She is such an incredible vocalist, definitely one of the best I've ever heard. PLEASE let me know more I should watch from her because I love listening to her sing!
• Very perceptive. You're the first reactor to highlight the eye glitter. A few have confused it with crying, which wrecks any singer's ability to produce the proper notes. [Sohyang said she cried a lot during practice.]
• We know you can spend an hour to analyze each and every amazing thing Sohyang did in this song, after picking up your jaw off your lap. Secretly, we want to see how you handle the moment she entered vocal beast mode with her initial belt. Most reactors stop analyzing seconds after she goes full gospel; it's hard not to be overwhelmed by all the vocal techniques and conveyed emotions. The audio (arrangement, choir, musicians, mixing) and visuals (dress, staging, lighting, church background, camerawork) are stunning. Production values are off the charts.
• Since you love soft, pure vocals, consider reviewing "Misty" or "Flashlight" of the Begin Again Korea busking series; they have minimal instruments and focus on the voices. See links and info in my comment in your first (IWALY) reaction.
• Please resist all calls to next review "여러분 (Everyone)", 7 minutes of insane dynamics filled with belts, riffs, runs, ... It's like getting a person who only tried jalapeño peppers to go for Carolina Reapers as the next level up. That's just bonkers. Review a dozen other Sohyang performances before doing this one.
• In "홀로 아리랑 (Arirang Alone)", Sohyang sings even purer bell-like notes with perfect onsets and resonance that remind me of running a wet finger around the rims of crystal water glasses having different fill levels. The Korean folksong begins with a Disney-style start, and Sohyang presents a dramatic story with her voice. I felt every emotion, even when English language translation is ignored. To prepare, read the translated lyrics, bring tissues, don't wear eye makeup.
• There's a rare chance for you to see her perform live in the US. Act quickly!

Great reaction to this incredible performer. You keep calling her a girl but she was 37 when this was recorded. She is a professional gospel singer and one of the greatest vocalists on the planet. So Hyang is so incredible. I never get tired of her version of this song. You might really like her cover of the 'Misty' (jazz standard) from the Begin Again Concerts where it is just her voice and a keyboard, or her duet of 'Flashlight' with Lee Suhyun (it is really a beautiful cover). Both are more voice than instrumental. Also her latest song, an acoustic version of her own song 'Higher', is absolutely top notch and shows off her amazing vocal flexibility without really any major belting. Listening and watching that performance you would not think she could possibly be 45 years old, but she is! Great reaction to the master of voice, So Hyang. You are right, she can sing anything.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 45 on April 5, 2023, though in Korean culture she would be 46 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone,” their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing," her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether Sohyang likes it or not, fame has found her, run her over and then backed up and run over her again!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean stage production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" 'about one hundred times' when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is maybe 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
This was the first song I heard her sing over 6 years ago. I have not missed many days since then listening to her. I think the more you listen to her, the more you realize that she is the best singer on the planet. Myself and her many fans love her and treasure her. She is a very special woman!!!

Is it her gospel training and personal commitment to touching people that make her so relatable. Her ability to engage her audience is unparalleled.
Andrea, Sohyang is appearing at the Pechanga Resort between LA and San Diego on October 28 for a concert, her first in North America in five years. So if you have the money and live remotely close, there is your opportunity to see her in a couple of days.
I first stumbled over this very video of Sohyang when I was 61, four years ago, and I was in actual tears. She literally reduced me to tears and not just once but for about the first ten or twenty times I watched this. I have never seen nor heard Sohyang's equal in all my life and I'm now 65. As so many reactors have stated, there are no words to describe what an emotional onslaught Sohyang lays on you when she just lets it fly, what with her perfect technique and unbelievable communicative power.
I just watched an interview with Sohyang that she gave a week ago and the interviewer asked her what vocal training she has had. Sohyang replied that she has never had any training, only five sessions with Seth Riggs many years ago (2009 or so). She simply imitated the singers she enjoyed, namely Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton and a few others. So we are looking at a space alien in our midst here. She is so far above every other singer I have ever heard that I don't even know where to place her. Thanks for the before/after link. I have searched for it, from time to time, unsuccessfully. This time I downloaded it! This is the performance that made me a huge fan of So Hyang. Her Aug 27, 2022 performance of Upon This Rock has, by the smallest of measure, topped this one but I haven't found ANY of her performances that are not better than 99.9% of any other.

Finally, you finally got to know Sohyang. congratulations. Sohyang, a Korean treasure praised by the best singers on the planet. She is the god of song. Most singers and vocal coaches begin their reactions to Sohyang's songs by trying to interpret them technically, but they always end with emotion

I suggest any of her performances from the ‘begin again Korea’ series which she did during covid in various venue’s, as with ‘I always love you’ but for something again stripped back, but tackling yet another genre, her performance of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’.
Tbh,it’s irrelevant what you listen to nxt because she only does ‘amazing’ & if you continue on your Sohyang journey,you’d better get used to feeling like you do right now.
I suppose people will argue that her technical prowess can be matched by others but for me, the reason she shines like the brightest star is her ability to emote & tell a story with her voice & take you on a real rollercoaster ride. She can connect with her audience like no other & when someone such as yourself, a singer, musician, songwriter, performer, who must listen to tonnes of music when not singing yourself, is basically floored & more or less speechless by this amazing woman, who is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside it drives it home to those of us who aren’t talented musically, who don’t understand the technicalities & only know that she sounds good to our ears & make us have goosebumps & feel good inside, just how good she really is.
She is not only an amazing singer but is a very talented musician in general & is responsible for arrangement of all her performances. She is also a university lecturer by day & a published author of fiction.
I am sure you’ve had many people recommending you check out her back story & why she isn’t the worldwide diva her voice surely merits.
When you hear her turn on the power you can be forgiven for wondering where all that power comes from because she is so petite.
When people tell you she can sing anything I believe it is true because although i haven’t heard her sing anything country ( I am 100% sure she could if she wanted) I think I have just about heard most other genre’s, rock,pop, blues/jazz, obv the big power ballads, & although not full on opera, I have heard her sing songs with elements of opera & here’s the boggy, this angel on earth can RAP, but her heart will always be on gospel music & you will often hear elements of gospel in her arrangements of songs that are not usually associated with the genre in its original form.
Finally, please don’t be put off by recommendations for songs that are in Korean because trust me, I don’t know how she does it, but she had the ability to make you ‘feel’ when you don’t understand a word she singing & as I have found out for myself, even when subtitles are provided, she is so captivating on stage that I found myself not even looking at the subtitles anyway, how does that happen? It’s magic or something!!!
Oh & if you find the Sohyang haters out there, because they are there, especially fans of another female singer appearing in the comments trying to convince you that she can’t sing etc please put them straight because the non musicsl people, like myself, that try to defend Sohyang haven’t got much to back up our thoughts with whereas people like yourself, singers, musicians, vocal coaches etc who know their stuff when it comes to music have the knowledge to back up their opinions that cant be denied by anybody. Obviously there is personal choice, which is fine & if you don’t like the way she sings or what she sings then fair enough, just say that but don’t try convincing the world that she can’t sing, she just screams & that she is emotionless on stage etc.
Any I think you should get plenty of rest before your next Sohyang experience because you’re gonna need it😂😂😂😂😂

I’d like to recommend you to check a crossover group from South Korea I discovered recently. Its name is “Forténa” that has four tenors combination.(the first crossover group with four tenors).
One of the members is a very famous count tenor(His name is DQ Lee and played in lots of operas all over the world).
When I heard their very much first cover song “Neapolis” in a competition program, I had a goosebumps everywhere.
