Hi Eva, I was a professional truck driver for 30 years and I would like to give you some advise when you are stuck or in danger of getting stuck, first of all if you are standing still and ready to pull away from the area you are stuck in, after you put in you differential do not put your vehicle in first gear because the torque is to high and can cause all you tires to spin and dig a hole underneath them. What you want to do is start out in second gear and let the engine torque do all the work, it won’t spin your tires and it will provide the power to get your vehicle moving. If you are moving and you feel you vehicle starting to slip or slide don’t panic, stay calm and ease up,on the gas and turn your vehicle and keep the nose of your vehicle upward in the opposite direction of the slide and once again let the engine torque do the work at a slow by steady pace. In my 30 tears of driving a truck, I have driven close to two million miles and I have been through some of the worse snow storms and bad road conditions you can imagine and just keeping my wits and thinking about my situation and how to handle it always got me home safe.

Really really really good advice Daniel. I live in the mountains at nearly 10000ft and it's soooo important to learn how to handle dealing with really poor traction. I've seen so many people get stuck, slide back down hills, and get stuck in ditches(or in deep snow). I wish advanced driving courses were the norm

@@juleshall1495 She is completely unsuited to drive an old and beat up LR that is unreliable and requires frequent repairs and she has crappy driving and off-road skills.
A Landcruiser would have been a much better vehicle without all the junk she is carrying that puts her vehicle way over payload and top heavy and prone to roll over or capsize.
She has no clue of wtf she is doing and getting by with the help of the other people who she conveniently latches on to and discards depending on how it suits her. Not even mentioning or helping the others promote their channels. Very self centered and self absorbed selfish person who has little skills and mental toughness to do it ( she freaks out at every small problem)

After driving many beaches going around Australia I can verify that constant adjustment to tyre pressure is totally necessary also a good onboard compressor that can reinflate reasonably quickly
I would highly recommend finding someone or a professional to get schooled how to use your landrover to its abilities like anything as your skill improves doing those tracks becomes fun and rewarding

Why do all that and learn actual skills when all you are out there to do is for self promotion and self aggrandizement and selling yourself as something she is not?
If she had half the brains, she would have bought a newer Landcruiser instead of an old rust bucket Defender for which she neither has mechanical skills nor driving skills.
Her wheels were slipping so bad screaming for traction and she was driving with full tire pressure on dirt. Does her vehicle have lockers?

You were absolutely right to turn around.
If we're honest, anybody who's ever wrecked a 4x4 has probably got to a point where they felt like they SHOULD go back, decided to carry on and then paid the price.
If the vehicle is a weekend toy that's not a big deal but when the vehicle is your home for the next couple of years you need to protect it.
Odyssey CAN manage tracks like that fairly easily, and there's a bunch of stuff you could have done differently, but learning is an incremental process.
Things will test your limits and, as you gain confidence, your limits will increase little by little.
Honestly, I was more concerned about driving on the beach.
You REALLY need to deflate your tyres for driving on a beach or you'll get stuck and that means you NEED a reliable compressor to re-inflate your tyres once you get off a beach again.
If you haven't already got one, buy a good quality compressor... and buy a foot-pump as a backup for when the compressor inevitably fails.

I have to be honest, i fear for her on this trip. She won't always have other around to help her. I don't see her reaching her goal. There is a technique for when one wheel lifts like that @17:58. In low range, use your left foot to brake gently. Practise on open space, you will find you can brake quite hard and Odessey will not stall. Select 1st in low, keep a constant amount of throttle and modulate your speed with your braking. Stay off the clutch - in low range using the clutch, especially slipping it, is v.bad. What this does is to lock your differential so the wheel that is on the ground will be powered. As soon as your front right lifted, power was being sent to the lifted wheel which does not help you. By braking, your even out the power distribution between left and right wheels and you will make it up on three powered wheels. Sometimes a little momentum helps, sometimes just maintaining three powered wheels will help.

I loved her, and still love her memories, of a near lifetime together. She died of cancer a year and a half ago. I have been watching your video creations for a bit more then a year. I am beginning to understand your need for adventure and somewhat envy your ability to fulfill that need. I deeply respect your judgment when you decide to turn back when the going becomes too dangerous. You got off the mountain when your body was exhausted and now you backed down that track when your truck was about to tip over. It requires a lot of courage to say - enough.
For a while I was concerned that I might hear that you rolled that top heavy truck (unsolicited advice - dump at least a third of the stuff you have packed into the beast) down some mountain. When driving through tough terrain, airing down the tires of the vehicle by about 15 psi can help them cut through any tricky terrain safely and efficiently. Wider tires give the vehicle more traction, allowing the tires to be more flexible, making it easier for you to get out of a rough patch.

    Top camera work!
FYI there is a very simple technique for preventing roll-overs in your scary situation (and it isn't a guy underneath pushing back!). It's a bit hard to explain on 'paper' but it involves attaching a winch extension strap to the chassis on the low side of your Landy, running it up the side and over the roof (underneath any tent or roof-rack), then connecting it to the winch of a second vehicle parked at a distance off to the high side, with the wheels chocked if possible. The two vehicles make a long 'T' formation. The driver of the "tilt' vehicle then slowly negotiates the obstacle as per normal while the driver of the winch vehicle maintains a slight tension in the winch cable to limit the tilt so that you can be confident of not rolling.

Just a thought - do you have a satellite phone? When you crossed the Cabeza I advised you to cary a gun if you ever made that journey again. In Mexico you must not carry a gun, but a satellite phone might be even more useful. It won't make bad people back off but it will make it possible for you to summon help no matter where you are. I'm less worried about you after wtaching this video but it pays to plan ahead for all possible outcomes. I'm impressed with your decision to leave your friends and take an alternate route. It's a smart girl who knows her own limitations and you do! Equally important, you listen to that little voice at the back of your mind when it says be cautious! If I was a betting man, I'd wager you have what it takes to journey all the way around the world, even through Africa and Asia. Be sure to keep making videos as you go. I want to watch you do it!

Really enjoying your channel. It's immensely entertaining and your production quality is spectacular.
A thought or two on the concept of "Luck."
I was in a real war once many years ago, and I learned some things there (the hard way!) about the importance of exercising prudent judgement, and how "Good Luck" and "Common Sense" are related to one another. Common Sense doesn't bestow you with Good Luck, but it for sure improves the odds.
On the other side, the lack of Common Sense (prudent judgement) works in reverse; it simply increases your odds of running out of luck.
Sooner or later, especially in dicey situations, your Luck runs out and truly bad things happen, things which you regret because they might have been prevented had you only followed your Commonsense instincts.
(When you and Vilk were on the El Camino Diablo, hours from the nearest medical or veterinary facilities, walking among the rock formations in rattlesnake country wearing open-toe sandals, I could only imagine the catastrophe of either of you being bitten and unable to make it to rescue. Your unprotected and isolated proximity to that dangerous US/Mexico border (and to the evil monsters who frequent the area) certainly set off my "Human Sex Trafficking Victim" alarms. Vilk would have been shot dead, and you would be somewhere on Earth to be never seen again)
Enough said. You're an adult and your vlog is wonderful to enjoy.
    (But please be prudent)
