The Magic Roundabout is a road junction in swindon that consists of five mini-roundabouts arranged around a sixth central one, with everyone commuting in an anti-clockwise direction. Constructed in 1972, it is named after the famous British children's television series called The Magic Roundabout. In 2009 it was voted the fourth scariest junction in Britain, in a poll by Britannia Rescue. The complex junction offers multiple paths between feeder roads. The outer circle carries traffic in a clockwise direction, like a normal roundabout (in places where traffic drives on the left hand side of the road), and less proficient users may choose to use only the outer circle. The inner circle carries traffic in a anticlockwise direction, and more proficient users may choose to use the alternative paths.
The roundabout was constructed according to the design of Frank Blackmore, of the British Transport and Road Research Laboratory. Traffic flow around the larger, inner roundabout is anticlockwise, and traffic flows in the usual clockwise manner around the five mini-roundabouts and the outer loop.

This roundabout works extremely well. Contrary to reports there are very few accidents as people concentrate and often make eye contact with other drivers when negotiating it. I have never seen the roundabout jammed up, the roads jam up getting to it but there are so many options for getting from entry to exit. I love using it try to use a different route each time. Great fun!
At 0:50 a small silver van comes from the right lane of the A4312 (lower left corner of the video), loops around its little roundabout, and exits on the same road it came from.

For first timers passing through that "roundabouts-in-a roundabout" would be a scary task especially for North Americans 😂 & new drivers.
Yet from Aerial drone footage the moment of passing vehicles from all directions captured in "top down " view makes it feel easy for drivers ( which i suppose is if one passes through it 4-5 times ) .
Actually it is a great way to make drivers learn roundabout concept through "top down " looking videos .

Is this damn thing still in use? I had to cross it back in 2006 with a European car ( the stirring wheel was on the left side ) and I manage to do so with the help of my partner who had made a map of it and told me where to go. In the style get there on the left side, stop here, on this one we get clockwise .... such kind of instructions....lol
What helped of course a lot was the fact that my car had foreign plates and so the other drivers stopped or kindly let me pass. Otherwise it would have been impossible to cross this crazy roundabout without causing a collision as it is impossible to comprehend who is going where and when you are into this roundabout you have the notion that the cars are coming from all directions. I don't know and I can't even imagine who was the idiot who designed this thing.
Wow, this 'magic roundabout' really needs to be consigned to history.....it must be terrifying even for cars. I bet cyclists avoid it completely.
Why don't they just get rid of all the mini roundabouts, and enlarge the bigger central one, to make one big roundabout.......like they'd do anywhere else in the UK. Never seen anything like this anywhere - it's beyond crazy.
(Lete reply but) if you made it one big roundabout it wouldn’t work nearly as well. Currently, the drivers with right of way are those entering or leaving the magic roundabout through five different roundabouts, making those drivers on the outer and inner ring give way. If you made one large roundabout, right of way would shift to one single, central roundabout, which could overcrowd the system with all the cars circling it at once.
I also don’t think it’s nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. A roundabout is a roundabout, and if you have 5 in succession or not shouldn’t matter. Just focus on following traffic rules, one roundabout at a time.

I totally would cycle this. Just give way to the right and stay close to a car going your way for extra visibility/shielding

I've just checked with Google Maps. It's called "The Plough" roundabout. Sounds more like the name of a pub :)

Traffic considerations for five intersecting streets. Seems to manage the flow better than the US-standard solution of five stop signs and assuming people will actually go in turn (and it makes everyone stop).

This roundabout in Swindon is a completely insane idea. I don't think this roundabout is really needed. Seems like in UK is obsession for roundabouts. Just waste of money from taxes what are paid by everyone who live and work in UK. There are more important matters to allocate money like NHS , schools , public safety , public transport and etc.
