I use to make my own cotton based paper. How I made it fountain pen friendly was to brush on gelatin. Just unflavored, no color gelatin. It worked every single time. I brushed it on fiber paper in manufactured journals and it worked there as well.

You started talking about Sepia inks and I thought for sure you'd mention my favorite: Manjiro Nakahama Whaleman's Sepia from Noodler's Ink. Great having you two back, especially now that you're together (the timing and interaction is definitely improved). Two of the stories in this episode struck a chord with my 40-ish years of fountain pen experience:
I used Pelikan Brilliant Brown as my "standard" ink from the late 70s for probably 30 years, and it was always called "*Brilliant* Brown". Definitely struck me as an odd use of the word "brilliant", but I loved the color. Yay browns!
My wife and I got each other a pair of matching Sheaffer Targa fountain pens as wedding gifts back in 1989, both with gold nibs. Hers is a fine and mine is a stub (slightly wider than my 1.1mm nibs, so maybe 1.2mm?). I've used that gold stub for over 30 years and its still one of my favorite pens in my collection. I'm guessing it has some kind of tipping material, however, as the otherwise gold nib changes to a "silver" color for the last mm or so.
    Keep up the great work!

I truly hope this reaches Brian. I am a hobbyist woodworker. So, I have an appreciation for fellow woodworkers who "nerd out" about wood species, their origins, their density, and what you can potentially make out of them. I made my wife's engagement ring box out of black walnut and inlayed her zodiac sign with crushed turquoise. As an anniversary gift, I used curley Red Cherry, glued it up into a 3'x3' square. In select spots, I cut out five, 4"x6" pictures holes for pictures of us. I burned in a cherry blossom tree and then inlayed cherry blossom flowers with a purple resin with essence of pearl. It also has flower pedals falling throughout. There are more, but I just wanted to say I appreciate Brain's knowledge and appreciation for various wood types.

I drip the last bit of ink before a cleaning into a little plastic paint cup and let it dry to use with brush pens, often just putting multiple drip out of similar shades. When it's been larger than a few drips it dries with the sheen on top and the shimmer on the bottom, making them a lot of fun with a lighter toned ink brush pen to add lots of shading and tone with more control of the sheen/shimmer placement.

Back to the Pencast -- brown ink segment. Oh my goodness, I bought the Diamine Roasted Chestnut and I LOVE it. In my Grandad's Parker 51 I use only black Quink, because that is all he ever used, and as he bequeathed his pen to me (when he died a few years ago at the age of 91 -- I asked for the pen, and he was happy that I should have it), I only use black Quink in that pen. But I have my own burgundy Parker (bought in a kind of homage to him), and I can put whatever ink color I fancy in it. And again, the Roasted Chestnut is just gorgeous and I highly recommend it.

    1. I draw with fountain pens on nice watercolor paper, which is made of cotton. If you are careful, and do what you would anyway to minimize feathering, it works fine. There is a tendency of the paper to tear, so a light touch is imperative.

I have a couple of leather journals and one i have is a moonster leather bound journal that has cotton paper.
I agree that it's not the best paper for fountain pens and also one page is not the other one (probably because it's handcrafted. I don't know, just speculating).
Some of the pages feel great to write on and some pages clog my nib a little bit and it does feathers here and there, but at the same time it's part of the "classic"/"vintage" feeling experience.
Do i prefer the cotton paper over normal paper? Not really. Do i like it less? Not really.
But it's definitely not a work horse paper, but i would still recommend you to try it out.
Positives: vintage/classic feel, unique feel, authentic, dries fast (also negative depends)
Negatives: can clog the nib (cotton hairs), dries fast, some pieces of paper feel better than other ones.
(I use a custom 823 medium nib on it and i would not want to use a finer nib on it)

And I’m not crazy, I promise, but I would actually like if you made it longer! And if you think about it, we used to get 2 Q and As and 4 Write Nows in two weeks, which is combined more hours that a PenCast. I understand if you can’t make it longer, but like at some point for fun could you do like a 3 hour special? Here's one for the brown issue. I was a fat kid (I am a curvy 67 yrs young now) and the only clothing available for us chubbiest came in dark, slenderizing colors like brown, navy blue, and black. I have brown hair and brown eyes that are so dark that I have been told I was full up to here with 💩 . We also had brown paneling on the walls at home and NOW I live in the desert in the southwest. I have an aversion to browns and oranges. For a professional ink I love Noodler's Lexington Gray, and it is waterproof. It has even displaced my Heart of Darkness as my favorite.

Re Pen Cases: I’ve bought a couple of “cheaper” pen cases with elastic bands. One thing I’ve come across is that the backing in the case has stuck to my pens! Another issue has been that the elastic has also stuck to a pen and I’ve had to resort to cleaning the sticky off the pen!! Definitively worth thinking about which case is worth it!

The other is more of my portable pen case, which I'm more willing to take about with me. I haven't noticed any wear and tear on the pens that are in the 24 slot with elastic loops, though they don't get moved around a lot and mostly stay in my designated fountain pen/ink drawer. Nor have I noticed any damage to the pens I keep in my portable pen case, although I don't keep my more expensive pens in it

Question: My lil' cousin (6 or 7 years old) is super interested in fountain pens, what fountain pen would you recommend for a starter like her? She loves blue (yay blue) & brown colours and took interest in my Lamy Vista to see colour of the ink. Are there any other pens that are durable for a young one to use? i love when my book history knowledge from doing a phd in medieval literature actually becomes relevant in the 21st century, haha. re: paper, no matter what the fibre is that's being used to make , what makes it good or bad for ink absorption is actually the sizing--most modern, machine-made papers have some form of internal sizing, and fountain pen-friendly papers usually have additional surface sizing (aka coating). blotting paper, on the other hand, is unsized. (also, i would want my teleportation platform to be in newfoundland, i'm pretty sure)

Brown ink is like Nutella: it works with way more things than you intially would think, and most people love it when they get a chance to try.
I got Monteverde Brown Sugar in a Goulet Surprise Me sample (which I am now suspecting might have been a ploy concocted by Drew), and it has been a gateway drug. After about a page, I needed a bottle. Which I got. As a rule, I try to keep one ink of every color, and not end up with a 'I have seventeen slightly different shades of dark blue' situation. I have four shades of brown. I am actively lusting after at least another two.
When my brother caught me writing with the Monteverde, he called it 'classy, but not in your face'. He then proceeded to mooch some off me and get compliments from our mother on his improved handwriting, which hasn't changed since he was 11. My little sister and cousins 'oooh' if I use Brown Sugar to write labels on my care packages. I hid a sample of it in my dad's stash, before I learned that I am apparently in charge of ordering all his ink and my sample-hiding ways might backfire spectacularly.

How about some cloth pen wraps (rolls) in some solid colors. I have one from Franklin Christoph which holds about 7 pens. It's a gray color. Would love to see y'all carry some.

Yeah, the Pilot Custom 823 is the only brown pen I'd seriously consider. But I suspect that the popularity of the smoke may be because there isn't a wide range of colours available for that model :'(

For Noodler pens, if this Charlie I got for free with some ink is the same smell, it is extremely similar to, if not the exact same, as lot of rubber fishing tackle. Which is fitting. lol

Some experience with tight pen lopes as I have hundreds of pens and I store many of my pens in pen cases with elastic loops over extended periods.
I have found that there are some pens with softer materials that will get marred over time. An example is a the Porsche design P3150 with 2 leather strips on the cap of the pen. The leather now has a permanent imprint on it from the tight pen loop.
The other thing I have found is if there is any inherent weakness in the pen due to the construction or method of assembly especially around the middle of the pen, a tight pen loop will put undue stress on the point of weakness and through time will cause the pen to break into 2. I have had this happen with 2 pens from the same manufacturer who has a known problem in this particular area.
The last point is not mixing pens that have materials that might change over time. I have found that celluloids and ebonite pens should not be kept together. There are off gassing and material qualities that will change the appearance of these pens if stored without air circulation, especially for celluloid pens.

Hey Drew one thing I noticed is that your voice volume swings a lot depending on if you're facing the camera. It's not bad enough that I couldn't understand you or anything, it just seemed to happen very frequently during the new stuff as section a lot when you were (justifiably) excitedly looking at stuff to your right.
    Still a very enjoyable episode!
