Steelers practice report: Russell Wilson plans keep changing? Is it Justin Fields' huddle in Week 2?

  • The Post-Gazette's Brian Batko and Christopher Carter report from the Steelers' South Side practice facility, where the team's QB plans for NFL Week 2 against the Denver Broncos remain uncertain. Why does the story about Russell Wilson's status seem to keep changing? And is Justin Fields the likely starter for a second week in a row?
Our duo tackles those topics, plus comments from other notable plays. Will OC Arthur Smith use George Pickens as a decoy against Devner's Patrick Surtain II to free up Pat Freiermuth? Will Troy Fautanu start after taking first-team reps? And where does Broderick Jones fit into that conversation?

Why does no one understand that it's a loooooong season?
I think Tomlin knows the back half of the schedule is where you will need Wilson.
Or, Fields makes a case early and you are in a great position. This isn't a bad thing and it's not a controversy. Not at all.

Big Ben averaged about 21 pass attempts his rookie season....he threw for 2600 yards. He had less attempts and less yardage in his second season. The offense ran through Jerome Betts (RB). Steelers must stay the course with Justin Fields and give him the same opportunity they gave Ben Roethlisberger.

Boys, you need to understand that calf injuries are tricky as hell. You will think you’re over it and it comes back on you out of nowhere, and you’re limping and starting over. It’s an extremely dense and hard to diagnose muscle.

Both are on one-year contracts, but Fields is the potential future QB for the Steelers, so go with him until they lose.

Hypothetically, I wonder if the Steelers tried to sign him mid season to a low-mid level deal for like 4-5 years if he would take it, or if he would hold out, bet on himself to play on fire and raise his stock the rest of this season, and see what they or someone else would offer after the season? This is hypothetical, not saying it is something the Steelers would do. I just wonder if he would cash out or if he really thinks he’s gonna raise his value as this season goes on, bc he also risks hurting his value if he plays awful. If he has an awful stint here, he might be considered done for good by the entire NFL

That’s not how it works. If they gonna go with him then they will go with him even if he loses. Y’all love pulling players when they lose.

They are acting like fields as a rookie which is completely understandable if he continues to make progress keep the ball safe it’ll open the offense more and we’ll see what he’s made of. This is my version of Pickett I’m a buckeye fan and I know how that all works so I’m not gonna say he’s the dude but I have plenty of hope he can become him

The more Justin plays the more they can see what they have in him. They know pretty much what they have in Russ, a good but no longer great player. Can Justin be great? We don’t know but at least he has the potential to be where Russ is on the downhill of his career. We need a long term solution at QB. Here’s hoping Justin can turn into a great player

One of the keys is JF did not turn the ball over. Won't say he had a good game but good enough to win.

JF did his job last week, but his job was very easy. Either Russ, the Steelers wouldn’t have had to avoid any DB. Russ torches all of them. I’ve never heard of any coach trying to avoid a DB with Russ at QB.

I just wonder if they know something we don’t about Wilson’s injury. They may have know all along that Wilson would never be ready. This whole thing could be about mentoring Fields.

So it’s Russell’s fault that he’s not starting is that what you clowns are saying last time I checked it was an idiot trainer who had a 35-year-old quarterback, pushing a sled which caused this. Not to mention, Mike Thomas said they would not play him unless he’s 100% so why is it on us because Russell’s always wanted to play and he played through worst injuries in his past you guys are changing a narrative trying to act as if Russ is hiding something it’s been stated before by Mike that he will not play until he’s 100%.

I’m fine with fields staying the QB, we need to build chemistry and consistency and fields is the QB of the future. However, I would give anything to see Russ go out there and throw for 500 yards and 5 TDs against the broncos. Yes I know that would never happen but it gets my point across.

    • @DeCurtaRican
      @DeCurtaRican 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

How would that “never happen?” Russ has come close to 500 yards against a better team. In fact, he would’ve had close to 500 yards and exactly 5 TDs against the Seahawks in 2022 if not for his receivers dropping catchable end zone passes and the O-Line negating a beautiful TD pass up the gut in the 4th quarter.

Russ will outplayed what the Broncos are paying him this year. Just wait until he is healed.
And Broncos fans need to worry about their own squad. There are many problems.
