Before I moved to Apple silicon I had a 2018 mini (i5/16GB/512GB) and it really was a good little computer. To me it's best feature was the ability to run Boot Camp because I have some old x86 programs that are still useful to me. I even had it hooked up to an eGPU so that I could run my Steam games. I still miss those features.
Ah yes.. the eGPU was really popular with those... They worked pretty good..
There are a few reasons it claims a higher price. It still can run the latest macOS,therefore not a legacy device. The x86 cpu is more diverse, whether it be bootcamp or virtualization for running Linux or windows software. X86 still has a huge marketshare. You still get MacOS, and the ability to run your 1 off software. Unless everything you do is Mac native, a M series cpu cannot compete here.
Great take on this. Thanks for sharing!
the good thing about the 2018 Mac mini is that the ram is upgradeable so you could buy one with base ram and upgrade it yourself if your confident enough to do it
im loving my i7 hexacore , 64GB RAM , rock solid boring support for all my audio stack .. i bought it before the M1 was launched but have no regets.. it does the basics well enough
I just bought the 2018 i5 model with 512gb for 240! the body is flawless too so it looks great on the desk
i just bought i5/32gb/1tb for $250, its still running very smooth, especially for recording sessions
Well I just replaced my 2012 i5 Mac mini with a 2018 i7 Mac mini with 1TB of storage and 16 gigs of ram for $500 CDN. I guess I did alright.
It was a worthy upgrade, and maxing out the RAM was a good decision.
picked up the i5 version for 200 bucks. I heard over over again, only go 2018 if you get a super deal. Not sure if mine is a great deal but I can draw comparisons to my m1 air. Perfectly capable and competent machine. Unless you're content creating, and even that works fine, you might look at m1 or better -- but if you can find one at less than 300 for the i7, presumably that's even a better deal. I upgraded my ram pretty seamlessly too -- an intel perk for the 2018 mini.
Just got mine i7 16 gb 256 was thinking to up the ram to 64 gd will that speed up the device ?
310usd bro
I would imagine it’s because they natively run macOS Sonoma and bootcamp can run windows 10. The hype will die off soon.
That $1K EBay config was probably more like $3K back in 2018. I have both a 2020 M1 mini and a 2018 i7 mini, both configured with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. The M1 runs rings around the 2018 in raw performance, but the 2018 can do things like run Linux or Windows (virtually or natively) that the M1 just doesn't offer. If you need to run Intel software the 2018 is the way to go. The 2018 mini also has 4 Thunderbolt ports where the M1 (base model) only has 2. In fact my 2018 mini is booted from a 2TB external Thunderbolt M.2 NVMe SSD, which I think is the easiest way to upgrade storage. As a bonus, the 2018 is still on the Apple supported list and can run Sonoma. So I can still see the value people assign to the 2018 model even today.
I would bet it is due to the Intel chip, upgradeable ram, more ports and the ability to use Bootcamp otherwise it makes no sense.
plus for $599, that's a steal for something like that. My laptop cost more.
This is exactly why. I have legacy FireWire devices and software that only runs on Intel chips. Works a charm if you can find a bargain
A MP 2013 does all that for 300 bucks
Great work on the analysis and details 👍
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
I'm considering getting a 2018 Mac mini too because I need to run windows (as well as MacOS). Apple silicon runs ARM Windows which is not likely to be able to run the legacy software. Must be a large market for this, thus the high prices.
Ebay prices are ridiculous, 1k for a 6 years old machine is madness. I am looking at few of these i7s with 2tb storage and 64gb ram around 450 usd. I am seriously tempted to buy one and run proxmox on it. Yes I have no plans to run mac os on this one, but as VM hypervisor this works well. I am going to run Windows 11 and few Linux distros to play around.
the old intel machines can install windows bootcamp natively still, and for the price your also getting a very good windows pc
Stop with the highlight transitions and camera shutter sounds, just do a hard cut man, it detracts from the content.
See I can’t stand hard cuts… it looks unprofessional and I think that detracts from the content. My AVD analytics would agree with the way I do it. It’s not for everyone. 🤷♂️
Thanks for the feedback.
i like the edits
The transition okay but yeah the camera clicking is distracting
I liked it
Agreed. I'm getting the nervous itch because of the sound effect
On those Intel cpu's the cpu doesn't do much work as dual core anyways, but all the codecs built into APU do most of the work.
Gaming is the reason.
Very good dialog!
Thanks homie
I should try do Mac mini 2012. still going very good price
Couldn’t hurt.. a 2014 can be found super cheap too
They've gotten a little bit more expensive. Been eyeing one to improve some iOS ports of a crossplatform app I have. Would go for the newer M ones but starting at 8gb won't do it for development.
It's the ability to run Bootcamp. 2018 Minis are £200-£450 in the UK too.
I just bought a 2018 for £400... the only reason I chose it over m2 chip, is because of bootcamp
Main reason I bought a 2018 MM was to run an external GPU. Unfortunately M1 and on doesn't support them.
I bought mine since my laptop was getting a bit rough and I managed to get a cheap black magic egpu which I had running my monitors. Looks amazing having the mini under the gpu fits perfectly. The i7 model is pretty good with the 32 gb of ram. Honestly I prefer the ease of use over the m3 air with the ease of plug and play
I am still on a mac mini 2018 with 64gb of ram. Developing software in a niche that probably arm will be able to fit in 15-20 years because of shitty performance for server hardware
Ps: using 2 monitors 4K on dp
can anyone suggest me i have mac mini 2018
but i want to buy 2020 macbook pro m1
which will be better
I bought one for 500 last year 1TB 32 GB RAM and an EGPU I’ve only been using it to record with DAW but I want to try Final Cut on it Bc my 5,1 is having trouble with some modern Codecs including IPhone and DJI Drone footage
It's likely due to people wanting to stick with Intel compatibility.
There isn't much left if anything at all that isn't updated to work with Silicon chips.
@@TheAppleHelpline True, but there's still a lot of legacy software, older stuff that you can actually *own* instead of renting via a monthly subscription, that will likely never be updated to work on Silicon.
@@TheAppleHelpline there’s VirtualBox and VMWare though.
@@TheAppleHelpline I do development on both Xcode for IOS and Visual Studio for Windows Server x86 products using Parallels. It's convenient having both on one machine. Win Server requires Intel. :)
Can we hope for a price reduction as the new MacMini lands. Still would love to upgrade my 2014.
Did you change the thermal paste? Apple uses really bad one and temps will improve majorly if you renew it by yourself
I guess my deal is I want a Mac that is a part time windows machine.
I want to utilize 4k external capture cards from elgato which only work in windows. But im mostly a Mac user so having a machine that can go back and forth unlike silicon makes sense to me.
Did some use the Mac Min as a football?
My 2013 iMac just died and I am shopping for a new system. I am an above average user and edit GoPro footage quite often and plan to start aTH-cam channel. Im not sure if I want a new iMac or a mini mac system. I would like for you to suggest a system for me. Also, will my 2013 periphals (magic mouse/keyboard, trackpad, and CD drive work with a new mini mac? What monitor would be best also. I hate to pay $1300.00 for a Studio display.
I just bought a i7 32Gb for 400€. In my opinion it totally wroths it.
Because of the price, this machine is obsolete and should not be bought.
I got a MacPro 2013, and it kicks the butt of this Mini in every area.
- MP's are 300 bucks, usually with 64GB of RAM
- 10-core CPU upgrade is 15 bucks
- It is 30-50% faster in multicore
- It is 400% faster in GPU on a single D500, if you can set both D500's to work it might be 800% faster
- RAM/SSD/CPU all upgradable for relative little money
- Silent. Where the Mini starts sounding like a rocket on multicore/gaming, the MP stays silent
- End of support is a non-issue. If you DO like to go beyond Monterey (I tend to revert to Mojave), OCLP is your friend.
Is there a lag in the audio or is it just me?
Other then that it’s stjll weird that people are spending that much money on a 2018 mac
I have issues watching YT videos with lag too... I just close the app or click away and come back...
Can you tell me I know the Mac mini 2018 has soldered on memory and ssd. My ssd is no longer working. Is it possible to boot from external ssd? I’d hate to send to Apple to replace the internal ssd, way too expensive.
The RAM is actually user replacable its just frowned upon by Apple who made it harder. Just got my 2018 Mac Mini and I love it. Gonna throw in a stick of 16GB's for 20GB's total. You should be able to boot from an external SSD I've done it on my broken macbook and used target disk mode to briefly do this on my 2012 Mac Mini
??
Did I miss where he answered why people still buy them?
I talked about it at the end... But I did say people are stupid... BUT I did say look for one that is less that 500 as a starter machine.
how well does it export in H.265 in final cut?
i keep giggling at a 2011 imac listed for $325. It's worth maybe $110 assuming good condition. There are no pictures and no disclaimer --- just the price.
Ram can upgrade
I'd buy that for a dev machine with boot camp.
If you can find it cheap enough it's a good pick
@@TheAppleHelpline just picked up the M3 Pro, one step from base. This thing is amazing for a dev and systems engineer standpoint.
2018 thermal paste lol = Loud Fans
I found an i3 16gb ram for $220 cad.
hey Apple on there website sell the 2018 model i3 with only 8gb of ram for 1000 AUD (660 USD) on there website. So maybe everyones looking at what apple charges and copying it.
How much longer will my 2018 Mac mini run for?
Should I consider upgrading anytime soon?
Nope, upgrade ram if you need to and add an eGPU and it'll be a powerful little machine for quite a while longer.
It still runs the latest OS, so It's worth hanging on for a bit.
👍
Thanks
bo they aren't , glue much?
Pls try to ease up on the camera click sounds lol, it was very distracting
I am stilk trying to sell my 2010 mac mini for $50 , no buyers! With ssd, the new 2010 model
M1 is the bare minimum now
These 2018's loaded are still dang good
2018 running like a champ it’s what we call the last legendary models
m1 suck haha better go for the m2 Insted
The dollar sign goes before the amount ($1000 not 1000$).
Lol here are they around 475 euro 😂
"Silicone" - sigh....
Yup... 😏
Dude, please look up the difference between SILICONE and SILICON. I highly doubt that there is any silicone in these computers.
LOL… I don’t need to look it up.. I need to learn how to say it correctly.. 🤦♂️
Sorry… my stupid Philly accent repeats everything wrong..
People are idiots and think their crap is worth money.
People are still paying for it... So they'll keep grifting..
