    Andor is exactly the show Star Wars needs right now. It's deep, mature, and complex. The world building is incredible and the character development is so satisfying. Everything feels fleshed out and meaningful. I love swashbuckling action and adventure stuff too but there is so much more to a franchise this big and Andor delivers it in spades.

      Yup, it’s a big galaxy with plenty of room for content for a wide range of viewers, from the young to the OG (like me) and the casual to the fanatic (like me). No need to always use the same cookie cutter. I only ask that the content is well planned and thought out which has had some big misses in the Disney era. Hopefully Andor shifts that trend in a positive direction going forward.

      Between this show, and "The Mandalorian," I feel as if momentum is starting to build towards Star Wars shows/movies that actually take the fanbase seriously, and simply try to do good things for the overall story, rather than trying so hard to enforce "diversity and inclusion" into the product, at the expense of the classic characters. I believe we are going to start seeing more and more of shows like this, (and Mando) than we see of examples like "Kenobi," or "Boba Fett."

    My favorite part of the series is how the quality of interactions between characters and world building makes the Empire intimidating again, while humanizing the people that serve the Empire. Supervisor Dedra Meero is a great example and I can’t help but find myself rooting for her. She’s become one of my favorite characters.

    • @IsaacKuo
      @IsaacKuo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm so glad that Deedra has a supportive assistant. It shows that the ISB isn't all cut-throat backstabbing and turf jealousy. Having even just one person you can count on really makes a big difference. This is what makes Syril's "prison" feel so real. It's what makes Mon Mothma's isolation feel so awful, and it's what makes her visceral liberation at finding her old friend Tay someone she can confide in so powerful.

    I am reminded recently that Syril was essentially fired from his job at the Corporate Security agency from Blevin... the guy who is at odds with Derdra... perhaps somehow Derdra pays a visit to the Bureau of Standards and bumps into Syril by chance, they somehow share the fact he was let go by Blevins at the ISB, and this makes Derdra want to bring Syril on board... as a means to annoy Blevin. That would be the IN to the Empire... I really don't see Syril working as a Rebel to me... the dude is a ticking timebomb... he's so repressed and needs to prove himself, that would be dangerous in the Rebel faction.

    Small criticisms of 'Andor':
    1) I'd like to see more aliens in key roles
    2) I'd like to see more droids performing service tasks. Like why does Mon Mothma have human drivers and servants, when she's so afraid of spies?
    3) Sometimes the dialogue is a little too familiar to our world. Like "hide the guns" (should have been "blasters") or calling an Imperial fortress an "airbase" (should have been "garrison" or "spaceport" or something). Little things like that.
    4) I think the character of Cassian is a little bland and uninteresting compared to a Mon Mothma or a Luthen.
    Overall I love the show. It's the best Star Wars since Return Of The Jedi.

      ANDOR is in desperate need of some military advisers. Last week’s episode left me cringing as they marched with their weapons facing every direction, despite Cassian warning about “muzzles always facing out” when marching in formation.
      And it’s not just a pet peeve: If 4 guys were marching around incorrectly (with weapons, no less) on a military base, they’d stick out like sore thumbs and probably be apprehended pretty quickly. I left the Army in 1997, but “port arms” still prescribes muzzles to upward left, regardless of position in formation. It seemed as if the director was trying to emphasize how they were carrying their weapons when Cassian made his suggestion and I was waiting for their plan to be revealed by the way they were marching.
      I also couldn’t agree more with your comments on aliens and droids: More please! I was surprised no one mentioned the fake out with the K2 droid? I think I shouted something like “No way?!” when it finally spoke and had a voice completely different than K2SO’s.

    • @thorskywalkerplus

      I would agree with all four of those, though they're by no means deal breakers. The use of 'earth terminology' has thrown me off several times. Also, yeah, more droids and aliens all around would be nice. Especially in a more main character role.

      Agree re aliens, I'd love to see some Rodians! I was wondering if having an alien as a main character might be more expensive than humans acting? Is that something we know about? I feel like I've heard that somewhere (maybe on this channel or Reddit) but I could be totally making that up. And since they're not using the Volume for this show maybe they had to cut in other places? Again, fully making this up but that's one explanation I have floating around in my head

    • @MandoWookie
      @MandoWookie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@meg1827 using aliens in a main role would be much more expensive, unless you go with the 'human alien" cliche of just putting a small cosmetic difference.
      You will note the only main character alien in all of the films so far has been Chewbacca, because the costume for that is relatively simple.
      The only live action show that actually did do legit alien mains that I can recall is Farscape, with the majority of the cast being some level of alien, from the simple painted blue to the full body and face prosthetics, to completely animatronic creature.
      The best you get below that is Worf in TNG and DS9 with full face prosthetics.

    Thor I subscribe to this channel and your other one because you try to be honest and if you didn't Naboo sure as hell would let you know that. People have short memories, Gilroy basically saved KK/Disney's ass in Rogue One. Gilroy told them/her if you want me to do a TV series I want this amount of money, a big production budget and stay the hell out of my way as a show runner. Keeping it real, Rogue One is the best SW movie made under the KK/Disney regime period. The biggest problem with Andor is the division that KK created among SW fans and Andor will suffer in the metrics for that. Thor and Naboo I am a true SW fan, I graduated HS the same year New Hope, we called it SW, was released and I haven't turned back; I have rode with SW through the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Season 2 is promised to be more action centered according to Gilroy but it will also have input from Filoni and Favreau so it may feel more "star wars like" but with the great story telling of Gilroy and buckle up because it will be Bourne like in SW. I fully expect that this season will have it's arc and 2 part finality wanting us to want more. Naboo help Thor to "stay on target".

    This is a great series. Looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. You really feel the oppressive nature of the Empire with this series and I have really enjoyed it so far. The reports of the show's ratings have been all over the place, and I believe that it's due to several factors, being 1. Competition within the target audience from other streaming series, 2. Fan acceptance of Andor as "Star Wars," 3. Fan backlash from what we got with Obi-Wan and the Book of Boba Fett, 4. Fan avoidance. 5. Andor is not a visible character that general audiences would know, such as Darth Vader or Obi-Wan. Since I'm not sure how much room I have to write, I will tackle perhaps the most complex factor..
    2. Fan acceptance - is this truly Star Wars? For me, that is the question of What is canon? all over again.
    What has been considered as canon has changed over the years. At first, George Lucas considered only what he did in the movies as canon, and hardly gave works such as Splinter of the Mind's Eye and the Thrawn Trilogy a second thought. Then George kind of comes around to the idea of Coruscant, and before you know it, that is the name of the galactic core of the galaxy that appears in the Prequels (modeled after Trantor in Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series) instead of Had Abbadon, which appeared in early drafts of Return of the Jedi. George pretty much completely ignored the EU and Lucasfilm had to make a statement calling those stories "Legends," even though they contain some excellent stories, some of which were written very well. Would George consider Rogue One as canon, and therefore by extension, the character of Andor? Obviously, Disney Star Wars would consider both Rogue One and Andor as canon, but agree with George on the "Legends" books. So, the entire Children of the Jedi thread of novels is ignored by both George and Disney, and we get the Disney version of what the children of the Jedi would be with the Sequels, even though we get the hint that George would've done something different. Disney has shown a preference as well when it comes to what is canon. Take, for instance, the upcoming Tales of the Jedi, which will tell its own story about the fate of Yaddle, and compare that to the comics, which get no respect whatsoever as far as being canon from anyone except it's readers and fans. When we get Disney writers and directors who seemingly could care less what is considered as canon and write whatever they want (Tony Gilroy famously saying that he's not a Star Wars fan), what is a fan like you and me supposed to do when we are presented with something like Andor and posed with the question of whether we like it or not? Since the whole idea of "Star Wars is Star Wars" doesn't get the support that it needs from George and Disney - that everything (including the comics) that has been created thus far under the Star Wars banner is truly part of Star Wars, then the fanbase can hardly be to blame when it picks and chooses what IT wants (you and me individually) to be canon, which may be different from what Disney wants us to consider as canon and what George wants us to consider as canon. So there you have it. You can either take Andor or leave it. I choose to take it, because I like it. Therefore, Andor is canon for me, just like the Thrawn trilogy of books from the 1990s and Mara Jade is canon for me. We, as fans, get to pick and choose our individual canon in Star Wars on a person by person basis, and I choose to like this Andor series.
    Disney will continue to have to deal with the issue of fan acceptance, especially if it seeks to rewrite something that, in the points of view of the fans, is something where a story has already been established. Andor is a prequel type of story, so it ever runs the risk of being something that may be challenged, depending on how far it takes the characters.
    Now, let's consider something for a moment, as a parallel of sorts to the Game of Thrones series. Let's say that George R.R. Martin finishes his famous book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," but writes a different conclusion to his series than what was depicted, with mixed reviews, within the HBO TV series. At that point, what is canon? Is it was George R.R. Martin wrote, or is it what is presented on television? Star Wars fans have it backwards - we've been asked to accept as canon what is on film instead of what is written in the books. Therefore, since Star Wars fans have a choice between 'mirror universes,' so to speak, we get to pick and choose our own personal canon.

    At first I felt that Cassian's arrest at the end was a little jarring and odd but now I think it's another example of show's amazing writing. Everything thus far in the show has been so weighty and interconnected, but here Cassian just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. He didn't get lucky. The space Florida setting and music added to the juxtaposition. It's perfectly ironic for him to get arrested for nothing after recently pulling off the heist, and for him to feel the consequences of their actions after he thought he got off free. _Regarding the Mothma family_
    I don’t think father or daughter will “turn in” Mon Mothma. It seems they are concerned only with their wealth and station on Coruscant. I’ll speculate the intra-family conflict will intensify if Mon’s actions begin to threaten the status quo. Turning Mon in to the ISB would _certainly_ threaten the easy lives they lead, but I wouldn’t expect such a clumsy response from her husband? Unless, of course, that’s all that was left to his disposal. I would expect any member of Mon Mothma’s family to employ are more nuanced strategy in maintaining their way of life.

    I'm loving Andor ... most of my Star Wars Loving friends have been skipping Andor
    I'm thus promoting to my Star Wars Loving Friends ... you have to watch Andor ... so good.
    If Star Wars wants to expand, you need both media that is great for the older fans (40+) and the children and grand children of the people who have loved Star Wars decades.
    I've managed to get my kids to watch the core 6 movies (except #3, which is next) and I encourage them to get into the Clone Wars (and rebels after #3) yet they are not of an age I would do Andor or Rogue One with them yet. One day I will and look forward to it, but not now.

    I’ve absolutely been loving the series so far. It’s been my favorite Star Wars content since coronavirus came back and the Mandalorian was amazing.
    I am worried however, since you talked about Lucasfilm not respecting the books and comics, that the new Thrawn novels will be completely disregarded when he is brought into the live action shows. I really love those books and what they set up for the future of Star Wars, do you think they’ll fold the books into the shows story?

    The Gilroy (yes, all THREE of them) have been the best talents Lucasfilm has ever hired not just since the Disney acquisition, but since the OT. This show has better writing than everything in the dark age of the prequels. And I wasn't among those who had the best first impression initially. As soon as I see the piss joke in episode 1, I went "here we go again". But then it slowly creeps in, dialogue stays sharp and riveting, continuity-destroying plot holes are still absent, characters are well defined and don't act against their defined motivations, every actors on the screen brought their A game aside from a few who settled for their B+ game. The Gilroys even trust us to notice the nuances in the script, like how Bix made a major fuckup by not just running past the corporate cops, but instead turned her heels and ran the other way, which made her stood out from the crowd. This is the kind of technique that audiences of spy thrillers are well-educated on, and the Gilroys trust us to know this too. What is this? Star Wars writers that don't treat their audiences like dummies? Oh my god, where have these 3 guys been throughout the 2 dark ages of the prequels and the sequels?

    I think we might be misreading the daughter. It wasn't until Mon's conversation with her banker friend Ty, that I realized how well Mon's public facade was. To the outside, she could be coming across as pro-Empire because she's an Imperial Senator. May haps, the daughter is more anti-empire and hence she doesn't approve of her mother's politics, thus her low grade animosity.

    I’ve really enjoyed Syril’s arc so far because he’s like a brand new butter bar 2LT in the Army. He thinks he’s doing the right thing, but he’s really not. Syril goes after Andor, but he really should’ve been investigating the two employees that died. The Chief Inspector called it how it was. They were in a brothel while on duty and “the expensive one that they shouldn’t have been able to afford,” already committing “dismissible” offenses. They literally died while trying to rob Andor. The Chief Inspector was cool letting them at least pretend they died helping someone. If Syril really wanted to do the right thing, he would’ve investigated why they were in a brothel on duty, who else they’ve been robbing , and posthumously dismissed them for bad conduct.

    Andor is what Star Wars needs. If only this kind of quality and care had been put into Kenobi. In the comments sections of videos leading up to Kenobi, there were plenty of comments about how what we were hearing about the show was giving out a bad vibe. That turned out to be very accurate. Now we have Andor with multiple videos praising the show and lots of comments in each video about how they enjoy the show and why. And yet there are lots of comments from people saying they won't watch it because they've given up on Disney. That's frustrating. Those of us urging people to watch the show aren't asking you to trust Disney, we are asking you to trust us, your fellow SW fans. Invest two hours and watch the first three episodes, which form one arc. If you still don't like it, so be it.

      I can say that Kathleen Kennedy doesn't understand SW that's for sure but there's a writers and directors who do understand. So it's all about the perspective. I personally would delete sequels, Kenobi and few more projects but Andor except for the LGBTQ now canonised in the SW everything else is actually a masterpiece and I can actually explain why it is. And let me tell you that I have been grown up on the originals, prequels came when I was over 20 for example and I have read the books and watched everything that exist.

    Although George Lucas says Star Wars is about families and people, that’s absolutely true and Andor reflects that, but also at it’s core, it’s about war. Andor does well to follow George’s methodology to be an allegory of our own current real world situation. The government should not be trusted and freedom isn’t something we are necessarily born into. I’m sure there will be enough flash and bang to get the youngins into it and sell some toys. There are several I want myself. This series feels like a triumph after what we have endured earlier this year alone. The pew pew crowd need to see it and appreciate it.

    @paulhirons5474 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's my two pennies' worth... I think Andor was *such* a change of pace and *such* a different way of making Star Wars (in terms of character depth, socio-political nuance etc) I think it may have jarred with a lot of people in the beginning. Many are used to the conventional structures of Star Wars and, heck, the often repeated (ad nauseam, let's be honest) tropes: the wise guide, the quest, the father-son/daughter relationship, the mega-weapon... I could go on. Star Wars badly needed to produce something different, and Andor is most definitely it. Some have said, 'ah it's slow because it's a TV series and TV series like to draw things out'. I really disagree. Andor is what it is because of Gilroy's plotting, characterisation and dialogue - quality, adult conversations about complex things staged by complex, flawed human beings. And that's maybe what I'm enjoying most about this series - it deals with models of leadership, protest and the machinations of society in such a fantastically nuanced way. I like the fact that I'm cheering for Meero as much as I was for Nemik. Every character is as flawed as the next, whether they're on the 'good side' or the 'bad side'. As you say, this is Disney+'s version of Game Of Thrones, and its pacing and characterisation are really paying off now - the slow build-up has really allowed us as viewers to get to know these characters and understand them and their motivations (all extremely plausible and relatable, by the way). That means now we're invested in them have much deeper connections with them, and now, as the stakes get higher and higher, the slow burn turns into real heightened and intensified jeopardy. To those who say 'this isn't SW' I understand, but I feel that's a narrowminded view. I'm an original trilogy lad, and I thoroughly hated the prequels. However, I don't begrudge anyone for liking them. I must say that Andor is a welcome part of the SW galaxy, and there really is room for different styles of storytelling. In this respect, Disney has to be applauded for greenlighting something so different and so bold. We're getting Ashoka, Mando, Skeleton Crew et al soon, and they will no doubt revert back to what we're used to SW being. But for now, Andor is a thoughtful, brilliantly acted and written series that may just enhance Star Wars rather than destroy it as some have bizarrely predicted.

  • @JJFLUNARMAN

    You’re right about the state of SW. Many people tuned off from it SW after BOBF and Kenobi due to the bad storytelling and execution which is a shame. I think Lucasfilm are learning the hard way by not making any further TV shows that have legacy characters at the forefront. 1. The next projects on the pipeline like Ahsoka, Mando season 3 and Skeleton Crew indicates this shift.

    It is a brilliant show overall, but as great as this show has been and hopefully will continue to be, this was the first episode that left a sour taste in my mouth.
    First of all, I loved everything having to do with Coruscant and everything to do with Ferrix. There was A LOT to love about this episode.
    Nonetheless, I feel like they dropped the ball at the end. The arrest-scene really didn't work for me. It irked me how casual Andor was about the whole thing, even jesting about waiting here for the Shoretrooper so he could go chase down the actual perps. This is not the same Andor that got stopped by the two cops in Episode 1. Where was that same tension, that same sense of impeding trouble? Instead, they played it out for levity and had Andor behave like cool-as-a-cucumber Han Solo. That was especially jarring coming in the same episode that showed us the flashback about what happened to his "father". Andor knows first hand how quickly you can get into massive trouble with the Empire just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Considering that flashback, this scene could have been extremely dramatic, as Andor finds himself in a similar bind. Instead, they undercut their own stakes by playing this scene for levity. Generally, not the best idea to play a scene that amounts to an (in this case) innocent bystander being choked by a law enforcement officer for levity instead of trauma...
    Again, lots to love about this episode, but that ending... oof.

    I'm disappointed that this show is not getting maximum viewage right now. But I think that number will increase over time. What hurts "Andor" is its' timing. It comes out just as Amazon is throwing "Rings of Power" at us, and also when HBOMax is throwing "House of the Dragon" at us. And while only one of those two shows is actually any good, the advertising for both of those series is so much more incessant, and noisy, than anything we are getting from "Andor." I agree with Thor. Over time, I think this show will pick up steam, once there is no more competition. I just hope that Season 2 doesn't get canceled, because of the low viewership numbers. That would suck. And would also pretty much set Star Wars, as a whole, back again.

    I hope Andor's style will inspire other writers/producers to focus on the mature, slow-burn format for series, but I don't know if other writers/producers are vested enough in style and quality to understand how masterfully this series was done. Instead, we'll probably get some weak attempts to copy the style that lack the substance of Andor. Sadly, it will probably come down to what the whole fanbase thinks of Andor. Most of us love it, but the 'action-only' crowd and general viewers who are so used to non-stop (often mindless) action that they will drag down opinion of the series and I fear the bean counters at Disney will only see viewership numbers and media hype instead of seeing what the diehard fans think of it.
