I am only perturbed by the fact that I can't give this video more thumbs up. This man is a dying breed of master craftsmen who's knowledge will be lost in the next generations. I'm reminded of when our current rocket scientists had no idea hew to build the rocket that took us to the moon because, while the schematics were available, the personal knowledge was not, and that made all the difference. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PLUMBER (*from an IT geek).

I really love how much wisdom we get from what some would consider a mere “plumbing video” Especially what he says about the need of talks into what a professional is, and his wise conclusion that if you’re able or capable enough to charge for what you do you’re a professional. That’s gold, pure gold in a time where degrees are so estimated, thank you for this

Thank you for mentioning the angle stop distance from the wall. I work with guys who put them tight. Then to change something I have to cut the escutcheon off to get the compression nut out of the way in order to remove the ferrule. I always leave at least enough room so that you can push the nut out of the way of the ferrule.
The trick I use to break tile is a wood chisel. Because of the sharper edge on them, it almost works like scoring it. I’ve found that I usually break off what I want or less compared to a cold chisel that is more blunt and more likely to crack more tile.
PS you know a carpenter labeled the video when they call it trim plumbing.

    • @kozemchuk

Phil’s story reminds me of my own experience a few years ago when I was doing demo on a deck so we could install composite material later that week. I had my big, red demo bar in hand and was prying up the rotted OSB when I woke up on the ground. Turns out the rotten OSB gave out too quickly and that red bar connected with my forehead. I was rushed to the urgent care and they called for a helicopter, thinking this was worker’s compensation insurance. After staying overnight in a neurological trauma ward, they sent me home with a severe concussion. The insult to injury was the $40,965 bill for my 30 minute flight! Just like Phil, they didn’t let me fly the chopper. Good times!

    > shower fixtures are now inaccessible
That's why I installed access hatches on the opposing walls for our showers. I am a total amateur when it comes to plumbing work, and it's such a load off my mind knowing that I can easily get at my work if anything goes wrong. And unless you go looking for them, you'll never know they're there; one's in my daughter's closet, the other is behind my office door.

Loving the Blue Monster pipe dope. Love their tape too. My top 3 dopes are Gasoila, Blue Monster, and Great White. Over here in SC we typically prefer wax for toilets, I know I do and most guys I've met do by far. Just more tried and true and less reliant on compression than the rubber, plus here toilet flanges are typically set on top of the finish floor. I could definitely see the bonus to a wax-free system for whole home backup issues or plunging toilets though. Love that you dont prime the PVC inside. It's not code to here for DWV under 4" and it makes life a whole lot easier when peeling a flange or other fitting. I know the benefits of primer and use it most the time but inside a home, outside of a wall, I'm not a fan. Good work Phil

It's interesting watching this episode again after seeing their very recent video highlighting some of their mistakes. Knowing the pot-filler leaks somehow after their open house is foreshadowed with Phil saying at minute 6 that there's no overflow for it and having a shut-off (2 in this case) is important for the home-owner. Bummer it leaked with no one in the house and thus it wasn't caught quickly.

Most of the toilets I see around here are hanging toilets, is it common to have standing toilets in the US? Upsides of a hanging toilet, far easier to clean under/around it and it looks better since most stuff is hidden. Downside, it's much more fragile and it's harder to do maintenance.
