:/ you trying to be sarcastic? I mean, I can't imagine being the person who constantly talks about being bullied up till beyond idek what age. I'm trying to be nice here. But like? You let ppl control you like that? Bc I consider my own blood line to be the worst. Everyone else? Well, you came, you saw, you can go about your merry way now. Bc I don't even think about that sh. If I do, it's rare. But I'll question you more for it before I ever allow it to get under my skin. & Yeah, every.single.time. there's always some issue going on w/ the "bully." Like, lol. I'm supposed to be insulted by that? YeahNO!Really, I just truly hate anyone who's ever wronged me about anyone or anything permanent (or could've been) in my life. Well, I hate ppl who belittle trauma too tho. Go back to your safe bubble. No one even asked. But yeah, so in my world's things arent so wrapped around petty. With that said, imagine having your head constantly obsessed about looks. Not just everyone else's, but you're own too tho. & I'm not even that person. I'm not some goddess, I don't think my sh don't stank. But I don't feel so low about myself, the only way I can feel good about myself is to tear other ppl down, compare myself, wever. But yet, i somehow still cross ppls minds more. Glad to know that I was what you used to define your worth? I mean, I could brag about sh. But you know? Ppl either get grossed out by it, or get jello. I know I get grossed out by conceited ppl. Some of em don't even have it like that. So there's that, irony. I remember once, I really don't even remember the situation. But I know I was kinda dumbfounded by it, & I didn't even say sh in response. & This guy watching me, out of no where, like how they sometimes tend to do, giggled & said, " it must be painful being beautiful." I smirked at how cheesey that seemed for maybe less than a sec, but switched back to irritated in no time. I said something like," shutup. It is tho. Ppl always be hatin', & for no damn reason!" Also, I'll have you know, that I remember this enough to know that this song is at least 15+ yrs old. So yeah, I'm still here.. . In reality, I don't even think about my looks that much till other ppl mention it.
It's not intended as a fashion parade but a homage to female icons in the music world in chronological order, it is: 1.Josephine Baker - 20's, Flapper Era 2.Dorothy Dandridge - 30's 3.Andrew Sisters[Sister Sledge, I think] - 40's 4.Diana Ross - 50's 5.Donna Summers - 90's [I'm not sure which video] 6.Janet Jackson [From the video "Rhythmn Nation"] -80's 7.TLC (T-Boz) [From the video "Creep"] -90's 8.Herself - 00's
The last change is my favourite, where she's just herself, singing and dancing. She shows that you don't have to be a super famous icon, dress in expensive clothing, have flashy dancing, or dramatic makeup. You can just be yourself and still be beautiful.
Keri Hilson really nailed the looks in the video and I can name them off: 1.) Josephine Baker (1920's.) 2.) Dorothy Dandridge (1930's.) 3.) Doris Day (1940's.) 4.) Diana Ross (1960's.) 5.) Donna Summer (1970's.) 6.) Janet Jackson (1980's.) 7.) Tionne Watkins aka T-Boz from TLC (1990's.)
I miss this amount of effort put into music videos fr. Beautiful, goofy, carefree, iconic, and respectfully paid homage to the musicians that came before her
This song never fails to fill me with nostalgia. It always makes me think of my preteen years in Jr. High, playing with my blue Nintendo DSI and watching iCarly, Big Time Rush and Victorious on Nickelodeon 24/7. All my older GenZ babies check in👇🏽🩷🩷 #1998
This song is underrated as hell and I feel sorry for the people that missed the message entirely with this song. Big ups to Keri Hilson, I know being an artist was not really her thing as she is more so a behind the scenes songwriter but I commend her for stepping out into the limelight for a bit to put out her own message in her music. Pretty Girl Rock will forever be a classic because it teaches girls and women to feel comfortable in their own skin and not to allow others to put them down no matter what stage they are in their life. ❤❤❤👍🏽
@@yllanafederico2203 Keri released her 3rd album in March of 2016, it was titled L.I.A.R. which is acronym for Love Is A Religion. Since then however she has most been doing features with other artist or songwriting for other artist.
Your right it is a really good song. Teaches girls, young women and women to love who they are that's good no matter what anyone else feels about them.
I can’t stop listening to this song this song this make me stop crying cause people at my school was talking about how black I’m am and my mom told me to listen to this
You ARE beautiful, own it sister. I was there until I discovered my own beauty, took a very long time but know only YOU define who you are. All I see is beauty, walk in it Queen (believe it for yourself) xoxoxo
You are perfectly made, love❤ What they say about you, has nothing to do with you! It just shows their insecurities, and how horrible they are. Keep your head up so your crown don't fall. "If you ain't got no haters you ain't poppin" - I forgot who this was by, but this is really true. You are beautiful, wonderful, intelligent, and amazing!!!
I'm back in 2024. This is still a visual masterpiece!!! Taking us through the different decades of music and television, from silent films of the 1930s to the funky 70s, the dance revolution of the (golden era) 80s to "TLC" in the 90s (the point where tears inevitably fill my eyes as nostalgia overwhelms me). Beautiful!!!
Keri nailed every single look in this music video and I can name off every single decade as well as every person whom she was paying homage to: 1.) Josephine Baker (1920s.) 2.) Dorothy Dandridge (1930s.) 3.) Lena Horne (1940s.) 4.) Diana Ross (1960s.) 5.) Donna Summer (1970s.) 6.) Janet Jackson (1980s.) 7.) Tionne Watkins AKA T-Boz from TLC (1990s.)
I remember getting bullied over my dark skin complexion then turning on the T.V. and hearing this song come on. I thought it was a sign from God saying I'm beautiful, but anyway ever since then when I see this song in my recommendations I always listen to it remembering how beautiful I am despite people's opinions on my skin tone.
I just dont understand an African American being bullied in U.S.. isn't U.S. a United States of complexion? Aren't people there exposed to all complexion. Is so sad to hear this though.
Roxyl LC Fox As an American I can tell you first hand, although there are many shades of complexions, darker skin tones are not the beauty standard here in the US. Many of our African American celebrities that are considered beautiful have lighter complexions such as Rihanna and Beyoncé. So diversity in complexions doesn’t equal acceptance of all skin tones unfortunately. I’ve never been bullied about my complexion, but people have kinda insinuated I can’t be %100 black, of West African descent because of how I look, and asking if I’m mixed, which I feel is not even remotely a compliment to insinuate that I’m beautiful because I have to have some type of mix, or one of my parents is mixed. It’s like saying “you’re pretty for a black girl”, completely backhand compliment and offensive. Because of how the American beauty standards are, many women of darker complexions and black women are going against what society says is beautiful and have started accepting our complexions. This may not be related, but we are also accepting our hair textures, hence the “natural hair movement”, which is a continuation of us also accepting that our hair texture is beautiful as well.
I didn't realize this was a Beyonce diss song until I saw an interview about 25 minutes ago 🤣🤣🤣 I had to listen to it to get the full context. Beyonce team is wrong for black balling so many black women
@shopping_with_lolas It's a long story, but basically Beyonce had a beef with Keri. People forget Keri wrote for everyone since 1999 even Beyonce talked nasty to her. Also Neyo had a beef with Beyonce and Jay Z. So they wrote multiple songs together dissing Beyonce, because behind the scenes Beyonce and Jay Z were sabotaging her. They both got Keri blackballed. At one point Keri tried to extend an olive branch before this song hit, but Neyo and the record label forced her to put this out. If you think about it Keri had been writing hits for about 10 years before her first album came out which is extremely odd. She released an album in in 2009 that sold well, then in 2010 that sold well, then never released another album after that never released an album again 🤔. Jay Z still throws shots at Neyo just a few months ago he tried to elude to Ney begging for Beyonce tickets

Keri is sooo underrated, she’s one of those artists that was meant for stardom. She’s just naturally talented. I believe this song was the kickoff for the Black Girls Rock movement 💕No matter how many showbiz people try to keep her back. She’s A Star ⭐️
This song literally was the reason I didn’t commit suicide in 4th grade. Also, thank you all who have left sweet and positive messages. To the ignorant few who believe my decision to live or die was based on this song particularly or societal views of beauty... just keep your comments to yourself. You can never fathom what anyone is going through just because your perfect bubble of life has not been disturbed. Anyways keep spreading positivity and love y’all💙. And r.i.p. to those who weren’t so lucky to have found their peace 🙏🏽. And because folks are blind enough to believe I felt this way because of my “beauty” you’re wrong, being raped, molested, dealing with domestic abuse, and verbal abuse as a child is a lot to handle and i was just in elementary school... didn’t really feel like the negative comments deserved a response but I’m sick of people assuming because you’re young you don’t go through anything. You never know what a person has experienced so, instead of questioning why they want to kill themselves just be glad they didn’t geesh !
Girls I’m here to remind y’all that now matter what you look like, makeup or no makeup, skinny or not skinny, white yellow or black , no matter what shape or size you are all beautiful ❤️ Love yourself no matter what!! Self love is the best love
Looking back a decade later, this was actually a really great and well-designed music video, and a wonderful homage to Black Women's impact in popular culture.
Yes it is! Because so many women of all nations hate on us for being naturally beautiful. Yet they copy& compare themselves to us in everyway, but say were unattractive.. sorry if I hurt your feelings just stating the Facts.
I just love how some people say this is a conceited song. Did anyone not hear the end when she was saying YOUR beautiful??? This is a song to let females know they are beautiful and should act like they know. Walk with your head up, a pep in your step with a smile on your face everywhere you go and your beauty will shine through to others. Show confidence and love yourselves while showing support to other females, ladies. Build each other up instead of tearing each other down. And that dear friends, is the pretty girl rock :)
Yea well sadly thats not how girls think or act. and before you or anyone else start rippin' into my hide for this I am a girl as well with 23 years of experience of havin' girls takin' turns rippin into me I can very well say this. As sad as it is girls/women/females/ladies just see each other as competition for their men or place which ever it may be. We're very vicious, conceited, backstabbing creatures and we make t-rex's look like puppies. I do agree with what your sayin but reality comes in with a mean right hook and a upper cut in this. I mean guys try an figure us out an lets face it women understand women and we can't stand each other.
lydia daniels I know females are like that, but why not break that cycle instead of feeding into it??? It seems dumb to me to just go around hatin on other women, when what I got is just as special, and instead of being envious, why not just work with what I've got? I agree that women are competitive with each other, especially for the attention of men, but it doesn't have to be that way. By just giving up on the issue, you're also giving in. I want to encourage women, and lift them up. Every other female should start doing the same, because it honestly doesn't have to be the way it is now. Like Tatyana said, only insecure women do that, and women need to work on their insecurities, and love them for them, instead of being jealous of other women. Society teaches us that hatred/envy/competitiveness is the way of the female, but we must break this cycle, so that the next generation of girls will know better.
Constance Collins Not trying to put down this idea or anything like that just so everyone knows this. it COULD change but it probably wont. Can't change something thats primal like that. and i believe most movie writers would be out of the job if it did xD cuz u know most the movies the pump out are just what i've said xD
lydia daniels ok girrrrl, youve got some pretty bad views! i completely get your point in that girls are naturally catty towards one another (although its heavily worsened by society) but that doesnt mean ALL girls are exactly the same. Also girls are ALLOWED to have some negative traits, were human, so dont be so cynical! i know you got that end part of your comment from the 'dont try to understand women, women understand women and they hate each other' meme and i just wanted to call you out on that coz its a pretty damaging mentality. the fact that men dont understand women isnt womens faults, its mens and women dont hate each other coz they understand each other, they each other because of competition. And even if, that doesnt mean women deserve to be hated, were human too just like men and they rarely get called out for the dumb shit they do! anyway sorry for the rant, peace!
@@eatcereal1294 milkshake and my neck my back are just as bad. Not hating but just saying that this song is much more empowering than wap. Keri can be beautiful without exploiting her genitalia.
@@_sp00kyb0i_ If they want to exploit themselves let them. Milkshake, My Neck My Back and Wap are women being empowering by doing what usually men do. Exploit. They are showing that women can be sexy too. What’s not empowering is you bringing them down just because they talk about their own body. Gtfoh and stop hating on them because they’re pretty.
@@eatcereal1294 I'm not hating on anyone or bringing anyone down. Not saying they can't exploit themselves. Just because men do it too doesn't make it right either. All I'm saying is that Keri, in my own opinion, is much more empowering to women than cardi b. There's no need to be rude and tell me to gtfo
This is the line up: Josephine Baker- 20s Lena Horne- 30s Patty Andrew (Andrew sisters)-40s Diana Ross (Supremes)-60s Donna Summer-70s Janet Jackson-80s Tboz (TLC)-90s
I heard this for the first time today on my mom's FM radio in her living room. I thought it was a brand new song and had no idea who was singing. I had to Google it and was surprised that it was by Keri Hilson and that it's from 2010 and shocked that I had never heard this beautiful song before... I don't how I missed it when it first came out over decade ago.
I cannot understand how people don't get that the point of this song is just to tell girls to be confident in yourself and know that you're beautiful no matter how you look or dress like. She's saying that this is how girls should feel about themselves, instead of constantly nitpicking what we don't like about ourselves. She said so herself, "I'm giving you an example of how I think every woman should feel about herself. No matter what anyone tells you - you're too tall, you're too short, you're too big, you're too skinny ... there's so many 'rules' to society's view of beauty. I wanted to dispel that and get rid of that. We're all beautiful in our own unique ways, you just have to find that happy place within yourself. And that's what the record's all about." Such a simple concept yet everyone wants to interpret it into something bad.
mumungo there's been soooo many arguments about the concept of the song and finally you get it. Its about all girls in general, its not triggered to one race.
@@indianajosephine4881 No problem my friend. You deserve a straight answer. While this song makes the ladies confident, the men can apply the same message by pretending she is telling the guys to do the pretty boy swag. Overall, the ladies and gentlemen can help each other to be confident when communicating, which can be useful for building up one another. I hope that makes sense. God Bless.
+Rell Brooks Everyone says her and Beyonce had beef and Beyonce (i think) released a diss track towards Kerri which apparently ruined her career. But i agree she does make cute songs, she's pretty, talented and wonderful. But sadly Beyonce ruined everything :/.
Alex Alex Nope, and thank god im not. Like i said i have no chill. If someone wants to be rude by first impression or for no valid reason at all ill be sure to shut it down as soon as possible. It's the internet after all, say something stupid or something rude for no reason at all and be sure you'll get a good smack down and get roasted.
+Brayden Dawe I don't get it so Beyoncé ruined Keri's career can you provide me a link? (No insults all the best the real!) {marks question of the day[what is Keri + Beyoncé] find the question out!} Please respond all the best........... The Real Mark!
Michael Lovely When I said I love the video & that I view her tribute to TLC as everything, I meant that I view it as _special._ Not superior, but _special._ Idk how I didn’t manage to convey that before but to anyone who was _confused,_ I’m making that clear now. Have a good one.
Every girl who grew up listening to this, is definitely a pretty girl now ♥️ this feels so crazy to listen to know and confidently sing the lyrics. I think that’s what Keri wanted young girls to feel like when listening to this obvi.
Keri clearly broke the scale with 11, her natural smile alone adds so much beauty to her physical appearances. Everyone should be able to feel this way, yes. When you smile like that, you feel like an 11. Her smile isn't easy to obtain though, many years of learning about yourself and the world alike. People don't need others for themselves to feel like 11, unfortunately some of us do. Fortunately that is not permanent and always changeable, with a good song such as this. PRETTY GIRL ROCK
Im not gonna lie. When I was younger I used to hate this song cos I thought it was big headed and conceited. But now I've grown up and received alot of hatred/jealousy and toxic people because of the way I look. I take pride in my appearance and behaviour and because of that I exude beauty. And sometimes I feel down cos of all the dirty looks I get (especially as a Black woman- they HATE to see it). Now I get what Keri is singing about. Shes telling us to own our beauty and forget about the haters. Look at the line of beauty icons us Black women can be inspired from that owned it eg. TLC, Janet, Josephine Baker that the video showcases. I have new found respect for this song and its my new anthem for when Im walking down the street and I get dirty looks. "Dont hate me cos I'm beautiful!" Love dont hate!!
P They really do hate to see us black women shining and being beautiful! Even your own family and friends will try to bring you down. That’s okay tho, all you gotta do is separate yourself and keep shining girl! 💕
It is tho lol whoever produced/ arranged was amazing... if it didn’t have the bop in the back this song woulda been something else. But these 2010s songs were it!
Maja Peterlin Maja It really does. I was facing some serious insecurities earlier this year due to acne. I cured myself naturally, but through the entire process this has been my anthem.
I absolutely love this song and the video. It pays respect to wonderful women in the history of music, it has a great message and it ends with Keri just being herself in a simple white tee and jeans. No crazy outfit, no nudity or gyrating on some random object. Its beautiful from start to finish. I wish music like this was still made.
This video was the reason why she was blackballed. The music industry functions like the mafia or any competitive industry. The threat was too great. This video showcased her incredible talent and magic power. To this day watching this video gives me goosebumps cuz it's that good and does the job of emotionally resonating with folks. No matter how things went down...she still was able to create a legacy with her magic. And that in itself is greatness... I'll always rock to this.🙂
Ima 80s Baby and never saw this before today. OMG!!! I’m overwhelmed and teary eyed, this is such a beautiful tribute! Keri, come back!!! You’re a freaking genius!
This song shows all the successful black artist there are,and how us black women are beautiful in our own unique way.we are not to bring each other down but to lift each other up and increase the beauty that we already have💙😍😘
I just realized that watching it again. When I first saw the video as a kid I just thought it was catchy now looking back I just noticed she portrayed Josephine Baker in the1st shot.
13 years later & this is still the best music video to exist. I remember when it first came out, I was 18 & was so hyped & intrigued. We used to watch it on repeat. Miss those times where they actually cared how a music video should look.
I love how Keri paid tribute to some of the great black female entertainers throughout history. Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Diana Ross both in the 60s girl group and Diana in the 70s, Janet Jackson and TLC.
Anthony hopperpup Shut up and stop trying to take recognition from Black people. The video itself has nothing to do with being Black but Keri represented beautiful Black women.
@@stanbily9416 Fool, I am the one who said the video has nothing to do with who black or white. What is your problem. Are you crazy ? You are responding to the wrong person, apologize immediately.

Alright!!

You"re Beautiful
I just dont understand an African American being bullied in U.S.. isn't U.S. a United States of complexion? Aren't people there exposed to all complexion. Is so sad to hear this though.
Amen sister
AshuGotchu & Music black is beautiful and so are you
Roxyl LC Fox As an American I can tell you first hand, although there are many shades of complexions, darker skin tones are not the beauty standard here in the US.

Tatyana Liraine thats right, make yourself more of a target
lydia daniels I know females are like that, but why not break that cycle instead of feeding into it???

Yeahhh!
And that's what the record's all about."
Such a simple concept yet everyone wants to interpret it into something bad.
Finally someone that understands

@@minach7482 Why
@@minach7482 why?
She got blacklisted... Thats what happened
@@basicessence1432 beyonce was chosen on a song that she wasn't and beyonce took her verse and Keri got mad
Every girl who grew up listening to this, is definitely a pretty girl now ♥️ this feels so crazy to listen to know and confidently sing the lyrics. I think that’s what Keri wanted young girls to feel like when listening to this obvi.
20s-30s: Josephine Baker
40s-50s: Dorothy Dandridge
60s: Diana Ross
70s: Donna Summer
80s: Janet Jackson
90s: T-Boz
Noura I'm wondering who she's trying to be between Dorothy and Diana
Seems to be The Andrews Sisters. But they seem out of place lol isn't this a tribute to black female singers?
Noura That's what I was confused on as well
2000s:Beyoncé 😭
Noura tlc
I wish all women felt this way. We all deserve to feel good about being who we are...even if we're not all 10's.
Alana Weaver I think many of the world's problems are caused because not enough healthy attention is administered at the correct times.
@jean bean How humble
LA Turley yes
My phone went on 10 %
Im not gonna lie.
Yes! This comment right here says it all.
It is tho lol whoever produced/ arranged was amazing... if it didn’t have the bop in the back this song woulda been something else. But these 2010s songs were it!
@Levi Brennan what's the matter if a beautiful woman knows she's beautiful and owns it??
Castle Bravo
do you hate to see em shining hun?

This song has healing powers
Maja Peterlin yes
Amen
Maja Peterlin Maja It really does. I was facing some serious insecurities earlier this year due to acne. I cured myself naturally, but through the entire process this has been my anthem.
I remember when this song came out SO MANY GUYS WERE SO MAD ABOUT IT. all because she was calling herself pretty.
This song was WAYYYY ahead of its time. Imagine all the tiktoks if this song was released in 2023!
This song is still boosting my confidence at 21 years old in 2019 😂
I’m glad it is hun
omg same haha, gonna listen to it to my way to uni and strut with confidence
Facts 😂
Factssssssss
I feel you
I absolutely love this song and the video. It pays respect to wonderful women in the history of music, it has a great message and it ends with Keri just being herself in a simple white tee and jeans. No crazy outfit, no nudity or gyrating on some random object. Its beautiful from start to finish. I wish music like this was still made.
yep I wish everything these days contain nudity and violence and more trash seriously I hate music nowadays
+Cristina Martis ikr

Thx we luv u ti
This video was the reason why she was blackballed. The music industry functions like the mafia or any competitive industry. The threat was too great. This video showcased her incredible talent and magic power. To this day watching this video gives me goosebumps cuz it's that good and does the job of emotionally resonating with folks. No matter how things went down...she still was able to create a legacy with her magic. And that in itself is greatness... I'll always rock to this.🙂
FACTS
Ok!!!!!
She wasn't Black Balled the reason she faded away is because she was inconsistent havent heard a single song after pretty girl rock

This song shows all the successful black artist there are,and how us black women are beautiful in our own unique way.we are not to bring each other down but to lift each other up and increase the beauty that we already have💙😍😘

DKAY Litt that i agree👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍😍
I just realized that watching it again. When I first saw the video as a kid I just thought it was catchy now looking back I just noticed she portrayed Josephine Baker in the1st shot.
can't believe I didn't notice that b4 I mean come on TLC and Janet Jackson was sooo obvious!!!
I'm a guy, but I gotta say... when this song plays, I'm the prettiest boy in the room.

That TLC reference hit me right in the feels.
We need more songs like this in the 2020's. We need Keri Hilson!
On Gawd Keri come back with a Bop for the females 💚💫

I enjoy her acting, but I sholllllle miss her singing!!
*“Jealousy’s the ugliest trait (Don’t ever do it).”*
13 years later & this is still the best music video to exist. I remember when it first came out, I was 18 & was so hyped & intrigued. We used to watch it on repeat. Miss those times where they actually cared how a music video should look.
3:25 she is 😍 beautiful
That is my favorite part of the video, where she is herself ❤❤
The national anthem for being confident and loving yourself. 😊
I love how Keri paid tribute to some of the great black female entertainers throughout history. Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Diana Ross both in the 60s girl group and Diana in the 70s, Janet Jackson and TLC.
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO ABOUT WHO IS BLACK OR WHITE !
Anthony hopperpup if it ain’t had nun to do wit black or white why was all the people she played in the video black ?
@@saudigz Also, when some one is mixed, to me they are not black. Obama is half black and half white, so live with that ! Do not tell me or, you are considered black if mixed and all that bull shit. Half white and half black is neither black or white !
