Looks great; that routing made just the perfect very subtle decorative touch. They look more custom and better than the ubiquitous 6-panel doors from the big box.
You did a good job. Did the primer hide the wood grain pattern? Im fixing to paint a plain door and hoping the primer will cover the wood grain pattern. Thanks.
Overall, the sanding / primer / top coat combo hid the wood grain well. If the light catches in a certain way and you look closely, you can still see some grain, but it does look pretty clean unless you're paying close attention. If I could go back and do it again, I don't think I would change anything about that piece of the project - turned out pretty well. Thanks for watching!

I really appreciate how detailed your instructions are. I think I’m gonna give this a try on our hollow core doors. The grooves are just enough of a touch to make the doors look better without having to add a bunch of trim to imitate 6 panel doors. Thank you for sharing!
i have never seen "this " technique before.. looks like its super clean can cool.. but.. with your lighting...its very hard to "see" just how good they look i think.. can you maybe post some pics or maybe add a vid that shows off your hard work a bit more? in some parts of your vid for a very Brief sec you get to see them.. but its not enough! I could not see the grooves in the door. I guess because of the light angle. But i still liked the doors. Thank you for showing the “mistakes”. It helps me know what “could” happen.

I was originally thinking of material to the door surface (with super thin plywood) to achieve the same 5-panel look - in general, I think the 5-panel design looks more classy/modern/expensive than the flat surface. I realized that adding material on top of the existing surface would be more difficult - would have needed to mess with the door frame / jamb / hinges to make them close properly. So ultimately went with material with the router instead. Thanks for watching!
It does look better. It just seems to me that although you created some texture with the router, it could use something else. Can’t put my finger in it. Maybe some glaze? But man, what a difference and the cost savings is incredible.
@@BelowAverageDIY yeah! probably a glaze to define your routed cuts. But dude, it looks great. You did such a good job. What I like about glazes is you can wipe on and wipe off depending on the depth you’re looking for. And the routed cuts would absorb the glaze more, but I suppose you would discolor the white. I know they have wax “clear” option too, if you don’t want to discolor the white, and then use a antiquing medium “ silver, bronze, black, whatever “ just for the routed cuts. In fact the wax would give your pieces a nice luster. I’m no expert, but have done many projects using glazes, waxes and other techniques. Always have a dummy piece to play on.
I was strongly considering that too. I ended up adding a foam door sweep to the bottom of a few of the bedrooms to close the gap just for sound reduction's sake, which has been a decent solution so far. I considered adding on some wood to the bottom of the doors but figured it'd be pretty tough to blend in to make it look natural. Have you ever tried that successfully? Thanks for watching.
No, but I recently found a video where someone was doing this. As long as you paint the doors in opaque color it shouldn't be a problem. Glue on a piece of wood sand it flush, fill gaps with some filler, sand again and paint the door.
Since you hate painting, you might want to invest in a paint sprayer. Save your time and you get a nice even spray (if you do it, right) and a smooth finish.
I have a Wagner Flexio. I don’t know if they still sell that model or not because I’ve had in a long time. I do know Wagner seems to be the number one spray painters, but most DIYers use on the TH-cam channels. The one I have has the paint and the hand sprayer. But there is one bigger but you can put the tube into the can of paint, so you don’t have the weight of the paint in your hand. Which I’m considering getting since I’m getting ready to paint the whole house inside and I’m in my 70s. Doing one room is one thing but a whole house is another thing. Hope this helps.

I think the doors look great, especially when you consider how much money he saved and not buy new doors. I bought a house and it has the hollow wooden doors and this is exactly how I plan to do mine. They don’t look as modern as a brand new door, but they cost a few hundred instead of a few thousand also and they don’t look cheap by any means. I think he did a great job and maybe he’s likeme, brand new doors are not his priority.

One thing to remember is when you sand sand with the grain and always end your sanding with a fine grit.

Can you still see the wood grains?
Very faintly. I didn't use any grain filler, just sanded down the surface. The 2nd coat of paint masked the wood grain pretty well for me.
