has a way of changing plans. Katie took a hair sample yesterday and is sending it off for testing
So excited and happy with this new acquisition! Congrats!

wow! That is quite an attitude!
Dang. I hope you got some good steaks out of that.
Very exciting.Red look like a lovely dexter and the calves are so cute.
A most excellent decision! So happy for you's and for Red and her calf!
He's getting the cow to benefit the whole family. If you drink the milk, love, you share the milking of the cow.

Thank you! We are excited. There are some timing issues at play, hence the 1 cycle breeding as opposed to 2.
It's a damn bull.
Not a pet dummy.
Winter is coming! You sure have given yourself a lot to do!
Better than nothing to do!

@@TheGrassfedHomestead Thanks for the update! Well, Hon, cows will still be there when you want one. Life is various! 😁🌹
@@dianneiverglynne yes!

Your going to need more then just a pallet cattle panel barn. Hope you guys are building a barn for winter for the sheep and cow.
Dan, That's a great looking cow, Congrats!
thanks Tracy!
yes! i am so happy you are getting red!
We are too!😊
such a beautiful location and farm
It is!
Based on what I've learned, I'm gonna switch over to Dexter!!
I know right?!
Great decision!!!! She is a beauty!
Sooo exciting!! I look forward to watching your building projects! We love to make stuff out of pallets too!!! Little Buddy, what are you going to name your new calf? 👍
Thank you 😊 He hopefully won't be named. He will be for beef
The Grass-fed Homestead maybe you could name him Taco...lol! 😁
That's one beautiful cow!!
Things going at warp speed. Congrats!! I'm really debating a small breed cow.
Do it! Sorry... I mean... There are good reasons to get a small breed cow

It's my job to keep her healthy and happy. The vet will be for when things go bad
Your videos are very nice and informative, thank you. (Also you cover most of my interests :))
:) Thank you for the nice feedback
I'm getting Dexter cows soon. Just gotta find out where to get them.
check out wild eats dot com or livestock conservancy dot org. You can search by zip code there, I believe.
@@TheGrassfedHomestead thank you so much.

almost 10k and now cows =) go go go go go go =)
:) Thanks guys!!
Are you in Colorado? I'm looking to raise organic dexters, will you be selling any calves this spring?
Idaho
a milk cow would be awesome!
:) amazing! I love cows! Dexter is just the right size for a small homestead...will you guys be processing the steer for meat or selling him? (I know that's not fun to think about when they are calf size o.- )
Meat! We are actually thinking of getting an additional steer (a yearling) so we will start having our own beef reliably
Any chance you can share what you paid for her? I’m on my last deployment and retiring from the Army in March and I’m looking for a Dexter in Missouri.
I think asking price was around $2000
yay! that's great news!

Can't get over the toplines!! Man, I bet they do a good beef steer purebred, if you don't get a heifer...
I just love a petty ol'milk cow!!
People say Dexters don't Ai easily , mainly because they don't show fertility signs much . Most people find it easier to have them in with the bull
With all the animals in your homestead when are you going to get ducks and a guard goose?
I doubt we will ever have a guard goose. I like duck eggs but my wife doesn't so we may not get ducks either.
Congrats
Love your cow! So jelious!
Have you tasted Red's milk or from another Dexter? Good luck with Red, she and her calf looks like they will easily become part of the family.
We haven't but we are anxious to try some!
So awesome!
The scenery around that farm is breathtaking. What state is that in? Holy cow! LOL
Idaho!
Nothing like the Pacific Northwest for scenery. My husband and I currently looking for land here in Washington.
How are the rabbits, chickens, sheep, dog, and llama doing?
all are well! Thanks for asking! :)
Hey! I had my mind made up the second I saw her (red) ☺ She's beautiful! I also likes the one with some white on him/her. If it were up to me I'd get 3, all different colors 😊.

I'd like 3 cows also! I have to keep things realistic though. Thanks Trebor!
o that is so cool i have to say that is awesome
nice farm with trees around what state is this please
Idaho
You milk cows, you can squeeze-hand anybody to the ground yer hands get so strong!!
Good choice...
I so want a Dexter but I don't have any time to properly care for one.
whoop whoop! TIME FOR FRESH MILK AND CHEESE!
indeed!
Well, well. Red looks beautiful. But, Daniel, it appears You will NEVER be able to leave for an overnight trip for the duration of your lifetime. 😆
Where are you located. I live in MN. We raise Dexters. We love our girls
We are in Idaho. Do you raise them for beef, dairy, or both?
currently for beef. The dexter is such a nice breed to work with. We love our Dexters. Committing to milk is a lot of work. Good luck
Just beef. Milking is a big commitment
We've had 6 calves, all heifers, so we purchased a bull calf and castrated so we have beef for next year. We will have 4 bred heifers going into winter.
that is cool
She's a little worried about her calf..good gentle cow tho...
awesome
If you don’t already have a bull, get one and name him Bernie
Edit: I meant Bernie
I think Red needs a longer leach in order to have enough room to shake these damn flies off.
Great video. But, your wife doesn't seem stoked at all helping out milking the cow. That is a bad sign.
Yes. A very bad sign. Things didn't work out so well.
I don't think a polled Dexters are a thing!
Did you get a cow?
no
The Grass-fed Homestead why, what happened?
Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL, I contracted BRUCELLOSIS from raw farm milk when I was 22. Very, very sick for weeks, am now 70 and have suffered from side effects every day. DO NOT DO THIS.
Buy the cow... Ditch the wife.
