I follow the rule "never loan money I can't afford to just give away". I set the terms of repayment clearly. Then let it go. If they don't repay me I won't ruin the relationship over it, but I also won't lend them money again.

Make sure to get it in writing, ESPECIALLY cash. If it's a cheque / check or an online cash transfer app, put LOAN on the memo line. And THINK about to whom you are loaning the money. What is their credit like? Have you known them to pay ANYONE back???
I loaned my friend money (cash), but I was renting from her, so I knew I could just take it out of my rent, which I did, telling her about it. I took a little out of my rent each month (about $30) until it was paid off (about $170) because I didn't want to wipe her out.

The only way it makes sense is if she actually owed her money, the judge saw right through her like a pane of glass. Friendship of 18 years obviously doesn't mean that much to her if she stiffs you on a loan so losing THAT kind of friend is actually a good thing. Better to let a relative hold your money while you lend them money for taking care of your siblings so that you can both make loans to each other apart from the initial sums spent on in-laws and friends.
