Super nice. I guess that long exposures make everything looking 100 times better. You would never think that the highway can be so nice. As for being safe at night - a fellow photographer was attacked in Glasgow a few weeks ago and all his gear was stolen. It's a real shame. So you need to be careful.

Back in the 1970 s I used to get some fantastic results in Sheffield City centre at night. Of course we only had film then and a night exposure calculator which was a cardboard contraption to calculate the apature and shutter speed. The photos of the City Hall with light trails in front of it gave the image a three dimensional look and of course the multi coloured Goodwin Fountain that then existed by the Town Hall. I like the starburst effect you got in your pictures, we used to use a filtre for those. I have to say that I haven't tried long exposure night shots with digital but Devon is a very dark and boring place at night. Well done for finding a worthwhile location.

A friend of mine did this and someone phoned the police as they thought he was going to jump. The police turned up and had a chat to him and was ok with what he was doing but they gave him a bit of advice to ring the police when he was going to do this again and let them know so if someone phoned up they will know what you are there for and not waste their time in turning up. Thanks Gary, I didn’t dislike that building to the right. Was it even there from your earlier video a few years ago - I don’t remember it? I did some light trails on a small road in winter with snow banks on either side of the road. The challenge there was waiting for a vehicle in each direction at more or less the same time to get both headlights and tail lights. Surprisingly, that didn’t happen very often on that road. The road also had a nice S-curve, so worked well in the end and I had no buildings to contend with, just some trees and snow banks on both sides.

Thanks Gary. I really enjoyed joining you on the shoot. Great tips and explanations. Minor point but perhaps emphasizing 'why' you selected 2" self-timer to avoid/reduce camera shake. Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it. I really appreciated seeing a couple of your favourite photos, love the tower lights!. My favourite F32, ISO 100 at 240 seconds for the combo of the tower lights/starbursts and night sky
I did chuckle though as you spent all your time talking about the horrible building to the right so you went to 'portrait, but then during the shoot your were back in landscape talking about that 'bad' building :-)
Night time is great it seems but as mentioned, in the winter months an early morning shoot would also work, especially for those of us living in the northern latitudes.

Great video Gary, I remember the video you done there last time, bit out of the way for me that but I’m 5 minutes from the M61 near the Bolton Wanderers Stadium which I’m sure you’ve passed many times. Been a while since I’ve done any Light Trails, mainly down to having my driving license revoked last year after being diagnosed with Sleep Apnoea, DVLA have had my application since the 6th January after being told I can drive again but still waiting, took them 4 months to send a form out.
Still found the tips very worthwhile as I’m going to be doing some Wire Wool Photography soon, just waiting for a night I’m not too knackered and also with a nice moon
