I agree that the edge goes to the EMGs for bridge pickup into the Big Muff, but I prefer the single coils for all the other tones. Would be interesting to hear the Seymour Duncan SSL-5 bridge vs the EMG bridge. Great video, and thanks for all your work!
This video answers one of the questions of our time. Jokes aside, it’s a pure delight to see a niche question treated with such depth and comprehensiveness and I love to listen to both very closely to hear the most minute differences between the two. Also, killer playing as as always. ❤
I've been a guitar player for 30+ years and this video just seems to reinforce my view that, apart from some exceptionally subtle differences, most of the time comes from the fingers and the way you attack and bend the strings. Great playing!
As a long time player of the EMGs, they are a unique beast, but no other pickup will get you closer to that 84-96 Gilmour sound. Is that palpable controlled sustain, that bell like attack, the slightly more rounded edge that sets them apart. But not quite that thickness of a HB sound. You'll get a cry, but not a screech from them. You will not get raw and unprocessed, so don't be looking for it.
Onca video çekeni gördüm farklı farklı tarzlar yöntemler ile çalan içerik üretenleri türk olsun yabancı olsun senin sayende davild gilmour gibi çalmayı hissetmeyi öğrendim teşekkürler Mustafa abi
Im glad you tested these against Texas Specials because that's what I've in my strat for years and I've always found them too harsh and this for recording directly into my interface. I've always strives for Gilmours tone so this video has my sold on the DG20's. Im gonna order them today.
too be fair, I think I prefer the pickups to sound a bit more "dull" (darkish or just neutral) and just add colouration to the sound with the fx, amp and speakers (inc. speaker sims and IR's). but also, in a pickup comparison the guitar player needs to be very very consistent, and most of the "pickups shootouts" we (guitar players and the persons that are making the videos) forget a lot about it, and putting the "tone wood" aside (and string deg.), you did an amazing job. you showed us that difference between both and its audible, and in the context of a mix its important to have a gtr that doesn't interfere in it, and that is also able to stand on its own when is time to shine, so I would go with the EMG's cause they fit more in my playing style and setup.
Texas Special has more open soung, guitar sings in the last half of video. Let's say like analogue live band versus high definition MP3. EMG sounds more digital, supressed.
I love these pickups. They are the most silent set, maybe along with the Fishman's. They are dead quiet. They are a little darker, but the bridge is also really usable unlike some Fender sets. The main reason to switch to them though is they are dead quiet. The EXG and SPC introduce some noise into the circuit. Still if you love Pulse, this is it.
There is one thing you can not buy, this is the touch and talent of David Gilmour. You have got this gift playing with a splendid touch like DG . I must admit i prefer the texas special, more natural. But anyway, i have the same pleasure when you play guitar as i can feel listening to David !
What an awesome comparison!!! Watching this video made me stop lusting after a guitar with texas specials. Not that they sound bad, but my personal style is much more suited to the emgs i think.
hmm... i will say that for the most part, the texas specials win. just because they have a mojo to them that can not be replaced by emgs. but when it comes to emg, they are good for certain things. one of my favorite versions of shine on you crazy diamond is the royal alburt hall 2006 version which uses emgs. i like emgs and should definetly get a set for my first guitar (along with a neck that has locking tuners), my second guitar has an ssl-5 and i will say, when it comes down to the ssl-5 vs the emg 20... it really is you like one or the other. that being said, i should still buy a set. btw i finally completed my pedalboard! i can now have the pleasures of stomping on a gilmourish effect everytime i want to play guitar!
For the most part, the differences are rather minor. I suspect that more difference is in how they feel under your fingers, and the EMG's should be far more resistant to hum and maybe have some more sustain. However, a tweak or two on two or three knobs on amp and pedals should all but erase any differences. Nearly everyone in any live audience would be unable to hear any difference in tone. Despite all that, I agree that if I were to be stuck with one Strat and one Strat only, I would want one with the EMG DG-20 set in it. I reckon they would be more versatile and useful in a greater range of circumstances. Also, yes, EMG's can do single-coil sounds, but they are _EMG_ single-coil sounds. Listen to the intro movement from Great White's _Rock Me,_ that's an EMG single-coil sound. I sorta wonder sometimes how Lace Sensor Strat pickups might sound in this David Gilmour/Pink Floyd context...
I think they have a very specific sound to it. They sound much more unique than any pickup I've heard. Basically when you play them for the first time you instantly recognize the Pulse sound, it feels like "OH! so that was it."
So many different variables, but in most cases the single coils sounded better in isolation, but the EMGs sounded better when the backing track was mixed in.
Everyone here probably knows this but using the 24 Volt Mod with EMGs really helps. The EXG midrange control really helps but accessories can only handle 18 volts. An 81 in the bridge used with the EXG sounds really heavy. In my experience with the EMG SA/S/81 with EXG control in 18 volts tuned DGCFAD the SA and S sound more like mini humbuckers than true single coils. Perhaps the SV/SAV are better since they are voiced for a more vintage tone. I will have to try them. But, I tend to not even like hum canceling passive designs because I think they alter the tone. I think Lace Sensor Golds are probably the best sounding vintage voice hum canceling single coil.
I have had these in my main strat for years and what i can say is they are great for jazz and other styles also. Kind of like an eq pedal built in.if i were a studio musician it would be a must i still love single coils also but they just feel a little anemic after playing these for so long.
Are you using the EMG 24V MOD? If not you might want to consider it for cleaning up articulation and extending the high end with clarity in a higher headroom. Or at least adding another 9V battery because it only takes 9V each to drive EMG's built in Preamp pickup circuit in each pickup 🤓
I have emg dg 20 on my red strat, past fx pedal, bk buthler , dg2 toptone sound very nice with Emg! But Fuzz face vintage sound very bad with active pickups or put a good buffer
I have the feeling that EMGs had a more balanced sound, the texas specials have a little bit of an extra treble to it that dont go too well for some sounds, but i think that this varies very much on taste, DG20s sound really Gilmour-ish tho
I have an 80s Hohner strat with really low output pickups, they measure something like 5,5kΩ. I lowered them almost all the way on the bass side and when I use large amounts of compression and some overdrive they get really close to the EMG sound in some regards. I've been looking to get my hands on a vintage squier strat and some SA's but imo they (and all guitar pickups in general) are very overpriced.
Could you give me the exact brand of the microphones used in David Gilmour black strat? I would like to order them to install them. I want the same as him… thank you bro… Besides, do you advise me to exchange my microphones in my Mexican Stratocaster for the microphones in the Black strat?
I have a issue with my fat 50s neck pickup in my black strat. Its very muddy and bassy i nearly never use it...and when i am listening to your covers when you use your neck pickup its nice and crispy...do you know what that can be thanks a lot
that is a question with many possible answers. First, I have texas specials on my blue one. But I know what you're talking about. Here are some of the reasons for your problem - Picking style (this is more important than you think) - too much gain - wrong pedal with a wrong amp - pickup height - having no buffer - having way too much bass and treble but not enough mid range - having a broken, problematic pedal (this is more common than you think) - bad cables - bad power supply I don't think the problem is related to the things after the 3rd article though.
Fat 50s is arguably the greatest pickups. If your neck pickup is too muddy, depending on what kind of treble bleed capacitor you have installed inside your guitar, you can lower the volume a little bit on your guitar and get a thin clear sound
When Prince play jazz 2009 lotus flower album in montreux or nokia theater in LA i prefer emg SA sounds but in your video i prefer your vintage pickup sound wtf in nokia theater he has a killer disto and sound (during a live session he didn't play much on the guitar during this live) with emg SA best guitar sound i haver heard in my life of music enjoyer. I think it was spc and exg off these pickups need a lot of parameters to have that pro tubesque and fat killer sound i love. Prince has a ton of nice guitar tech who works with him he has a japanese guitare tech and japanese are know to be genious in musical electronic so it needs nice ajustements. Majority of famous guitarists have bad guitar tech and crappy sound in live and sounds better in album for Prince it's quite the opposite his pickups sounds even better live with perfect settings and virtuoso fingers, the boss of musicians
The actives are soo much more balanced for not needing half the compressor eq limiter noise gste bs! For live or studio to my ears and would take pressing with efects way better and ther 2x less buzz hum to me
Its a tough choice honestly. I think one thing thats leads me to want the emgs is simply that they were worked on by DG and they are probably great sounding at loud volume, really sing, and with the mid boost probably very versitile. High on my list forsure. Sounds very smooth but still holds the high end of a strat tone
My strat has lace sensor hot gold pickups installed and the Eric Clapton tone boost installed as well. I've never played EMG'S so I was wondering if my setup would be somewhat similar to the DG20's? Or are they just not comparable?
I need to stop watching your videos...because every time I do, I need to buy something. Newest purchase is the Past FX power booster....and because of you, perhaps now the TD-Y. So uncool.

The DG-20s sound a LOT like the older Eric Clapton Signature Strats with the Gold Lace Sensors. The EC may have a little more mid boost.
I have a set of dg20 EMG and they are amazing !
My other gas fat 50 cs pickups and they compliment each other so well
Lol, the string snapping is relatable. 😂

I agree Robert👍🏻
Massive Hendrix and Jeff Beck fan here: I liked the EMGs better. I think they sound MORE Stratty than the vintage Texas ones. Cheers!
EMG DG20 WINS 😎
The vintage vibe of the stock pickups are the ones for me
Killing it man
The EMG's just has more of everything. They do everything the other pick, ups did but with more warmth and presence.

The actives just a cleaner signal no sandpaper sound or buzz like the passive ones
PERFECT VIDEO!
I know! Thanks!
I have the feeling that EMGs had a more balanced sound, the texas specials have a little bit of an extra treble to it that dont go too well for some sounds, but i think that this varies very much on taste, DG20s sound really Gilmour-ish tho

Are both your necks the classic 50' vintage soft V shape with the lacquered finish 21 fret? made in Mexico?
Red one is 7.25 soft C, it’s a bit thick neck. Japan made. Blue is 7.25 soft V and very vintage style slim neck.

Hi Mustafa. I used the 4th Gen noiseless pickups. How is it when compared with EMG PU's?
Never tried 4th Gen noiseless pickups
The Texas Specials are more clangy and toppy. EMGs more balanced. EMGs for me.
I’m surprised the fuzz phrase sounded decent with active pickups. I’ve heard fuzz faces don’t get along with active pickups.
Sounded like a good distortion, but not like a fuzz. Too low "dirt" on the attack
@@theflyerita8794 I agree, but I’m also not exactly a fan of the fuzz face. I’d take a muff or rat any day of the week.
