What people really don’t see is the Celtics are at their absolute best when Tatum gets a defender to over step. He doesn’t need to get the assist because after he kicks it out the ball starts moving and they have 4 other guys that know what to do with it and how to attack close outs. it does not matter in all reality.... but Jaylen is thriving as a great number 2 - someone that can step up when all eyes and defense is designed to stop Tatum. So he is an elite 2 - but he is doing this while having Tatum to take a load off of him and a lot of responsibilites.

The difference between Brown and Tatum....when Tatum gets the ball, he likes to get fancy and that allows other opposing players to come to defend, especially since they know that when he does this, he is not going to pass the ball. Brown instead, uses his speed and size to beat his man, which almost makes it impossible to double team him.

JT and JB can both defend Luka. The difference is you can't put JB on their big men and expect him to stop them in the paint and on the glass. JT actually has the size and rebounding ability where that's a possibility and that's exactly what he's done, his primary matchup on defense has been Gafford & Lively and he has done an exceptional job in both aspects. JB is phenomenal in his own right but he's just not as versatile as JT is, that's no knock on him it's just a fact. Part of being the 2nd best player is stepping up and taking over as the #1 guy at times and that's exactly what JB has done so credit to him. He just isn't the better player though objectively

I always said Brown is the next player on ther Celtics. Brown plays offense and defense at a high level. Tatum was pushed to the front of the line. Brown never had the chance to be the first option.
The best player is Jayson Tatum and it really isn't close. It's really simple, all you need to do is look at Dallas' defensive schemes and their priorities. Throughout game 1 and 2, JT has consistently been double-teamed if not triple-teamed on every single drive he makes to the basket; with Dallas forsaking guarding the 3pt line to crash JT on every drive he makes. That tells you all you need to know, since they're scheming to stop JT from scoring at all costs and make everyone else beat them. This clearly shows that Kidd understands Boston's premier offensive weapon, JT, the only player in Celtics HISTORY to average 30+ppg in a season. Bird hasn't done it. Havlicek hasn't done it. Pierce or KG haven't done it. But JT has. His gravity on the court can't be understated and Dallas has put more effort and emphasis on stopping JT from scoring at all costs than Boston has done with guarding Luka. Dallas' defensive priorities and their actions these first 2 games should tell you all you need to know about who they think is Boston's most dangerous weapon.

I'm glad Stephen A bought up the point about carrying the load. The Celtics are my team but JB has never been double teamed, never average double digit rebounds in the playoffs, or over 4assists in his career. Being the best player is a total package not just scoring. Right now he's more consistent and had getting 5 assist per game which is great for the Celtics.
Luka is 6’7, JB is 6’6, JT is 6’9/10, Gafford is 6’10 and Lively is 7’0. Why am I listing their heights? Well, one key part of the Mavs offense is their lobs. JT has been tasked with staying at the dunkers spot to eliminate the lob threat of Gafford or Lively. It will be senseless asking JT to be the one guarding Luka cos there’s no way JB will be capable of handling Gafford or Lively. People need to understand that the Celtics are playing a team game and are not looking for personal glories.

Tatum can explode on Offense better than Brown on any given night… but Brown gives you more on both sides of the ball more frequently and is typically more efficient offensively as well. The difference between Brown and Tatum....when Tatum gets the ball, he likes to get fancy and that allows other opposing players to come to defend, especially since they know that when he does this, he is not going to pass the ball. Brown instead, uses his speed and size to beat his man, which almost makes it impossible to double team him.

JT and JB can both defend Luka. The difference is you can't put JB on their big men and expect him to stop them in the paint and on the glass. JT actually has the size and rebounding ability where that's a possibility and that's exactly what he's done, his primary matchup on defense has been Gafford & Lively and he has done an exceptional job in both aspects. JB is phenomenal in his own right but he's just not as versatile as JT is, that's no knock on him it's just a fact. Part of being the 2nd best player is stepping up and taking over as the #1 guy at times and that's exactly what JB has done so credit to him. He just isn't the better player though objectively

I always said Brown is the next player on ther Celtics. Brown plays offense and defense at a high level. Tatum was pushed to the front of the line. Brown never had the chance to be the first option.
The best player is Jayson Tatum and it really isn't close. It's really simple, all you need to do is look at Dallas' defensive schemes and their priorities. Throughout game 1 and 2, JT has consistently been double-teamed if not triple-teamed on every single drive he makes to the basket; with Dallas forsaking guarding the 3pt line to crash JT on every drive he makes. That tells you all you need to know, since they're scheming to stop JT from scoring at all costs and make everyone else beat them. This clearly shows that Kidd understands Boston's premier offensive weapon, JT, the only player in Celtics HISTORY to average 30+ppg in a season. Bird hasn't done it. Havlicek hasn't done it. Pierce or KG haven't done it. But JT has. His gravity on the court can't be understated and Dallas has put more effort and emphasis on stopping JT from scoring at all costs than Boston has done with guarding Luka. Dallas' defensive priorities and their actions these first 2 games should tell you all you need to know about who they think is Boston's most dangerous weapon.

I'm glad Stephen A bought up the point about carrying the load. The Celtics are my team but JB has never been double teamed, never average double digit rebounds in the playoffs, or over 4assists in his career. Being the best player is a total package not just scoring. Right now he's more consistent and had getting 5 assist per game which is great for the Celtics.

Luka is 6’7, JB is 6’6, JT is 6’9/10, Gafford is 6’10 and Lively is 7’0. Why am I listing their heights? Well, one key part of the Mavs offense is their lobs. JT has been tasked with staying at the dunkers spot to eliminate the lob threat of Gafford or Lively. It will be senseless asking JT to be the one guarding Luka cos there’s no way JB will be capable of handling Gafford or Lively. People need to understand that the Celtics are playing a team game and are not looking for personal glories.

I’ve always thought Brown was better than Tatum. But let them be successful together. These brothers have put in a lot of work to be here half way to winning their first championship.
This conversation has been going on for a few years now. Tatum can explode on Offense better than Brown on any given night… but Brown gives you more on both sides of the ball more frequently and is typically more efficient offensively as well. You can choose who you want, and there’s no wrong answer… but there’s a small margin that separates who’s the better player. I’ll choose JB, but will never be mad at someone saying JT.
