    I love you two on this channel! The Everlast vs. Eminem beef was the first story I ever reported on for MTV News. I’m a huge fan of both artists. The timeline: Dilated Peoples “Eardrums Pop” remix (Everlast verse only) > “I Remember” (Eminem) > “Whitey’s Revenge” (Everlast) > “Quitter” (Eminem) > “Searching for Bobby Fischer” (Evidence).
    While it’s easy to view this battle through a modern lens - and with Eminem’s iconic track record - it’s important to remember this was the year 2000. Everlast was among the first white rappers to have credibility in hip-hop. He was part of Ice-T’s Rhyme Syndicate while he was still in high school and released his debut solo album in 1990. DJ Lethal was his DJ. After a falling out with Warner Bros., Everlast, Lethal, and Danny Boy O’Connor formed House Of Pain. The first album went platinum; the 1994 followup went gold. HOP split up in 1996. Everlast's Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, mixing hip-hop and rock, dropped in 1999. It went double platinum. His 1999 song with Carlos Santana won a Grammy. Everlast is only three years older than Eminem, but had done all of this by the year 2000. Em’s disses were reserved mostly for pop stars in 1999/2000, so Everlast coming for him was a big deal.
    Eminem dissed corny white rappers like Vanilla Ice but gave shoutouts to Serch and Everlast on The Slim Shady LP. But when Everlast ran into Eminem at a show somewhere, he felt like Eminem big timed him. So he decided to layer in a subliminal diss on the Dilated remix. (It’s hard to believe in 2021, but the "Halley's Comet" double-entendre wasn’t intentional.) This song was recorded before The Marshall Mathers LP was even out.
    Eminem answered back with "I Remember," which sparked Everlast's "Whitey's Revenge." Em was looking at possible prison time after he saw Kim kissing someone at a nightclub and slapped the guy with an unloaded pistol. (Everlast, for what it’s worth, had a weapons charge in the 90s.) This time, Everlast brought up Em's daughter on purpose, after learning he'd touched a nerve. "Quitter" came back even harder, with Em inviting D-12 in homage to the way Tupac added Outlawz to "Hit 'Em Up.” Lethal, now in Limp Bizkit, was asked on MTV's TRL who he thought would win in a fistfight. Limp was cool with Eminem, but Lethal toured as Everlast's DJ before he'd even finished high school. He said Everlast, which is what caused Eminem to fire at Limp Bizkit with D-12's "Girls." (Evidence, feeling Dilated was unfairly caught in the crossfire, answered Em with “Searching for Bobby Fischer.”)
    Everlast, for his part, acknowledges Eminem’s accomplishments and said in an interview with Talib Kweli that mentioning Eminem’s daughter was over the line. Eminem dismisses almost all of his lyrical adversaries, but he's said Everlast’s line about “you won’t be slapping me with no empty gun” was good.

  • @jmcclurg11
    @jmcclurg11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    little history: the heart attack reference is because at the time everlast had a heart attack. WHen he says do it for Ice t , its because Ice T was the first to sign everlast to Rhyme syndicate back in the late 80's/early 90's. He had a trash album come out. During this time these disses dropped on lime wire and napster. he had the 2 songs against benzino and then ja rule. Such a great era

      Same with Benzino. The first few tracks were on the fun or lazy end of the scale. But Em became more focused on destroying everything around Benzino, once he threatened to kill Hailie. He said something along the lines of Hailie was going to need to watch her back because he (Benzino) was going to turn her into the next JonBenet Ramsey (a little girl that ended up being found murdered and shoved under their basement stairs. The case was still unsolved when the song was released.)

    The beef between Eminem and Everlast started for the most petty of reasons. Everlast wasn’t pleased when Eminem ignored him backstage at a concert back in 1999, so he went and dropped a few bars on Em and his daughter Hailie on the remix to “Ear Drums Pop” by Dilated Peoples. Em caught wind of the song and unleashed an onslaught of disses aimed at the former House of Pain frontman. One diss in particular (“I Remember”) features Em ridiculing Everlast’s heart troubles and his age.
    Everlast replied with “Whitey’s Revenge” where he pulled no punches. He mentioned looking after Kim and Hailie once Em was sent to prison due to the assault charges he was facing at the time and even questioned Em’s sexuality. Eminem would respond one last time on “Quitter” where Em ridiculed Everlast’s career and transition into “country western rap.” The scathing diss ended the feud as Everlast never recovered from the Em’s lyrical firestorm.

    Everlast buried himself when he said Hailie needs a DNA test. Another career destroyed. Everlast was the face of House of Pain and had a heart attack. One of the best Em’s diss.

    No disrespect to anyone, Eminem is one of the top Emcees/lyricists of his era, but look at the era he was in, who was/is his competition? In the golden era of hip/hop from about the mid-1980s to about 1995/96 he would have just been another good emcee in the game. When Isaac Newton discovered gravity and they called him the greatest physicist of all time, his reply was simply, “I am only this great because I studied those who came before me and stood on the shoulders of these giants”. And that is the main reason I have a lot of respect for Eminem, when he talks, you see he is a student of the game, this dude talks about the “Treacherous Three”, he praised dudes like KoolG-Rap, PushaT. When we listen to Eminem, subconsciously he brings us old heads back to that grimy golden hip/hop of lyrical era.

      DMX, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Wu-Tang altogether, Jay-Z, Andre 3000, Nas, I mean I can keep going

    • @seeker401seek2
      @seeker401seek2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zackfielder I said the golden era of Hip/Hop Emimem firs album was in 1996, which basically flopped, think it was called finite or infinite or something like that. and from that group of emcees, you an keep going , but they are all post golden era except one, JayZ, 1988 (32 years ago) and there is no comparison as far as growth is concerned, until Emimem can drop a 4:44 or gamefully, affect business, culture, marry into power and have so much power as to walk with Presidents, there is just no comparison.

    • @seeker401seek2
      @seeker401seek2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like i have stated, i have the utmost respect for Emimem, but when people tell me he is the greatest ever, sorry just does not sit well with me! I hear him rap and i hear Grandmaster Caz, Kool moe dee, Slick Rick,The god Rakim, KoolG- Rap, ..ect. I hear all these influences. and he is an excellent student of the game. Remember at the 2003 Grammy who Emimem said was his biggest influnces? KoolG-Rap, the story telling and technicality. And if you speak to these pioneers, they also have mad respect for Eminem, because of how he learned and pushed the genre to another level .

    • @seeker401seek2
      @seeker401seek2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zackfielder for instance in D12- QUITTER FT. EMINEM, i here two reference tracks, Slick Rick La di da di, and of course Hit 'Em Up. Who did people like Slick Rick, and PAC Reference? or did they pioneer? Even listen to Ice Cube's "No Vaseline", considered the greatest diss track of all time, it stands on its own with no references. PushaT did what Eminem did with Drake diss, he referenced Jay's The story of OJ, put you in that mind set and they lace the lyrics

    • @zackfielder
      @zackfielder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      seeker401 Seek hey I don’t disagree with anything you said there, and honestly I doubt Em would either. I was mainly focused on the question of his competition, all who are/were excellent students of the game.

    Whiteys Revenge - Everlast
    Quitter - Eminem
    The order of the tracks, Everlast had a line he said about em that sparked "I Remember" track. The first track em was just really playing around but then went in on him after everlast responded to it with lines about his daughter.
