I might do this with the larger thread or yarn, using a balloon inside to form, then stiffen it. Get rid of the balloon and you would have a nice decoration for hanging from the ceiling or banister!
Doing it that was is a LOT of fun! I made ornaments that were "hot air balloons" with balls inside. Using the balloons, leaving a lace shell was spectacular.
