I appreciated the respect Don Giller, the genius uploader, showed by not superimposing the dates over the video. Then I wondered if they were in the description and I said, nah, few people would go through trouble of listing the segment dates. And lo and behold, there is every single date in the description. The gratitude that historians need to show Don should be enormous.

One of the greatest comedies ever made. The thing is the comedy distracts from how good the actors are. I remember it first coming out - I am English - and although I always knew it was a put on, it was years later that I found out it's American - their accents are so on the money I thought they were English. Now in 2022 I have seen the film 20 times or more and I still laugh. One of the best films ever made.

Christopher Guest I think has dual citizenship, American and British, so his accent isn't without extensive influence.

Paul Shaffer is only half joking and he's completely right, too much of his great part was left on the cutting room floor. But This is Spinal Tap is probably the only movie in history that gets better the more scenes you add back in: I've watched the deleted parts so much, and some are so brilliant and iconic, I can't remember anymore if they were in the theatrical cut. It's absurd that we never got a properly remastered three hours DiBergi's Cut.

I love how in the early clips, the audience - and even Letterman - are almost laughing AT the idea of the film...not knowing they are looking at/hearing about arguably the funniest and most influential comedy of the last 35 years.

I was at the Spinal Tap show in Seattle. I thought they were hilarious. My buddy thought they were crap. He couldn’t seem to grasp the concept that they were not a real band. I tried to point out to him that it was Lenny, of Lenny and Squiggy fame, but he just didn’t recognize him, and thought they were real.

  • @BlueMHart

When watched together, Michael McKean's interviews tell an amusingly tragic story where first he's excited about his new projects coming up, then he reveals that they flopped, then he's salty that he didn't make much money on the Spinal Tap tour to make up for it, lol. I admire his candidness throughout.
It seemed like Harry Shearer's short film got next to no reaction from the audience... for which I don't blame them... that was probably too niche for the general public.
Thanks for including the Spinal Tap performance- the interview has been uploaded elsewhere, but I couldn't find the performance.

The reason I went to see Spinal Tap was Letterman constantly airing hilarious clips and saying that it was the funnest movie he had seen in years. I'm glad I didn't see Rob Reiner on Letterman since he gave away about a dozen great jokes from the movie.

@@phililpb Yeah, I am an idiot. I read it backwards. Doooooohhhh. I retardedly read that you were saying, why did they use British accents. Adjusting my meds.
My thinking was that while in [British] character they were hilarious. As soon as they went out of character (the middle hour) they were awful. Really a letdown for me, since I had them so high on a comedy pedestal, and I expected them to slay. I guess that when your résumé centers on SNL that it's 90% likely that humor is not your strong suit, haha.
But then when they resurrected Tap, in my mind they returned to be slaying comedy superheros. And with G.D. outstandingly convincing British accents.
Please forgive my temporary mental retardation.
