Yes, would be great! I've just watched it again and notice that in the nib width options overview the line width of the SF looks slightly thicker than the SFM. (11:12 onwards)
My absolute favorite Pilot pens are the Custom Urushi, Justus 95 and the Silvern. The E95s and the Falcon are two others. Not your fault, I guess, but the Custom Urushi pens (I own the majestic vermillion one) are quite outrageously priced here in the U.S. I bought mine direct from Japan for $900 (incl.shipping). The $600 mark-up in the U.S. is not remotely excusable. It is outright extortionist. edit: forgot to mention that the Custom 845 is very special to me, too.
I love all 16 of my Pilot pens! They never dry out , outside of the 2 retraceable pens , but that's the trade off. I've picked them up after years of not using and they start first line. The nibs write very well, no RR-tracking, etc. They travel quite well, except for the retractable. Pilot may not be a sexy Italian pen, which is damn near impossible to neglect. Pilot has given me a fantastic experience every time.
Great video! Thank you for explaining this! My goal is to acquire the Custom 823 this year (within the next month or so) and the Custom Urushi Vermilion by January 2026 (my 60th birthday)! I’m not sure if I can wait that long!! Thanks again! God bless you!
Brian, You & your team Rock. I purchased from you and I am hooked. Looking forward to the Pilot Custom Urushi Fountain Pen not only adding it to my collection but also enjoy the writing experience. Thank you for the great reviews :)
Hey Brian. Please do a video on all the different grinds that come with the Custom Heritage 912. Would love to see all the different grinds you can get all side by side
Thank you very much for these helpful explanations. I felt always a bit in the dark when it came to Pilot models and nibs. Now there is a bright spotlight available. Again, thanks a lot.
Owner of Custom Heritage 92 here, in broad (comparable to Europeans its, let's say, a kinda of a medium, e.g. a Kaweco medium). Pairing it with "fast" inks like the Iroshizuku line, is the best, the ABSOLUTELY smoothest, feedback-less, hot-knife-in-butter, effortless pen to write I have ever experienced. This pen is a thing of beauty (and got it in Goulet's favourite blue demonstrator accent) and by all that's holy, it *WRITES* . You simply start moving the pen and it glides along the paper, you literally feel *nothing* when using it. This pen made me a long time Pilot fan - and I 've come to appreciate their cheaper offerings like the Metro series. The nib quality is superb - and if you get it in a good price, simply nab one. The integrated piston saves you all the effort and it can write even if unused for months down the line. Do yourselves a favour and try one, you 'll probably will not want to use any other pen ever again.
This is EXACTLY the video I needed. Going to hit up the Pilot table at the Colorado Pen Show this weekend to see if I can try my top favorites. Will bring my notes I made from your video. 😄
I have the 743 with the SF nib. What a joy to use. I chose this model over the 823 for ease of maintenance. The CON-70 converter is relatively easy to clean if you have a blunt nose syringe. Is the 823 has a removable section, then I would whole heartedly switch if you can get the SF nib.
Awesome comparison features on your website. You guys have the best customer service of any company. There are so many other companies that should adopt your customer service practices.
brian thank you so much for this video. i have been filling my custom 823 by dunking the whole nib unit and had no idea i could do it so much more gracefully--especially given i tend to use diamine inks out of their 30ml containers...
This was so helpful!! I wasn't familiar with Pilot at all other than owning an Explorer. I really hope to see more videos where you take one brand and go through their different ones to compare!!
Thanks, Brian!! Very nice and helpful to have an explanation of Pilot's numbering system. I sure love my Pilot pens - especially my 823 Broad and 74 Medium. My E95s (not in this "custom" video) might well be my personal favorite though that changes.
YES YES YESSSSSS To a written demo of the unique nib offerings of the Custom Heritage 912! 11:00 I love all your videos! Great great close up camera work. 11:29
What a great video - the kind I enjoy most as it differentiates the models so I can pin down my choices. Well done, indeed. Goulet Pens is my now go to online pen paradise.
The custom 74 was my first gold nib pen and I couldn't agree with you more in your review of it. Great video overall and I hope we get a video about the nib options!!
Super useful video, thank you Brian! I was kind of confused with the Pilot numbering system, but you've just made things cristal clear. Pilot pens are amongst the best writers, extremely reliable and consistent, extremely pleasant to use. I own a few (Justus 95, resin Falcon, E95S) and they're just so good. I was very impressed by the bounciness of the Vanishing Point, but the form factor just isn't for me. The Custom Urushi, though, is certainly on my list... I might pull the trigger on it one day.
Thanks for this extensive video, the number easter eggs i did not know very cool. I bought my first pen and went with the Custom 823 with fine nib and im happy i did my research, its a dream to write with and really makes me want to use it more everyday :)
Great video, Brian, thank you! Lots of info. And I would also like to learn more about the grinds. Sorry for giving you more to do, as if you don't have enough work 😇 I hope your team can help you out with the video.
I am currently stationed in Japan and have been lucky to get some pens that are not readily available in the US. I snagged up a Pilot Custom 74 with a music nib and I love it. I also was able to snag the Custom Urushi and man...what a beautiful pen. Thanks for the video. I did enjoy hearing about the numbering system.
It is very broad. My cursive does look like calligraphy and makes it look better. I didn’t try it before purchase, I knew I was going to like it and snatched it up. There is a Platinum Music nib in the same store for about $60. I may go and get that one too.
Thanks for the video. A nib grind video would be cool. I love my Pilot Custom Heritage 912 PO. I bought it mainly for my checkbook register and taking quick notes. But I wrote a letter using it and it wrote well. I was using Midori cotton paper and noticed that fingerprints on the paper causes some problems with the PO nib. I try to be conscious of not touching the paper, but I forget occasionally.
Needed now- Brian's deep dive on the 912. I own two of them(FM and SM) and am thinking of getting a waverly. Therefore: Do it, Do it Do it! I would like to see a special comparison being made amongst the soft nibs.
I own the Custom Heritage 912 with the soft fine medium nib, and it’s a dream to write with. Soft, wet, bouncy, with a slight feedback to it. Highly recommended, and more refined feeling than the #5 soft fine medium nib available on JDM Custom Heritage 91s. The 912 is easily the best model out there in terms of nib options.
Terrific comprehensive video! Thanks for the explanation so I can better understand Pilot fountain pens. I love the brand but am hesitant to buy in the more expensive Custom series because I didn’t know how they compared to each other.
Thanks this was really helpful! I'd love to see a video on all the different nib options. It definitely makes sense to not carry broad nibs when they aren't popular for you, but I also wonder if it might be a chicken or the egg scenario. Broad nibs (and double broads when they're available) are my favorite nib sizes, but when a pen comes with those nib sizes and you don't carry them, I tend to buy them elsewhere. I wonder if enough other customers do too, that it would make a difference. Either way, I do really appreciate what you do have available, plus the great videos, customer service, photography, packaging, and website design.
I love the insight for when the nibs were manufactured. Thanks! I have a couple CH92s, which I love, including a FM in transparent blue. Has Pilot discontinued the transparent blue model as far as you know and are they only making the clear demonstrators now? Thanks! 😊
Wonderful overview! A few models missing from this list… Custom Heritage 91, which looks similar to the CH92 but uses a cartridge/converter and should be significantly less expensive. Also Custom 742, which is similar to the CH912 but with rounded finials.
Didn't realise any of these was hard rubber rather than acrylic. That's a pretty high-end material, as by definition it can't be moulded -- they're basically carved from a block of hard rubber. I know from clarinet mouthpieces (generally the same material) that ebonite is really brittle -- you can't drop them. Is it the same with ebonite pens? or does the urushi finish offer a tough outer layer?
This video is so timely! I hear a rumor of a price increase in October 🤔 and I hope to grab 2 custom pens before then 🖊️ 🖊️ please please please do a new video on all the different nibs too! 😊
Really interesting discussion about the various Pilot models. My question is the space rocket in the background, is it from the Gemini or Apollo program?
Love this video survey, thank you for making it. Had to rewatch it of course and then I noticed that (11:12 onwards) in the overview of 912 nib widths the SF line looks thicker than the SFM one, which is surprising. Or is that to do with pressure exerted by the hand of the writer? The soft is flexier after all. I hope one day to be able to compare the two at a pen show.
Yes. I already asked once, but now that you mentioned, I'll ask again. Do the video on all the nibs, please. (Sorry for all the cleaning that will require)
I've already acquired a 912 with a Waverly nib that is fantastic to write with. At some point in the future I'll be looking to get another 912, but with an FA nib.
I love my Custom 823's, all 3 colors, and they are my EDC pens. I do have a question about the 912, with the vast array of nibs sizes and shapes: are additional nibs available for those of us who might like to switch things out?
The custom heritage 92 is my favourite Pilot pen, the fine nib is one of the best I have ever used, I would personally say that it's Pilot's answer to the Pelikan M400, both great pens but the Pilot is the more affordable (at least here in Europe).
@@PhilipAlexanderHassialis I got the medium fine because it was cheaper than the extra fine when I got it new old stock 😅 no regrets! It’s a nice line width for the 5mm grid notebooks I use.
@@heathergleiser basically I want to try one, because every fine I 've used so far by Europeans is simply a scratchy feedbacky thing and I simply hate the sensation. Heck, I paid more than the pens are worth to change my Kaweco medium Sports' nibs to the premium ones with iridium tip to minimize the feedback and the scratchiness. I hope that Pilot will finally make me a F nib user!
@@PhilipAlexanderHassialis F is my usual nib size and I’d recommend a Twsbi Eco or a Sailor Procolor(steel nib cousin of the 1911). I have both and they’re both really lovely and smooth.
The Pilot Custom pens sold in the States all have gold nibs but they do have a steel nib Japanese retail cousin, the Custom NS. The dark blue would be right up your alley.
@@blktauna I’ve seen them pop up on eBay and JetPens has them, think they’re $116. Pilot has some seriously pretty pens that haven’t made it to US distribution.
I've always liked the size 50 nib on the Emperor and I didn't see a need to try the size 30 nib as a consequence, but ever since I tried a Custom Urushi and found it to be much softer than the Emperor's even larger nib I have wondered... what if the Namiki nibs had the same geometry as the Pilot Custom nibs? It really feels like the Custom nibs are much softer because they have wings as opposed to having straight flanks like the Namiki nibs. I'd be so curious to try a size 50 Custom nib.
I love the PO nibs for work and notes writes on almost anything and if you are an EF or UEF writer you will love that is does not vary width. They need to sell us some more nib swap options and colors. I have the CH92f 912po,fa C742po,fm and the C823f along with 2 e95sEFs. Pilot is so consistent. I love on the metro penmenaship prera kakuno and explorer you can swap those steel nibs or get a nib that is not sold in that model. I like mine ultra fine or a stub.
I have a 912 SF and a 743 SFM - the nibs are fantastic and the pens write flawlessly. I just wish that the 912 came in different colors. I made the mistake of handling and trying a Custon Urushi at the DC show last year, and my bank account is groaning at the thought of buying one.
Do you think Pilot will ever do something like a slip and seal cap? I love to have a whole bunch of pens inked up at once and I’ve found that if the pens I use don’t have great seals, they dry out between uses. I love Japanese EF nibs and while my collection started out with Pilot (and vanishing point may still be my one true love), I’ve been moving toward platinum (although my E95s is going strong) with twsbi EF when I want something a little thicker. I would love to add a pilot custom to my lineup at some point but for me they’re too expensive to get one to hope it’ll stay wet long enough for me with how many pens I keep inked. What do y’all think?
I actually have 6 Pilot pens (E95s, Falcon, 912, 823, Justus and Custom Urushi) and they are always inked. Never had a problem of dry ink (the E95s stayed in the closet since January, I just tried it now) They all have a inner cap which doesn’t slip, but perfectly seal the nib, I found even better then the Platinum pens.
I mean...... if its too overwhelming to do the nib comparison for all 15 nibs... I would be happy to do it for you! Just need you to loan me out one of each ;) I won the US exclusive 743 and love it!!!!! The one I won is a medium nib that feels so good but just a little thick for me. I wish it was a little thinner and might have it ground because I have tried the fine nib and its just a hint too much feedback. Both nibs feel great both bouncy just one is a glassy fire hose and one is a slightly feedback pencil feel with bounce. I like the feel of the FA but its not as daily driver friendly for my handwriting. Still a ton of nibs I would love to try but just cant swing it.
This video couldn't have come at a better time. I test drove the Pilot Custom 743 & Custom Heritage 912 for the first time at the recent DC Pen show. My goodness. I almost cried. It's really hard to describe how smooth the nibs on those pens are, and how terrific they feel in the hand. I've been thinking about the 743 in particular ever since. I'm going to have to think up some special occasion to justify purchasing one. Thanks for this video, Brian!!! It really helped explain what these pens are all about
I wonder what happened to the soft #5 nibs, to the Custom 91 and 742 and the B nib for Custom Urushi. If you want to make an “enciclopedic” video, you must mention them and say you don’t stock them
Really interested in a video about all those available nib options. Do it, Do it Do it.
Heck yes, that would be a video I would definitely watch!
Yes please on the nib grind video!
Great summary. Regarding another video, I'd appreciate hearing about the difference between the "soft" nibs and the falcon.
I ♥ Pilot. Thanks for explaining the numbering system for their models and their nibs.
Coming to the comments to say I'm really interested in a video on all the 912 nibs
Yes, would be great! I've just watched it again and notice that in the nib width options overview the line width of the SF looks slightly thicker than the SFM. (11:12 onwards)

I was very surprised when I saw a Pilot Custom 98 review from 2007.
Does number 5 and number 15 provides same writing experience or totally different
And so I learn that my Custom 742's #10 music nib was made in Nov 2023. Cool.
I have a 912 SF and a 743 SFM - the nibs are fantastic and the pens write flawlessly. I just wish that the 912 came in different colors. I made the mistake of handling and trying a Custon Urushi at the DC show last year, and my bank account is groaning at the thought of buying one.
Agree they need to look at sailor and get some color options or sell a kit to swap parts and nibs.
Got my eyes on a 74 and a 743 👀 soon
My absolute favorite is the Custom 823 M nib with Kon Peki. Killer combo.
Never had a problem of dry ink (the E95s stayed in the closet since January, I just tried it now)
They all have a inner cap which doesn’t slip, but perfectly seal the nib, I found even better then the Platinum pens.
Brian is the GOAT
If you want to make an “enciclopedic” video, you must mention them and say you don’t stock them
The last appoint is to the difference between #10 and #15 nibs: #15 is just longer, you can mount an 912 nib on a 845 without problems
