💥UPDATE: The smells we were experiencing from the exhaust vent were totally user error. We did not fill the solids chamber with enough coco coir! We refreshed the solids chamber with new coco coir filling it to within a 1/2 inch of the agitator bar. No more smells!
I am now completely satisfied with the placement of the exhaust vent and do not think the extra effort is needed to connect it to the black tank vent stack! - Dennis ✌️

I really recommend starting off with the coco coir very dry. After I wet the brick and break it apart, I let it sit in a bucket and dry for at least a couple days. Before I did this I had issues with the contents becoming wet and smelly even with little use.
Thanks for everything here btw...this is SUPER helpful. We just ordered one. I have a vent location puzzle. I can try to run the vent hose entirely vertical but it could be more work than I want. I can also easily vent it to the side of the truck camper, basically into the wheel well area. But that side of the truck is under the awning we will use at times. Any new advice after having this thing for another 3 mo?

In your case I would consider the grey or black tank vent stack idea IF you have easy access to either pipe. You will need 2 vent fan housings and also to make sure both fans are blowing the correct direction.
The Morton's on the Move channel has an install video where they used this method. Just incase you want to get an idea of what that looks like. *Caveat they went the extra mile of removing the black tank entirely, which is very unnecessary. So, just concentrate on what he did to run the vent line.
Installing it this way will give you the benefits you want from a vertical install without having to drill additional holes.
The wheel well area is not a bad idea. But, I honestly wouldn't want our vent any closer to our patio area than it already is.
The vent doesn't smell nasty. But there will always be a wet soil type of odor no matter what. Plus, if you use vinegar to rinse the liquids diverter after use (recommend) you will definitely smell that for a few seconds if you're outside on the patio. That would be the only thing I can think of that would keep me from installing in that location.
You will barely notice odors as long as you rehydrate your Coco coir on the drier side like Tuning Spoon suggests. I don't let mine sit out. But I do break it up by hand and barely rehydrate. Like just enough water for the coir to not be dusty.
Once I've rehydrated I add an 1/8 scoop of happy campers black tank treatment. Airhead recommends using a powder drain treatment that you can find at most hardware stores. I already had a can of Happy Campers so I used that instead and it does seem to help diminish vent odors.
I seriously have to have my nose within 6 inches of the vent and actively TRY to smell anything!
I'm not sure if this rant will help you make an immediate decision on installation location but hopefully the food for thought will point you in the right direction.

Hi.. Just ran across your Channel. You did a real nice job going over composting toilets. I have a natures head. Your blooper comment at the end about the urine is pretty important. It’s those trips to the toilet in the middle of the night that can do it. You are wasting your money using plastic bags that decompose. Unless you’re using your own composting pile. Items that go to a landfill are buried under so much weight there is no air getting to them to aid composting. They have done core samples at landfill sites and come up with things like heads of cabbage and bagels that were at least 20 years old and still look like they did when they were put into the site. I have subscribed. Thanks for the info.

Hello! I used an airhead for a few year on my boat. I tried different composting mediums, and also struggled breaking the coconut fiber blocks. My favorite medium by far was wood saw dust. It was cheap, easy to find and easy to put into the airhead, since it didn’t have to be broken like the coco-bricks. I applied it dry, so it would dehydrate the solids faster and for longer time. Also, the wood dust smelled nice. Cheers!

I am old but I would find it so difficult to separate no 1&2. So much cleaner and more eco friendly, but even though I do not eat meat any more and avoid plastics as much as I can, my water closet toilet is for me a must have, everyone does what makes them feel ok.

We love our Airhead composting toilet. I agree with the reasons to purchase this over the other brand - especially the ease to remove the pee pot and the 'real' toilet seat. It really is odor free which surprises anyone not familiar with the concept. The 'woodsy' smell of the solids filter reminds me of a drive through the Redwood Forest.

Thank you for the very informative presentation. This type toilet is new to me, since I put in a recirculating 12 volt marine toilet in our 15' camp trailer circa 1976.

@@EatSeeRV It had an initial charge of water and blue chemical which was recirculated through a filter with each "flush." When the tank reached full, I would open the drain valve through the trailer floor and empty into a dump station or sewer fitting. Not as eco-friendly as the composting cassette toilets. Now, if the inventors could just figure out how to turn the liquid waste back into at least safe irrigation water ... like the International Space Station, maybe? Take care.

Great video Liz and Dennis! We installed our Airhead CT at the beginning of summer and love it. Emptying the pee tank every couple days can be a hassle but we plan at some point to plumb it directly into the black tank. We agree, no smells. We were skeptical prior to buying, I mean we're pooing into a bucket after all but it's really true, no smells. Thanks for the great video, we can pretty much agree with everything you said. Try this if you hate cleaning the compost toilet.
We just returned from our two week trip using the newly installed Seperette, cost $160. We have a class A motorhome and always disliked the standard toilet for a few reasons. The direct hole to the black tank when flushing, the water waste when flushing and knowing there was a tank of crap and urine we were dragging around with us until we found a dump station. I built the very simple box for the Seperette seat product and saw dust compartment. The Seperette simply seperates the urine as a compost toilet does. You supply a 5 gallon bucket for poop and a container for urine, a gallon jug usually. I was able to find a rubber cap for the 3 inch black tank opening and cut a hole in it the size of the included hose for the urine. I didn’t want to deal with the urine bottle, because I heard that stinks much worse after a couple of days than poop. So the hose for urine drains into the black tank which I now share with the gray tank, almost doubling my gray water storage. The urine mixes with gray water, and that gray water is actually safe to drain in into the environment. Just be cool and use biodegradable soaps for washing yourself and dishes. The poop simply goes into the bucket lined with a plastic bag. You put sawdust, peat moss or coconut husks in the bottom of the new bag and on top of poop. I drilled a 2 inch hole in the floor for a small computer fan which vents consistently and draws a very minor amount if power and cost less than 2 dollars. When the poop bag is full it is leagel and safe to simply toss in any trash can. The smell that does exist post pooping is venting out and once poop dries the odor diminishes almost to nothing anyway. The urine hose in my set up naturally forms a “P” trap which eliminates any smell coming from the tanks, we all know gray water still stinks. After urinating we spray a few spritzes of 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water in the urine area of the Seperette to neutralise the urine odor from the trap. I don’t need to visit a stinky dump station ever because my gray water and urine is actually bennificial to plants so I drain it in a convenient spot when I find one. I now have 100 gallons of waste water storage and use much less due to no flushing. We experienced zero smell from the bucket or the p trap urine tube on our two week trip. We don’t have remove anything other than a plastic bag of poop and sawdust from the rv, poop not even visible through a clear bag . We don’t have to clean the toilet as with expensive compost or cassette toilets. We save water, nurish the planet with our gray water, save dump station money, eliminate the need for sewer trucks running around transporting waste to another facility to process it and…I’ll never go back. Personally, I've been boondocking for 15 years and never really needed a composting toilet. I usually get bored with staying longer than a week, or 10 days in the same place and just drop by a dump station on my way to my next stop. I guess if you have a very small black tank this might make for a better deal. There are sites on the internet that list all the dump stations in the US. It seems like more work to go through than just dumping my tanks. I've developed a simple and easy system for dumping my tanks and never have a problem doing it. And I keep a container of baby wipes in my RV basement for when I'm through, even though I never get anything on my hands. cleaning out that composting toilet is far more work and mess than dumping a black tank. Most people just wear rubber gloves for that anyway. If I've got to dump my gray tank anyway, I might as well dump my black tank.
Dumping your gray tank at your campsite may not be harmful, but it sure makes for a muddy campsite for the next campers.
You’re right about the exhaust, it gives gas fumes it’s best to put it on the roof 💝

I currently have a nature’s head and LOVE it. In my case, I connected the exhaust to the black tank vent. So it vents out the roof through an existing system. I will be purchasing a new, small, Class C next year and was debating about what brand of composting toilet I wanted to use. After watching your video I think I will get the Air Head instead for two reasons. First, the smaller footprint makes a big difference. Second, in a tight space popping out the liquids tank is pretty inconvenient. Thank you so much for your great review.

I've been in the market for one these toilets for a while. Though the price is a challenge, in my case, the biggest challenge is the footprint because is going to go in a sailboat. Also, urine breaks down when mixed with water so occasionally dumping your urine in the grey water tank is not a sin. The fan exhaust, would have been better using the original toilet vent. Manufacturers suggest the shortest route because their supplied fans are low flow ( measured in CFM) to reduce power usage, and noise, but can be upgraded. Great show.

You've sold me on the composting toilet. I like that it doesn't have to be emptied out more than about once a month, it doesn't smell like a portapotty and I'm glad you mentioned the price. It is pricey, but all quality things are. My only question is does it have a plastic or porcelain bowl?
It's a great alternative toilet option. It's a plastic bowl. All of it other than handles and latches are plastic
We have a Nature's Head! I use baby wipes to clean our top bowl and just underneath trap door! I use vinegar after each liquid use. Also, I put a small amount vinegar in the bottom of the liquid jug each time we dump and restart and it actually helps the liquid smells. My husband and I actually have minimal smells because we drink around a gallon of h2o each, each day.. so, the more hydrated you are the less smells it seems. Anyway, great video!! Maybe one day there could be a compromise head toilet that takes the pros from the airhead and Nature's head and combines them.. like the ease of the latches on the Nature's head and the toilet lids on the airhead..lol!! Just a crazy thought!!

I see that the smell issue has been solved, but what came to mind is that you could have a removable PVC pipe that would raise the odors up over the roofline when you were camping, then taken off and stored on the roof when driving. A helper (low voltage computer/usb fan)fan could also be inside the pipe. There, I got that off my mind! Love the vids!

Perfect timing... I'm installing an Airhead in my Jay Feather this week and have been going back and forth on where to install the vent - rear (easy), roof (more work). I've decided on the roof. You mentioned getting an additional fan housing if you had gone for the roof... why is that?

But, you need the second shroud to reduce the vent line back down to 2 inches in order for you to be able to connect to the vent stack plumbing.

I use peatmoss, comes in 40-80 liters plastbags here, normally used in gardens, I m used to pee before visit toilet, so just need a bucket with a plasticbag, and a toiletseat, dump on my fields, thank you.
When emptying the liquid tank I reccomend using a piece of TP to catch any liquid that might fall onto the ground

Well.... baby wipes and/or paper towels with some cleaner. Just try not to get to much liquid into the solids chamber. If it gets too wet inside the solids chamber you could experience strong musty odors and will need to refresh the solids compartment sooner than usual.

Would it be possible to super clean the black water tank and vent the toilet through the black water tank, utilizing the black water tank vent?
Not to get too personal, but some times when I am boondocking in the National Forest lands, I find it more convenient to just grab my flip flops and a shovel and head into the woods. This saves me so much work dumping and flushing the black tank......I have never tried a composting toilet but there is still Work there....

I've had this very same thought.
The only thing I can come up with is people like us that seek to be conscious of our impact on the environment and can afford to purchase tools to help us lessen our impact are a comparatively small minority of humans. So supply and demand keeps this stuff expensive. I've seen some DIY setups that are pretty cheap but will come with drawbacks that a finished product like the airhead won't have.
Well, watched about six of your videos, I'm a huge fan of many other RV channels my favorite being Trent and Ali and The Fit RV. I wish you guys lots of luck your channel is cool but it's more of a travel and experience site with not much story or adventures. I'll check back as I know your storytelling skills will increase with time and experience.

I'm thinking to buy that toilet and to place the exhaust vent on the roof in order to use a solar energy for the exhaust. I'm not sure of the place ! What do you think about that, I'm worried it will be to long…Thanks for you're explanations.
Try adding baking soda to the composting compartment to help with the wood odor.

Nice RV, what is the year make and model? What kind of toilet did it come with when you bought it? Cassette or compost ?
I have always wanted to know: if you bought a new black tank, could you use it for potable water? If the material it's made from is not food grade and IMHO not safe for drinking water, then could it be used to store washing/bathing water?
My question is is, how do you clean the streak marks after taking a dump if you can’t get the solids wet how do you keep it clean

I think you bypassed a lot of the dumping and cleaning of the solid tank
It's really that simple, flip it upside down into a trash bag and refill. We don't clean it out after each use as more coco choir and solids go back in there. Liquids we dump in the shower, sink, outside, or specified dump area. It's really not that bad. - Liz

Great video, Trying to understand if the Airhead composting toilet is waterproof when you are sitting on the unit. Planning to place the toilet in the shower stall.
You'd want to remove it when you showered.
Imagine how much cleaner all restrooms would if men sat down to pee. The splash on walls is so ridiculous!

I think the Trelino Composting Toilet are must easier to use. You throw #2 in the trash when the bucket is full and there is no mixing..
What do you do about the doo doo streaks in the toilet bowl if you can't get water in the solids area?
4:54 Coconuts do not have byproduct. Everything in a coconut; from the roots to the leaves, are used.
You should have piped it out the bottom if u could have get rid of the crank handle that does nothing put a bag in there then when full toss out bag.
What did you guys do with the black tank? Can you connect to gray to have more space for gray water? If not, Why not use the regular set up , you can dump the black when you dump the gray.
We kept our black tank and use Valtera twist on blade valve to combine the two holding tanks for more grey water storage capacity. amzn.to/39hlpzF

Hello guys, I hope you are doing well. This video got me a little confused. Let's try to put this short... 1. I've seen what dog pee does to yards, it burns it. They have yellow grass spots everywhere the dogs peed. It concerns me that you are dropping a gallon of urine out in the environment because I'm not sure it is friendly to it. I have seen in the past on TH-cam someone talking about NOT dumping your pee in the environment. What is your take on that, please? 2. Just to make sure, when you empty the number 2 bucket, do you spread it around or do you leave it in a pile? 3. I clean the bowl of my toilet after every number 2. This would add water to the number 2 bucket and you said not to have liquid added in there. How do you clean the bowl waterlessly? I love your channel and enjoy all your videos. Very curious and lots of good questions! Definitely not a good idea to pour all of the liquids container in one spot in nature. We normally avoid that unless it's truly out in the middle of nowhere and we can spread it out in multiple places. The solids container gets emptied into a trash bag (our composts over time) then in a dumpster or trash receptacle. We clean the toilet bowl with cleaner and a paper towel. It doesn't get as dirty or stained because it is waterless. Hope that clears some confusion up! Thanks for watching and safe travels - Liz

Is it possible to place a plastic bag inside the solids compartment to help keep it clean? That way you would only have to lift the bag when full, and wouldn’t have to put the bag over the top of the full solids compartment and flip it over to transfer the solids from the compartment into the bag?
I don't think it would be possible. The bag would likely get bound up around the agitator. There are other toilets that use a bag system that other folks have commented about, C-Head I believe is the name. I haven't done any research on that model though so I can't speak on it. - Dennis ✌️
You can break up the coco coir after you add water, easier.
How much does it cost to change the toilet to compose toilet and how was done?
If you have a wet bath(shower toilet combination) how well would a composting toilet work in there? Would it fit? Would you have issues with the shower?
It can work in a wet bath. The Airhead toilet would also be (IMO) the better choice for installing in we locations as the 12v electrical fan and wiring are installed at the exhaust vent (instead of on the side of the toilet, like the Nature's Head ) and the liquid tank stands alone ( instead of resting inside a holding bucket that will fill with water when you shower).
The only modification challenge that comes to my mind is how to seal the hole of the existing flange for the down pipe from the original toilet so that the shower pan stays watertight. Which I'm sure is the concern you are voicing about the shower in your comment.
The Fit RV channel installed an AirHead in their Winnebago Travato's wet bath. I don't know if they made a detailed install video or not that may shine light on the flange/downpipe modification. But, it's worth checking out their videos to at least see it installed in a location similar to yours.
They (like us) mention having smell issues from the toilet exhaust. But, we have since fixed these issues and I've provided detailed tips on what I have done to prep / maintain the solids chamber to combat odors in the thread of the pinned comment at the top of the comments section of this video. We are now odor free. But, of course results may vary.

I like the clean look of composting Toilet, However How will you keep the Bowl clean after use without liquid?
We spray it with vinegar which keeps it relatively clean. If it needs to be clean we just wipe it down with cleaner and a papertowel. - Liz
You open the door flap before (gosh, how do you write it so no one is offended....) so the 'solid waste' goes straight down into the tank. Also, they provide a coffee filter type product you can use if you leave the flap closed which creates a landing spot and when you are finished and open the flap door it just falls directly into the tank. And yes, vinegar and a paper towel for any clean up.

Yup! It doubles our grey water storage.

You would have to change the coco coir more often. Instead of day 3 weeks between changes it might be 2 weeks or less.

They should design it so you can use a bidet and empty that through the liquid tank. I know it’s to use less water but toilet paper is another huge issue. It’s hard to decide what to get. I want a incinerator toilet inside my tiny house but I want a composting toilet and outdoor shower outside. My issue with the incinerator toilet is the piping. It’s too bulky and requires several holes. I also researched that urine is food for the environment.
I think a composting toilet would be a great addition to a tiny home. It needs venting and a 12 volt fan so if you do have one outside consider where you'll have that hooked up to. Also toilet paper isn't an issue if you just throw it in the trash can like us. - Liz
