    Thank you for the wonderful explanation. This article was published in HBR in 1960 and influenced a lot of management leaders. Just wanted to understand if Railway companies should also start Airlines and other modes of Transportation? If so, why aren't they doing it today?

      Not every market is worth entering into. For eg. Aviation market is highly competitive with high initial investment & thin profit margins. A railway company can provide food services & travel packages with hotel bookings. Business grows in the direction of customer's needs.
      Customers travel by cars & buses, businesses deliver packages using trucks. There are some problems to be solved/improved upon. Pick some problems others might be interested to pay you for and you have their business.

    I think not just marketing but also relationship myopia is what most humans suffer from.
    They take many relationships for granted whether professional or personal
