    Can you explain the differences for ssd external vs internal storage.
    This has been mind boggling to understand. I’m looking at getting and m4 pro Mac mini however I know the internal storage is low which has me almost wanting to get an older m1 Mac Studio, with larger 2tb storage.
    I can see this is where Apple really gets the bang for its bucks. They charge insane amounts of money for extra storage.
    Anyone that can help me with this I would love you forever!

    • @craigneidel

      @@craigneidel YES!
      You and several TH-camrs showed me how we DON'T have to fork out tons of money on overpriced Apple storage.
      One of my existing 512GB NVMEs from an old Acer desktop is already enclosed in an old Thunderbolt 3 case. As YOU already know, Thunderbolt-speed storage is fantastic.
      After you pointed that out, one of your fellow TH-camrs from "Mac Musical Solutions Inc" made a video about this home folder/external boot jazz.
      Since I have an existing 8GB/256GB just lying around, I implemented this idea.
      As I've said, I'm a crazy old retired IT guy who spends time doing crazy hobbyist stuff with his old rubbish.
      Under my daily internet/email/TH-cam/mahjongg-playing usage...I cannot perceive any lag in performance from using a Thunderbolt 3 drive in this external bootup/home folder configuration.
      So? Yeah, man! Try this idea when you get a chance with your M4 Pro Mini. See if you notice problems when you do actual production work with it.
      That's the acid test, and you will make very valuable content by documenting this journey!
      Because of you and the other dude...I actually WANT to splash out a little retirement income on an M4 Pro and a Thunderbolt 5 drive.
      Have fun! Aloha!
      Oh...BTW.
      I created a user account with which to experiment on external boot and home folder.
      I didn't try the admin account like "Mac Musical Solutions Inc" does in his videos.
      I may try that...but maybe on my OTHER M1 Mac.
      Since I have 5 othet Intel and Raspberry Pi Linux machines, I guess I can "de-Linux" my other M1 Mac...
      ...or why don't I keep my dual-booting M1 Mac and ADD the external boot function?
      Hmmm...
      More crazy, hare-brained experiments ahead, huh? Aloha!

    When you address monitors can you please pay specific attention to the scaling issue. I know you made a passing reference to it, but it is more important than you seem to give it credit for. If you get a monitor that does not match the native resolution then you will get scaling which in self imposes an overhead which can hit performance. So if you want a 27 inch then you should get a 5k, but there are very few options at this size. When you consider the 4k alternatives can you also mention which don’t impose the scaling issue. I would like to consider a 4k option but would not consider it at 27 inch but what sizes would ok as far as this issue is concerned. You mentioned that you would be reviewing a new 5k option but at what size is this gonna be? Anyway I look forward to seeing this

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm going to review a new 5K at 27". I just give my opinion and with this particular monitor I don't really notice scaling issues or any performance hit. Sometimes this is a better assessment than numbers on paper. I think most know that 4K will have slight imperfections vs. 5K but if you don't think about it I don't even notice them and everything on this monitor is very crisp and performance is good even with video editing and more demanding tasks. It is what is is until we get more 5K to hit the market for a reasonable cost.

    • @robertt9342
      @robertt9342 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      OP, can you describe this “scaling issues” that cause a performance hit? AFAIK you can just render at the native rate in Mac OS and you only run into “scaling issues” if you want to render at rate outside of integer scaling. Rendering at the native rate shouldn’t have any performance penalties, it’s only when you want to render the elements larger or smaller than the native output that should have a very small performance penalty.
      An example would be to have a 4K 27inch screen but have the UI rendered at the size of what a 27inch 1440p would look like to have larger text and font. The 5k screens get around this as 1440 is an even factor of their native resolution. If you rendered the 4K at 1080p size on a 4K, you shouldn’t have any display issues resulting in any performance hit.

    I haven’t got a new Mac yet, I’ve got a new mouse recently. It’s the Logitech G304, yeah it’s a gaming mouse, and I’m not a gamer, but it’s great for other stuff too.
    It’s using an USB receiver, and I have a hub for the mouse, keyboard and webcam, making switch peripheral between computers much easier. It’s got a very high polling rate of 1000hz, so it’s very responsive and smooth. Those so called productivity mice, including the very expensive MX Master 3S, only got 125hz, which in my opinion is bad for productivity. I used to use Microsoft’s Surface Precision Mouse for my home mouse, its 125hz polling rate really wasn’t great for video editing, I have to use wired mode to get a good experience. And Microsoft didn’t provide a Mac software to configure their mice, I had to turn on my rarely used Surface Pro to do that. Logitech provides a software, which made things much easier.
    I also use a Magic Mouse 2 for work, despite it’s only 90hz, I don’t know what magic Apple put into it, it’s incredibly smooth and responsive, but switching it between Macs is too complicated, so I decided to go the USB receiver way.
