Tales of Eternia was the best RPG game I've ever played since I was a kid. The story and battle system were the best. I 100% don't complain about their voice acting, it's pretty decent and it did well in portraying the events that are captured in every scene.

Thanks for making this video. I remember when I first finished Tales of Eternia I started my second playthrough right after credits. The best RPG I have ever played.
As a people who live in a country which English is not a mother language, This game had the best Voice Acting of all the PS1 era. The Voice Acting helping me a lot with understanding of the pronounciation which normally use in daily basic not what i always learned by the movie also how to say something in a cool way too. Never once in my life that i thought im gonna hear someone shouted "Demon Lightening Hammarrr"!! without the game on. Love this masterpiece..

Definetly between the top five best tales of games, I'm playing again right now and is amazing, the 2d graphics look very well even in my QLED of 55 inches, this game is to my excellent and the only minnor issue that have is the random encounters.
This is my very 1st Tales game I ever owned and it's the reason I became a hardcore fan of the series' unique real time linear motion battle system. Symphonia's release also garnered my interests even more of the series. Since then, I pretty own the majority of these games, even some imports as well like RM: 2, Destiny Remake and Vs.
ok. here's a small little run down. 1. retcon'd origins 2. WTF character roster that makes no sense 3. Piss poor gameplay 4. B.S enemy A,I that wins by avoiding you. 5. an EXP in a fighting game serves NO purpose and has no place in one. 6. clear favoritism just to name a few but all this will be detailed in future episodes
yes but the form is going to change. i want to be able to condense all the information as well as a review/retrospective in a more streamlined way, the early episodes were perhaps too ambitious but this one and destiny are still ones im proud of. I know its been a long time and im sorry its been so long. we have no abandoned our work here. just like with all things, life gets in the way. lost loved ones, work taking over. just a manner of sorting through it. but its going to happen.
Sweet video guys! This is far from my favorite tales game but it was a pretty sweet and enthusiastic review/retrospective. Nice to see some people out there got more enjoyment out of this then I did. Also the podcast was excellent. Yes, I am jealous :P

Yay I got a thanks credit lol. I love learning about what went on behind the scenes to make games, even more so if it's a series a like. While I've only had experience playing Eternia on my PSP (and boy was that a lucky find) I can see why it's one of the more loved entries of the mothership series. Though I will admit Vesperia & both the Xillia games are my personal tops. Can't wait for the next part :)
Great video guys! Love Tales and am actually looking forward to Legendia which is still a ways away. I really think Legendia wasn't so bad but I guess the comparisons to the other entries don't help it's cause. :/ Anyway, I've got to get back to Innocence which I'm almost done with.
Ah, the game from my childhood that, to this day, is my favorite. I'm probably among the few that actually enjoyed the voice acting for what is was. I just love everything about Eternia.

Namco actually sated that the name change was because they wanted to "bring more recognition to Tales of Destiny" Fans actually wanted the Tales of Phantasia PS1 remake over this, believe it or not. Also, Kevin Miller voiced Sly Cooper.

God I freakin' love this game! Probably my number 3 game behind Destiny and Abyss, God awful voice acting or not. LMBS in this game was so smooth and it was it was awesome to pull off new combinations of moves.

I'm so sorry this response took so long. TH-cam never tells us when people say anything. Honestly. either one is fine really. just play whichever one is convenient for you. The PSP version on some levels is obviously superior because of the better hardware and the graphics being rendered in a better/smoother framerate and quality. but the PS1 is no slouch either.

Not the most thrilling story, characters, and bad voice acting. But the gameplay was so addictive. Rare to find an RPG where I welcome random encounters. Fighting was just fun.
I'm sorry to hear you think that but its expected not everyone would share my opinion. I think while the story intentionally starts off slow, it grows to become in my opinion the best in the series with a smaller cast of characters that worked so well together. also the voice acting isn't bad. i've discussed this with those involved. they read their lines fine, the only that that's off sometimes is just the mis-matched context. if you want to see what ACTUAL bad voice acting is, i can definitely show you. Still, i'm glad you were able to find some enjoyment with the game!
@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming Haha well there's always worse. There's a spectrum of "bad voice acting." It's bad, but it's not Symphony of the Night "bad," sure. I'm not blaming the voice actors for all of it. It's a shame they weren't directed or given context or feedback, which I'm sure is what happens in the industry nowadays. As for the story/characters, I don't think it's awful. Just nothing special. And this is coming from a guy in his 30s. I first played the game when I was 13 or 14. I don't remember being particularly thrilled, but I'm sure I enjoyed it more than I do now. I didn't really mean to attack the game though. It's still lots of fun!

after looking back at how we handled the story parts. it wasn't practical for the information. So instead we're moving the Retrospective series over to Review format because that way the information can all be put in one video without making separate hour long videos

As a site note I do not like how every major reviews make so much fuss about if a game was released in a given country. If they did not want my money their loss. I found a way to play this game back in 2001 ;) Translation groups though could be more efficient ( TOD2 :( ). Gaming industry is making more than music and movies combined and people for free are translating games no one wants to localize... :( bizzare

well we do recommend the ps1 version. despite being an expensive hand it's worth every penny. for those with a budget. the PSP version is the only other alternative. but I guess it's possible to use an emulator too.

I always shrugged the bad voice acting in this game due to it being from that era, all games just had awful dubs back then. Obviously it was a directing thing.
I use to have a copy of this game that I kept from a video game store. I let my friend borrow it then they claimed they lost it. Then they blocked me on FB. That happened when I was 16 years old. I’m 31 now, and really sad I don’t have it anymore. I would really like to see it remade. I’d really like to play it again.
Sadly unless you have near $300 to spend on an original PS1 copy, Emulation may be your best bet. its still not gotten any ports to the PSN store or Steam. PSP is an option too but its starting to get up there in price as well, but its PSP so, handheld. not sure what you feel like doing.
@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming I’ve never done emulation before, but I’m seriously considering doing it for this game. I’ve also thought about getting a PSP & this game for it, but I want to stream it. I’m not sure if one can stream from the PSP or not. Just something I would have to research more.
@@mssaltygiggles Hello again, maybe i can help you out, If you have a decent PC. I guarantee you can run the game, i would recommend the PSP version if you are going to play for yourself and stream it since with the PSP version you dont have to worry about disc swapping. to start, look up the *emulator PPSSPP* on Google or on TH-cam and you will quickly find it. next thing to look for on google is *Tales of Eternia PSP Iso* There are very simple tutorials here on youtube how to get the emulator working but its very easy you could do it yourself. if you have anymore questions, just ask =)
League of Legends is not an RPG It's a moba or rts if you will It's not even developed in Japan so that's not the best comparison Japan didn't even have a dedicated server until march 2016 :) They had to play on the NA server until then and playing with 200 ping is not fun Allthough they were at least able to play it

Tales of Eternia was way better than the real but lame Tales of Destiny 2, and 2D sprites aged much much better than those ugly primary 3D polygons.

While Abyss is my favourite, Xillia is a close second!I just wish my friend would come over more often since i decided to experience the story and gameplay at the same time as him. Right now we just made it to chapter 2.

is there a cheap way to get tales of eternia? from what ive seen, it costs hundreds to buy online.and i dont think there is a digital version
well we do recommend the ps1 version. despite being an expensive hand it's worth every penny. for those with a budget. the PSP version is the only other alternative. but I guess it's possible to use an emulator too.

You should've used footage of Chao Wars to show off how terrible English voice acting could be.
I always shrugged the bad voice acting in this game due to it being from that era, all games just had awful dubs back then. Obviously it was a directing thing.
definitely an argument to be made. but i would say Eternia's acting is actually much better then most realize.

I use to have a copy of this game that I kept from a video game store. I let my friend borrow it then they claimed they lost it. Then they blocked me on FB. That happened when I was 16 years old. I’m 31 now, and really sad I don’t have it anymore. I would really like to see it remade. I’d really like to play it again.
Sadly unless you have near $300 to spend on an original PS1 copy, Emulation may be your best bet. its still not gotten any ports to the PSN store or Steam. PSP is an option too but its starting to get up there in price as well, but its PSP so, handheld. not sure what you feel like doing.
@@Thebrotherhoodofgaming I’ve never done emulation before, but I’m seriously considering doing it for this game. I’ve also thought about getting a PSP & this game for it, but I want to stream it. I’m not sure if one can stream from the PSP or not. Just something I would have to research more.
@@mssaltygiggles Hello again, maybe i can help you out, If you have a decent PC. I guarantee you can run the game, i would recommend the PSP version if you are going to play for yourself and stream it since with the PSP version you dont have to worry about disc swapping. to start, look up the *emulator PPSSPP* on Google or on TH-cam and you will quickly find it. next thing to look for on google is *Tales of Eternia PSP Iso*
There are very simple tutorials here on youtube how to get the emulator working but its very easy you could do it yourself.

Japan didn't even have a dedicated server until march 2016 :)
They had to play on the NA server until then and playing with 200 ping is not fun
